Good one on finding a Jason Bay card Joe, I have been an avid collector for years until about 10 years ago when my wife told me to stop, donate or sell them so I had to stop and only pick up Met cards here and there.

I picked up a few Wright Rookie card way back as for Jose ones also so here’s to the almighty card companies who continue to either raise the price for the same amount or lower the price for less cards; this thing with Topps, been doing this for years now is shameful having to wait for certain cards till almost Opening Day or hope that the local dealer, the few left, has opened up some boxes and can get you the ones you need.

Onward and though I did at one time enjoy the gum, glad it is gone cause of a the stains on great cards it used to leave.

Looking forward to more Mets in the next series and thanks Joe for the list, makes it easier for us aficianados of the cardboard !

The 2012 cards (this year’s release) look even better. Not having a license from MLB Properties is a problem for Panini, but they go deeper into the draft with their autograph selection than Topps does. It would be nice if someone could buy them a calendar though…

Wow…brings back memories for me. Did the same thing in grade school, only about a decade earlier than you.

When I moved out of my parents house, I cleaned out my childhood room and threw out my entire baseball card collection. Don’t know what I was thinking. I can’t even imagine whose rookie cards I might have had from the mid 60s to mid 70s.

Thanks. I don’t really have much time for it myself (had to put off working on Gundam models to free up the time and space to work on the site), but I do what I can. I’m just glad to be able to contribute something unique to the fan community.

Yes, but not exactly. The MLBPA sets the rules for rookie cards and only Familia and McHugh meet their criteria (out of 53 total players called up in August or later who are currently eligible for rookie cards). If Wheeler follows the same path as Harvey, he’ll be eligible in time for Update this fall.

And BTW the most expensive card that I needed to finish that I got on ebay was a Matt Tuiasosopo who is with the Bison’s last year. That friggen card was $40-$60 if I remember. What a bust.

Very cool. I got back into it for a little bit in 1999 – 2004 but stopped again. The market was just too saturated with too much memorabilia and way too many sets. I know they did some consolidation but probably not enough to get me back in. Especially seeing your post on all you bough and hopw little of a return you got.

The last set I put together was the first Bowman Sterling set in 2004. It was $50 a pack with only something like 5 cards a pack. The set did have a cool auto-patch of a young D-Money.

Familia was up in the majors, so that probably why he got a rookie card and not Wheeler. Though no Harvey irks me, as does no Wright. That Dickey card is pretty nice though.

Of all the things that were NOT thrown out ( toys, comics and such), my card collection was not. Still have them all and I put them in books.

13 cards is better than average for a 330-card set and matches the number of Mets in last year’s Series 1. David Wright will be in Series 2 at card number 400 (a short printed photo variation was released in Series 1) and Zack Wheeler is not yet eligible to have a rookie card (only Jeurys Familia and Collin McHugh were eligible for Series 1). You can probably expect a McHugh RC in Series 2 (with Harvey, maybe Edgin, and any of the offseason acquisitions who stick) and a Wheeler RC in Update. It’s a 990-card set in total, you can’t expect to get everything in the first 330 cards.

We used to play a “war” type matching game using the colors on the cards when I was in middle school in the late 70′s. Those were some pretty horrid Mets teams but I discovered that having A LOT of cards gave you a distinct advantage in that you could eventually wear out an opponent with fewer cards. Over a 3 year stretch i amassed 3 big shopping bags full of bundles of cards mostly from playing that game. I had every team several times over. My mom (God rest her soul) cleaned out my room when i went into the service … and … she tossed them, along with my comic book collection … (!!) She never understood my exasperation when I found out. Only after I explained to her that I could have probably paid for a semester of college with that stuff did she realize. Oh well …
