If you read the original SI story, the first letter of each word in the blurb above the story spelled out something like Happy April Fools Day. George Plimpton was awesome and it was pretty much clear it was a hoax almost immediately.

Sidd Fitch was real. The reason why he never made it to the majors was because he was abducted by aliens out of the cornfield. He is from Iowa; it happens all the time.

He did become an intergalactic all star for a number of years. Bill Lee and him pitched on the same team at the end of Lee’s career.

Fitch’s HOF chances are questionable because he tested positive for tainted Tang.

This was great. I can still remember the excitement after originally being duped and bragging about him to my friends and Yankee fans at school. Even they were duped. lol

This is great, thanks for sharing. I enjoyed this almost more than the original story.

I remember when it came out. I didn’t have a subscription to SI so by the time I heard about it and read the original story, it was already pegged as a hoax. Still have the original story filed somewhere here on my PC.

Lmao, great job john… I do remember hearing about this story, Lol, i was trapped i won’t lie, funny thing i remember was how GM’s were calling asking about the safety of the players, lol, then supposedly some reporters alledgedly seeing him pitch LMAO!! this was a great hoax done by SI. As a Mets fans, with gooden and straw already in the majors, i thought holy sh**, game over!!!!!!
