Collins Wants To Officially Name Wright Captain

Terry Collins told reporters today, that he intends to go to Jeff Wilpon and Sandy Alderson to discuss naming David Wright the official captain of the Mets.
“I’ve never had to do that before, so I’m not really sure what the process is,” the manager said. “I have an idea in my head of how to approach it as we move forward, and I’ll start that process. But it’s something I need to discuss with Jeff and Sandy first.”

Original Post 2/13
It’s been eight years since the last time a Met donned a “C” on his uniform. Met Hall of Famer John Franco was the last player to serve as a Mets captain; his reign lasting from 2001-2004.
In what seems to have become almost a quarterly issue for the last 3-4 years, the subject of naming David Wright the team’s captain came up once again, this time it reared it’s head during manager Terry Collin’s state of the Mets address yesterday Port St. Lucie.
Interestingly enough, Collins sounded like the whole matter was overblown and tried to make light of it. ”He knows he’s the guy,” Collins said. “He knows he’s the man here. This is his team. He’s the face of it. He’s the captain.”
And then, with a twinkle in his eye, Collins said, “Does he need a ‘C’ on his jersey? Well No. 2 doesn’t have a ‘C’ on his jersey.”
I love this guy… Of course he was referring to Derek Jeter, but more importantly Collins seems to share the same disdain for that damned “C” as I do. I thought it looked ridiculous on Franco, and I thought it looked even worse on Gary carter and Keith Hernandez.
You want to ceremoniously name David Wright captain? Go ahead and do it, it makes no difference to me. But please, for God’s sake, no “C” on the uniform. I think it’s so cheesy ( I hate using that word) and it ruins the look of what I think are the best uniforms in baseball.
“Are we going to have a press conference to make David Wright the captain?, said Collins. “I don’t see one coming, but that’s not saying it’s not going to happen.”

O Captain. My Captain

Yeah, that should be the topic. a “C” on the jersey of a player of a losing team for 4 straight years with a likely chance to lose 90+ games this year… SMH.
If it helps, the O Captain My Captain poem is about a dead captain.
President Abraham Lincoln
The would stand for CHOKE though
THIS^^^^^^^^^^
The “C” would stand for CHOKE though
and THAT *******
Blame whoever asked Terry that at the press conference on SNY yesterday. Terry was just responding to the question.
For the record, I see no need for the C on the uniform either. Terry’s right, he knows it’s his team now.
ALEX? CHANCE TO LOSE 90+?
I STRONGLY RECOMMEND U CHANGE YOUR MEDICATION!
ON THIS TOPIC, MAY I REMIND EVERYONE THAT HISTORICALLY & TRADITIONALLY THE YANKS & METS ARE POLAR OPOSITES IN MANY WAYS, THE LEAST OF WHICH IS THE NECESSITY FOR NAMING A SINGLE PLAYER AS “THE CAPTAIN” SINCE IN 50+ YRS THE METSIES HAVE ONLY SO KNIGHTED 2 VOLUNTARILY, KEITH & FRANCO AS ‘KID’ WHINED TOO MUCH ABOUT KEITH’S HONOR TO JUSTIFY A “CO” CAPTAINCY AS I MORE LETTER C WAS CHEAP ENOUGH TO QUIET THE JEALOUS WHINE. WHILE FRANCO LIKELY EARNED HIS AS A MEMBER OF THE JEFFY “SUNDAY BBQ BRUNCH BUNCH”
Mets62, nice talking to you, hope you are good my friend. it is my belief this team, the way it’s put together have a chance to lose 90+ games, my medication is fine
Baseball Prospectus has released it’s PECOTA projections for 2013.
You have to subscribe to see them but AA has them up. This is what they’ve got for the NL East:
Team W L
Washington Nationals 88 74
Atlanta Braves 82 80
New York Mets 80 82
Philadelphia Phillies 80 82
Miami Marlins 66 96
***************************************************
Better than my early predicted 77 Wins.
Didn’t they predict 75 wins last year for the mets? this is interesting. of course, they pegged the red sox to win 90+ and the angels to win it all…so……
I really don’t remember what their prediction was for last season.
I like how Alex has been stalked by 2 different fake monikers most likely by a regular here and Joe D simply leaves their comments up
I dont leave their comments up and have deleted and banned 7 instances in last 3 days.

