Jenrry Mejia Put Under Age/Identity Review

Jenrry MejiaSandy Alderson spoke to reporters this morning and stated that the reason behind Jenrry Mejia’s troubles obtaining a visa from the Dominican Republic is due to a review of his age and identity. Alderson went on to say that the 23-year old is the recipient of a random identity check and not being specifically suspected for fraud or wrongdoing.

Mejia, who is a candidate to be the Mets swingman, is currently training at the Mets’ complex in the Dominican Republic.

I really want to know…

  • For crying out loud….

Considering all paperwork should be in order, I wonder just how long this takes?

    • Alderson says it is just a random spot check. Customs officials can be kind of screwy,

      • You either have a valid passport or you don’t. Spot checks don’t take days to reconcile. I believe you don’t get to custom officials until you arrive in the USA. He’s still in his own country. So who actually requested this “spot check?”

        • I believe more than a passport is required to stay and work in the US for 6+ months, when you’re not a US citizen. You need a valid work Visa – and MLB might have a process for that.

        • And how does one determine a valid passport?

In case you didn’t know, there have been some issues with foreign born players and their identities.

          • Yes I do know that. The passport means you are identified. The visa is issued by US authorities for verification of work place and length of time. Now, if the visa was not given to him then he is not approved to work in the USA. If he’s trying to get one for this year, they would go off of his prior identification. Maybe new evidence was presented to call into question the validity of his identity. I just don’e believe that situation would suddenly arise just before he is to travel to the US. Folks, I wish to disclose that this is all my opinion only. I am not an attorney or an expert in these matters. Nor do I wish to argue with anyone.

            • You make like this is the first time this happened. Every year there are a few players who arrive late because of Visa problems. Plus, with the problems with some of the players from down there in the last few years, perhaps they are taking a closer look. Usually it is resolved within a few days.

  • Turns out Mejia is El Duque’s older brother! Who knew…

  • Random identity check? All they need to do to see he is who he says is to go to MLB.com type his name and see video that they guy pitching named Mejia is the same guy sitting in their office and let him be on his way.

    • The guys formerly known as Fausto Carmona and Leo Nunez tried that. It didn’t work.

      • Touche :-)

        • Let’s keep in mind that prior to taking the Mets GM job, Alderson was hired by MLB to clean up the issues in DR, including the identity fraud issue. I would hope after taking over at Mets GM that he did his homework on his own guys since he’s the one that put in place the system that picked Mejia for random screening in the first place.

          • “…after taking over as Mets GM…”

Basically, if someone knows what’s going on down there, it’s Alderson.

  • Off Topic: A bunch of interesting Fred Wilpon quotes being tweeted.

    • Mike Puma ‏@NYPost_Mets

Fred Wilpon in camp, painting a rosy outlook. Says he is happy with Sandy Alderson as the day he hired him.

      Mike Puma ‏@NYPost_Mets

Fred Wilpon looking for team to break even this year financially. But says that can only happen with a competitive team on the field.

      Andy Martino ‏@MartinoNYDN

Wilpon offered strong endorsements of Collins, Alderson — but said likely no contract talks about Collins until after season.

      • To Recap:

Fred once again telling us the sun is coming out tomorrow.
Breaking even financially this season tells me they definitely were not breaking even the past few years – despite what some would have us believe.

        • but of course you would NEVER paste any tweets critical of Alderson. Very selective of you but that’s to be expected.

          • No good can come from me conversing with you.

            Moving on….

          • but of course you would NEVER paste any tweets critical of Alderson. Very selective of you but that’s to be expected.”

And she NEVER will…. She’s like the treasurer of the We Love Sandy no matter what fan club..

            • Sigh……

              • well, considering Fred did not say anything critical of his GM, there were no nastygram tweets to post.

and frankly, if Fred is supporting the guy, then that pretty much says they are on board with whatever secret organizational plan they are working from.

                • ‘well, considering Fred did not say anything critical of his GM, there were no nastygram tweets to post.’

                  This.
I guess I was suppose to find one or make one up for the Coeur crowd here.
Although, don’t know what they expected since it was Fred talking about his team and FO. Not like he was going to bad mouth them to the media.

      • KBurkhardtSNY: To sum up Fred Wilpon: they are free of debt, can improve payroll but will only if it is “appropriate.” He called David Wright “our Jeter.”

It better be appropriate going into 2014.

        • Can’t he be our Cal Ripkin?

        • He called David Wright “our Jeter.”

Wow… WHat a disrespectful comment by fred. Well, looking at it he may be right. minus the championships, the accolades and clutch gene, DW is the Jeter of the mets… Ugh…

  • I give myself a random age and identity check every morning when I wake up … just to make sure.

    • Comment of the day.

  • Good taste in music, Clayton

    • Thanks Bayonne. I thought it was appropriate considering Mejia’s identity crisis. Haha

  • DW has always been our Jeter…minus the consistent play, clutch play, and being surrounded by HOF hitters at all times

    lmao
