The Mets have always been more Shakespeare than Happy Days. If we wanted a sure thing, the best team that money would buy, we'd be Yankees fans.

We're not. We want drama. . .we want to root for the underdog. . .for the player that makes it on grit and hustle, that doesn't quit long after other players their age have retired and ends up with a Cy Young award. That's what the Mets are made of, always have been and always will be.

Things are never easy for the Mets and that's the way life is.

And you know, they are going to be winners again, if not this year, well then next year.

Good article Adam.

I became a fan in 1969, just having moved back to NY, Brooklyn, Williamsburg section, from having spent my middle school years, 6th, 7th and 8th, living in Puerto Rico trying to sharpen my language skills but upon arriving in NY was immediately fascinated by a team of great pitching, defense, BP and platoon players just about everywhere and lest I forget the glue that held the team together, Gil Hodges.

Having played baseball growing up on dirt fields, grass and surrounded by many trees, but if you could get an infield with adequate OF you got 9-15 kids and you played.

My 1st fav was Cleon Jones and Tom Seaver, watching as he battled for the batting title and then lose it towards the end was heart break was more than made up for by Tom Terrific and his dirty knee that touched the mound as he drove toward homeplate along with CY and WS.

I was a big fan of Famous Amos but he was gone, replaced by a "lighter" version of Ed Charles but Fregosi was past his prime, anyway watching Mets players come up like Singleton who left but also seeing Jon Matlack develop, and John "Hammer" Milner, who I tried to imitate from the LH side was another fav but later Doc and Straw, whom I requested autographed pics from while living in Ohio then getting them was like Christmas to me, though my wife thought I was a big baby but my love for Mets was seen and extended to my kids and staying up late at night in Ohio waiting to catch highlights of their games was worth not getting any sleep.
While working swing shift, 3-11pm, I would catch the radio broadcasts from St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia on my transistor radio was awesome.

Later Alfonso, Olerud, Cone, Piazza along with Ordonez helped me make it through a competitive 90's but it wasn't until Wright and Reyes came up that I had 2 whom I could cheer for and they happen to be playing side by side.

David along with Cap Kirk and the young pitching nucleus, Gee, Harvey, Niese, Wheeler are the ones that I give my special "emotional" attachment too as RA is gone and how could he not be at the top of any Met fans "fav" list.

It has been a struggle but I still purchase the MLB pckg even when my little bro in NY tells me that they aren't any good, he will catch games when he can; I'm sold on NY Mets.
I watch the games into Sep/Oct even when eliminated cause that also provides a glimpse into future player but also knowing that my Mets will not take the field again until Feb makes watching those last few in a bad season worthwhile.

I count the days till Feb 13 and opening day and relish going to see ST games no matter who is on the "traveling" squad that comes up to Viera, Kissimmee, Port St. Lucie, etc cause this this is my chance to see the future of Mets and I might find a future "fav" to start latching on too.

I now talk Mets as well as "drag" my grand kids with me to ST games so that love of a Met fan might spark itself in them to continue the "love" affair as well as how to latch onto a favorite player for themselves!

PS Jose Reyes was a fav for them also as their last name is also Reyes so all those Reyes shirt and jerseys that my family sent me down, on sale from Modells, after his leaving can still be used since their name IS on the back and their favorite team is on the front :)

You Gotta Beleive or as Johan said after his no-no 'Beleive It', is the type of Mets team i love to rally around, 2013 team has some of those qualities. Sandys in a 6/7th inning stage of breaking down and rebuilding them and left us 1 OF short of giving us a better chance(which i think he left open thinking he'd have better chance to address it midseason) but there's so many likeable Mets that could step up and have good years, coupled w a starting staff whio i think can all outperform and crafty bullepen w/our stud 2 minor leaguers in the wings..it feels like Miracle Met type season could happen, probably more 85 mets then 86 Mets but if we have a good first half and become buyers, it could get interesting.

I actually thnk we can take the Braves, they can have the Uptowns and see how that goes for them. Nats are tuff but need to overcome a collasal choke in playoffs ...

Hi Adam,

As mentioned in another post, it is tragic that there are less and less people sharing our love of the orange and blue today as there was in the past.

http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/yankees/findings_more_facebook_like_yankees_9uZjYCo6gJzk8GzaJhakeJ

Why? I don't believe it is because we have been losing on the field - for better or for worse that has been part of our legacy.

Instead, I think Joe McGinniss should write another book “The Selling Of The General Manager 2010″ which will explain why so many might be turned off to the team. What we have now as a general manager is a business person looking at the ledger book and not a baseball person with a vision of long term success based primarily on re-building a club through the minor leagues. He proved his vision when admitting to Mike Francesa last September about those inexpensive players he got and knowing they would only be able to produce 50% and one cannot expect to win with them.

This is not the Met organization most of us grew up with. This is now a business and only looked at as a business. Oh, I know the Wilpons want to win and have shown they would spend as much as necessary to try and bring home a winner. But they also showed the dark side of themselves when Citi Field was unveiled with it’s too expensive seats, blocked view of left field for those in the “cheap seats” and catering to those with the money.

The Mets, of course, have always been a business but for so many decades did not lose focus or respect of the middle class working family (that’s why with the Mets and I, it was love at first sight – my father owned a delivery truck and drove a cab at night to make ends meet). And being a big corporation today does not have to create any problem as far as a disconnect is concerned. The Mets could be a big business making tremendous profits yet still be run with a heart - not as extreme as Bill Gates or Warren Buffet - but not as cold as it is now.

I don't hold Sandy accountable for this, personally. He was hired to do a certain job and that is what he is doing. What I do hold him accountable for is his own double-talk which has been insulting to many of us and I'm sure part of the reason for that drop in fan support as featured in the Post article. Of course, the New York Post is best used for wrapping fishes in, but nevertheless, the point is clear.

Hi Adam,

As mentioned in another post, it is tragic that there are less and less people sharing our love of the orange and blue today as there was in the past.

http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/yankees/findings_more_facebook_like_yankees_9uZjYCo6gJzk8GzaJhakeJ

Why? I don’t believe it is because we have been losing on the field – for better or for worse that has been part of our legacy.

Adam, great post! I had to laugh when I read about your grandfather brainwashing you, because I have not only done it with my own kids, I've brained washed my nieces and nephews as well.
The bigger point I get from your post, and a few others about being a Mets is not about the wins and loses, it's about cherished memories of spending quality time with family and friends. That's is what it's all about!!