Bayonne, i paid no mind. I laugh about it and move on. It’s kinda good to have fans out there.
Since you are famous, can I get you autograph?
Oh Joe D my friend, you are sadistic!!! hahahahahahaha
Keep up the great work Joe D.
David Wright: Captain lost at “C” ?
I dont really see what the big deal is C or no C. Players who have done less than Wright have been Mets captains, so…
Players who have done less than Wright have been Mets captains, so…”
Well, check again. those players were winners.. and were WS champions. Wright on the other hand……………………………………….
Just check Alex68. Those teams also didn’t have Jose Reyes on them. When Reyes can be replaced by a very mediocre shortstop who has limited range, power and speed, just what did Jose really bring to the team? Fun? Yes. A winner? No.
well Reyes was replaced..i wouldnt say SS was improved upon…
esp considering Tejada missed a good chunk of time with a hamstring injury….
John Franco didn’t win a WS here
It’s not a big deal. A letter on a jersey doesn’t magically make someone a ‘leader’. Anyone who’s watched Wright could see that he was that type even before he first came up.
Bullseye. Good piece. I think the C looks awful.
I think C’s on jerseys should be reserved for hockey players. If the players on the team and the manager say he’s the captain then he is the captain. We don’t get to decide whether he is or is not… they do. And I trust their judgment of how Wright handles himself over somebody’s potentially skewed view of a player on their favorite team whom they despise
Who gets to wear the “A” like in hockey? Is that for Davis? LOL
“He knows he’s the man here. This is his team. He’s the face of it. He’s the captain.”
This
I just hope Ike busts out for good this season and takes over as the REAL face of the franchise. If Ike busts out and it looks like he’s arrived he’s going to take over that clubhouse and be the go to guy. And I predicted Ike to be a leader type character (if he can produce in the majors) also back around 3 years ago. It’s better for the team to reflect Ike’s personality than a wimp like David Wright who is NO leader in any respect whatsoever I don’t care how many team mates say the “right thing” in public last year. The only reason Wright was even considered in any capacity like that was because he’s the last man standing from the 06-08 teams.
And that is THE ONLY REASON.
Yep that wimpy David Wright – played with a fractured back, fractured finger, other injuries over the years. What a WIMP!!!
A teammates/coaches have been saying great things about Wright for years – long before last year
I always have to clarify this. He’s wimpy and weak as a competitor. The only good thing about Wright is that he’s pretty durable. As for his competitiveness? It’s weak. He blinks first, he chokes, and when given the opportunity to be the man for real he came up short. He’s a LOUSY competitor and probably never has even slid hard into 2B his entire career and if he did he probably apologized to the guy and slapped on his behind.
I HATE this guy’s game regardless of his stats.
Captains are pretty pointless is baseball – the title doesn’t actually mean anything. I don’t really care either way on this – if you are going to name a captain, I think DW is a guy who would deserve the honor, so I wouldn’t be mad about them doing so…but since its a pretty meaningless thing, I really don’t care if the Mets never name another captain ever again. I agree with the OP though – please no giant C..haha
Good leadership is essential to any unit and not only just in baseball, either so you don’t know what you’re talking about. Good leadership/motivation and a lot of important human element sometimes helps to ignite a lot of those “statistics” you guys like to worship. It’s a human thing, something a lot of you guys have forgotten about.
I didn’t say leadership is meaningless…I just said the official captain title is. It’s a honorary thing, nothing more really – in baseball there is no official duty that comes along with being named a captain. You can be a leader without being a captain (as Collins said). I think currently only 2 of 30 teams have a “captain”.
Agreed, “Captain” does not a leader make.
i guess semantics is the way of the day so far with a few people using it to wiggle out of messes.
Disgraceful.
It’s not semantics – I am not trying to “wiggle out” of any “mess”. Though that might be what YOU are trying to do here.
The article was about naming a captain and whether or not to slap a silly C on a jersey – so that’s what I commented on. I wasn’t talking about the broad implications of leadership in baseball and in life.
i wasn’t referring to you just other people in general today, sorry about that.
awesome, Wright is neither leader nor really a captain…
C – really means chairman of the board…
We’ve been over this many times, you guys want your golden boy to be the captain, who honestly have time to be fighting over who’s the captain or not of a losing franchise.. either way, unless proven otherwise, this guy is a known choker who will have some good stats, he’s no leader, just the older guy on the team.. If anything, TC is passing the losing torch to him because it seems wright is content with losing not collins…
Who the hell is you guys? Seriously. I have never at any point said I wanted Wright to be “named captain” and have a “C” put on his jersey. That don’t make a damn. Either the players look to him as a leader or they do not. These are grown men, they aren’t going to look to someone as their captain just because someone puts damn thread into cloth.
