That said, saying, it can only get better from where it was last year, sets the bar low. I expect much improvement. Mostly from having more options, having more seasoning for the younger guys, and adding guys with a track record of some pretty solid seasons. In 2013 and beyond, pitching will carry us.

I wouldn’t be completely against giving Jose Valverde a minor league invite to see if he can regain his 2010-11 form. Wort case scenario, we just cut him if he doesn’t regain his command. He obviously has something to prove and if after last year we had the ability to get Valverde at all, I would have been pretty happy and to get him on a minor league deal, I’m all for it.

He also said he wants BP candidates that can go more than 1 inning – something he tried repeatedly with little success last season. Since this BP is practically completely turned over, maybe he’ll have more luck with that. Then again, here’s hoping our pitchers routinely get into the 7th so we don’t need many BP arms to go multiple innings.
