Mets Sign Two Outfielders To Minor League Deals

According to Matt Eddy of Baseball America, the Mets have signed outfielders Corey Patterson and Mike Wilson to Minor League contracts.

Patterson, 33, last played in the majors in 2011 where he hit .157 with three RBI in 57 plate appearances with the Cardinals. Last season, he batted .251/.285/.410 in 387 plate appearances for Triple-A Nashville in the Brewers system.

Wilson, 29, also hasn’t played in the majors since 2011 when he was with the Mariners and batted .148 in eight games. Last season he batted .239/.343/.452 in 268 plate appearances with Triple-A Tacoma in the Mariners system.

  • So, we sit and prepare for the onslaught of A) Sandy sucks, these guys are losers and the B) nothing to see here, minor league filler.

    I lean towards B.

  • Acc. to Rubin, they’re not major league considerations and will head to just minor league camp for AAA Las Vegas.

  • The outfielders are going to start their own team soon

    • there are enough RPs to form the other team to play them.

  • I played RF in little league in 1976. Where can I sign up?

  • Isnt that mookie wilson son?

    • No, you’re thinking of Preston Wilson

  • Thum thum thum – This your consolation prize for not signing Michael Bourn. News at 10.

  • Their minor league numbers don’t even look good.

    • Because Alderson is purposely tanking it for the sake of getting higher draft picks. I’ll be SHOCKED if they sign Bourne.

  • Should we not have enough prospects to fill up our roster at triple-A or is it common for teams to sign these type of players (seemingly not qualified to be major leaguers) when there are not yet enough prospects deemed ready for further promotion and “fill-ins” are necessary for the time being?

Otherwise, is it a way of psychologically conditioning our young players on what type of quality they should expect if called up to the “big” club? :)

    • Lol, both. Teams do this and we have to more because someone forgot to draft quality OF’s.

  • Man… if anybody wanted bourne here this should seal your faith on acquiring him. say what you will but the man is consistant. even if it is at the expense of mets fans, but the man is a consitant loser. SMH.. #1 pick in 2014 here we come. and at this point, might as well do it, it’s not even fun to be in the top part of the sucky bunch, just suck big in order to get a higher pick.

    • Minor league depth only. No invite to ST.

If either one of these guys sees an inning at the ML level this season, that can only mean we had worse injury luck than in 2009.

    • SRT, and your point is what? Didn’t we see fred lewis with the ball club towards the end? this man is trying the hardest to find lightining in a bottle and fail miserably at it, that’s one of the reason why not only the players quit on the team, but now fans will not be showing up. noone is buying his bullshit excuses anymore, 3 years is enough for a GM to prove the direction of the team, till this day he’s got people scratching their head as to what is he doing.. he worsten the bullpen, the roster, the SP then tells the fans to put all their faith into kids who most likely won’t pan out? Yeah, good luck on that…

      • I thought my point was pretty self explanatory.
I don’t see either of these signings as contributors to the ML club – unless there are a boatload of injuries this season. I didn’t see either as trying to get lighting in a bottle for the ML club.

And despite many of the conspiracy type theories that have been commented on here, I don’t see this as any ‘deliberate’ move to make sure the team tanks so they can get a higher pick next season.

Not sure what you mean by ‘then tells the fans to put all their faith into kids who most likely won’t pan out? ‘
Are you talking about kids like Ike, Tejada, Harvey, Kirk – or are you talking about the prospects such as Wheeler, TAD, Familia, and the like?

If this is a reference about not spending money on qualified FAs (including Reyes), well you know my opinion on that the past couple of years. It’s from the book of ‘How to Field a ML Team while Slashing Payroll 50 MIL and Saving the Team for the Owners’.

      • The only people scratching their heads about what Alderson is doing are those who can’t understand such complex ideas like extracting as much value out of inherited players as possible to build a deep farm system all while being forced to cut salary by 50 million dollars. It’s not really rocket science.

Of course this has nothing to do with the signing of two players to be minor league filler.