are YOU part of the group? If not then there’s no reason for you to get all riled up. with that being said i find it funny how everytime someone says something negative about sandy or wright you’re the first one defending them to no end…
I know you have issues with reply buttons but who the heck are you even talking to? Me or JMKG? Neither of us said anything about Wright being named a captain and both said that we didn’t think it was useful.
“We’ve been over this many times, you guys want your golden boy to be the captain, who honestly have time to be fighting over who’s the captain or not of a losing franchis”
Who are you guys? Considering NOT ONE SINGLE POSTER actually said they wanted him to be named captain and have a big C stitched to his uniform.
‘ Considering NOT ONE SINGLE POSTER actually said they wanted him to be named captain and have a big C stitched to his uniform.’
This. Not in this thread anyway.
Yep, at best you can say Gina is indifferent regarding it but no one in here is clamoring for it.
Captain on a jersey? Like a team can actually appoint a real captain. The players decide who the real leaders are, anything else is just marketing.
As I thought would happen, Mets fans all agreeing that C on a baseball jersey is useless and meaningless, yet the usual crowd take this opportunity to repeat, multiple times in same thread, their loathing for a guy, then go onto say “You guys want your Golden Boy to be Captain”, clearly lacking reading comprehension where everyone said the opposite. As well as make assumptions about what the actual players think and discrediting what the professionals, that are actually on the field say about the guy. I don’t care about facts, the guy sucks!!! hahahahaha
Talk about predictable…………..
So funny
I know right….at this point, its just funny the stuff he (Alex68) comes up with. I guess us Mets fans come in all types, but he sure loves talking shyt on anything about our beloved D Wright, or S.A.
Oh Christ,
A good manager who’s confident in himself should be the leader until one emerges from the roster. They don’t dictate them out of the clear blue sky and they certainly should know how leaders emerge. I’ve had enough of Collins last year.
I really do not care about the captain of a baseball team but if this happens I will consider it an early Christmas gift from the Mets because the sideshow here will be epic.
One thing I find curious, how come people who sit on their couch all day watching the Mets think they know who is more right to be named the captain? If the manager and the players are on board – why should anybody else’s view matter?
“I really do not care about the captain of a baseball team but if this happens I will consider it an early Christmas gift from the Mets because the sideshow here will be epic.”
Ya, when I read that I pictured Joe D jumping up form his desk yelling “CACHING!”
If memory serves me correctly, I recall Collins answering a question about Wright being a captain a couple of years ago by stating something to the effect that he learned from Leyland that there is only one captain of the ship and it is the manager. Therefore, no team captain is necessary.
I wonder what caused him to change his tune?
I think it would be a nice gesture to name David as team captain, however, I don’t know how wise it was for Terry to let the press know he was going to ask the front office for their permission first. It puts the front office on the spot (which I don’t care about) by going against protocol.
Please dont make me captain…
this just means I’ll have an even BIGGER bullseye on my back….
I like just blending in…
WHY DEAR LORD WHYYYYY
Only in Mets-land is a friggin “C” on a jersey a topic of discussion…especially when youre putting a terrible lineup on the field…
I guess this is Terry Collins way of trying to get a contract extension kiss David Wrights A_ _!!(butt). since he’s the only one on this team that is untouchable not to mention the only one NOT in the front office that is privy to this masterplan.
Alderson has made only 3 solid moves in his entire tenure here….getting Wheeler, the package from Toronto, and NOT re-upping that windbag Collins.
LEROY? WHAT’S YOUR PROBLEM WITH TERRY? HAVE U REALIZED YET THAT IT’S BASICLY UNLUIKELY, ACCORDING TO MLB TRADITION, FOR WALLY TO SUCCEED TERRY? BOTH COLLINS & BACKMAN APPEAR TO HAVE VERY SIMILAR CLUBHOUSE PERSONNAS, MEANING THE METS’ F.O. IS UNLIKELY TO SEAT A SIMILAR VOICE IN TERRY’S CHAIR, MORE LIKELY IOT’LL BE WILPON FAVORITE TUFFEL WITH BACKMAN PLANNED AS TUFF’SUCCESSOR
CERTAINLY A TEAM WITH LITTLE POTENTIAL FOR GRANDEUR REQUIRES A LOUD, STRIDENT VOICE TO MAINTAIN THEIR CONCENTRATION ON THE JOB @ HAND DESPITE IT’S APPARENT FUTILITY.
OF COURSE, COLLINS IS REQUIRED TO KEEP THE TONE BOTH CONFIDENT & HOPEFUL. IF U REALLY PREFER REALISTIC VIEWS U MUST HAVE LOVED JERRY.
The predictions for the 2013 season might well be very accurate. The Nationals are the class of the division and to me the Braves are going to sorely miss Chipper Jones. The Phillies just keep getting older and we should be around the .500 mark
My prediction….Unless this Jeter/Wright comparison crap stops and the David Wright haters keep their mouths shut…that one of the over zealous Met fans will go postal and have the entire bunch nuked!
You guys are nuts!
I have never seen any thing beaten to death for so long!
Why does Terry need to go to Sandy AND Jeff Wilpon about this matter? I thought Sandy Alderson ran the Mets and the owners just stayed in the background and wrote the checks. Wait a second? You don’t think……NO! Can’t be. Jeff Wilpon…..making baseball decisions about the Mets!!!!! No……That can’t be. Everyone knows that the sole person responsible for the New York Mets is Sandy Alderson, not the owners.
