19 year old Brandon Nimmo – 321 Plate Appearances, 66Hits, 20 doubles, 6HR, 40RBI, 46BB, 78K, .248avg, .372OBP, .406slg, .778 ops

If you were told blindly “look at these 2 NY Penn League offensive #’s and tell me who will make it” you would take Nimmo.

Now that doesn’t mean Nimmo will be as good (hmm) as Ike Davis, but it does give a little insight into why we do not need to flip out about NYPL stats one way or the other doesn’t it?

The people who complain about Nimmo’s NYPL stats would have canned Ike Davis in 2008. There’s no denying that.

Nimmo is still a kid and if Ike Davis could turn into a big leaguer which some believe he could be a Top 10 1B in spite of a terrible NYPL season – then drawing a conclusion on Nimmo right now is just silly.

I can tell his power by that. I know what ISO is in baseball terms and it’s even more useless than OPS. At least OPS can give you a very, very quick rough idea of a hitter’s offensive stats. Especially when people don’t have much time and you can just rattle off an OPS.

ISO is so useless i dont’ even know what it exists. It tells you NOTHING. It just isolates the power – for any people that, for some reason, would think that would help them in anything. No wonder it disappeared 60 or so years ago I guess like a lot of other inventions.

Believe me son, i don’t need an “ISO” to tell me about anyone’s power.

Anyway, i’m tired already of discussing a low level player who we don’t know will be the next Alex Ochoa, Fred Lewis, or even have a baseball career.

Somebody else may have a more solid OPS because even though it’s lower I’d rather the lower OPS that shows more ability to hit and hit with power involved in it. That’s why OPS is another one of those deceiving “text msg” stats that throw too many specialized and not so specialized intangibles all into one.

And that’s wrong. All it’s good for is a quick overview without too much regard to accuracy. That’s why all these newer stats created all kinds of ridiculous arguments.

A very pitcher friendly league btw.
Meanwhile a 22-year old Pitcher in Luis Mateo dominates the league – as would be expected for his age. Mateo was a full 3 years older than Nimmo.
Nimmo’s numbers are far more impressive if you consider context such as age & league effects.

To me his 2012 season was quite encouraging considering his age & modest game experience. To me, he’s an easy Top 6 in the org. right now.

I’d expect Mateo to skip the SAL and go straight to St. Lucie. If he dominates there, then I’ll take him more seriously…

They had the eye, they knew what they liked, and they made millions.

If you can’t hit you can be patient until here to Kingdom Come. I’m sure the history of minor league baseball is filled with thousands upon thousands of young men who were “patient” but could not HIT. Fred Lewis had a great eye and nice looking swing and oh i am SO sure that The Father, Son, & Holy Ghost thought they can turn water into wine with him like they plan on doing with some of these OF scrubs they signed.

And let me tell you something else about those scrubs they signed, they signed so many that one may be bound to be the next Mike Baxter and whoop-de-doo that’s what we call success?
They ain’t gonna change, you may get a guy that just happens to have a good year or connect with a coach like has happened 800 billion times before in baseball history but it’s not gonna be because of some kind of magical or mystical repetitive “Theory of Deliberate Practice” where some goons think that talent can be created from nothing. Good coaching can always bring out something in a player who maybe didn’t connect well with his previous coaches or for whatever the reason.

But you’re not gonna start magically turning scrubs and cheap journeyman into a way of saving money while trying to win championships. The Mets need ACTUAL VETERAN MAJOR LEAGUE TALENT RIGHT NOW. Frank Cashen didn’t wait for Dwight Gooden to come up before getting Keith Hernandez, Gooden came up and was thrust right into the belly of the beast immediately and rightfully so.
Alderson’s wasted the entire off season thinking he can turn water into wine signing all these scrubs and if he’s going to do this in the minors too you’re gonna have an organization full of mediocre talent that excels at walking. Nobody needs that.

I don’t think his upside is limited at all. I doubt he sticks at SS but I could see him as a solid defensive and plus offensive 2nd baseman. The kid has a sweet short compact swing and has surprising pop for a kid his size. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s our starting 2nd baseman in 3-4 years.
