What is his game? He's only hit 20 HR once. And he's only topped 100 RBIs once.

So, power isn't his game. OBP isn't his game. Defense isn't his game. Base running isn't his game.

By the looks of it, baseball isn't his game either.

Some the best Teams NY has ever seen was comprised of BAD BOYS!

86 Mets were hardly angels...
The great Yankee teams paid out more in BAIL money than they actually paid the players themselves...Billy Martin, Mickey Mantle etc....

And the Brooklyn Dodgers were just as bad right down to thier Manager who wrote the book

"Nice Guys Finish Last!"

Well Hitman you have to admit it wasn't his fielding that sent him down to the Minors it was his bat...If he had hit the damn ball the way he should no one would have a big issue with his fielding....
Sure it would be mentioned as bad but if he was hitting the ball out of the park like everyone thinks he can no one would care much...

would have made for a much more balanced top of the order than what we had.

Gary what he dd was a classic case of someoe not really knowing what the stat does or how it is calculated just looked up off a table and spouted as usefull when it really isn't.

If you don't know what is in the stat or how it is calculated then you can't be sure it even applies to the player in question....
You don't judge power hitters by OBP and BA no more than you judge a leadoff hitter by his SLG or HR totals.

debatable about the "best". but that still does not mean he is actually good.

and I don't actually want Hairston back, but I would still take him over Young for a small amount more money.

I actually would just as soon see Andrew Brown as the RH platoon guy instead of either one of these guys.

I actually agree with everything you said....

Except maybe Mel Gibson draws almost as much as we do...LOL

I personally would have preferred we sign someone else but think about it from this perspective...

Delmon Young got signed BEFORE the guy we might sign....

Thats pretty telling don't you agree?

Metro we can definitely use any stat to state a position very easily. And again it's not just about stats it's about the whole picture of the team. I will put he pro's and con's down.

Pro's
750k - for this team that is huge
right handed bat
Does have a positive oWAR
Good post season numbers which translates he can handle pressure well
Decent amount of HR power and RBI totals which this team desperately needs

Con's
Poor defensively
poor bb/so ratio
ground into too many DP's

I personally don't want him on the team due to the personal issue and I feel that this team needs to get way better defensively BUT his bat would be a huge improvement over someone like Baxter.

To be honest, I´d rather have Andrew Brown on a minor league deal than Young on a 750 k with incentives major league deal at this point.
The skill set is pretty similar, though Brown is better defensively. Both have pop & hit lefties well. Neither figures to get OB at a high clip.
Of course, Young was once a highly touted early draft pick while Brown is a non-descript late rounder.

And neither should be getting a lot of playing time on a good team.

"For those that fuss at some for thinking like fantasy baseball owners it appears anyone wanting to sign him no matter what is indeed just doing it based on HR and RBI without looking at defense of makeup."

You can make that same argument for the crowd that is calling for the Mets to re-sign Scott Hairston!!!

And Hairston is asking for much more than what Delmon got...although Delmon is a much better player...The point is $750,000 for a player that is better and cheaper than Hairston...the only argument you have why Delmon wouldnt be a good signing would be past non baseball related issues.

For the record I am not pro Delmon Young but I understand the argument by Mets fans who want to see this bum Alderson improve the team and are willing to sacrifice defense for some major league help in the outfield....but to the group here who keeps yelling re-sign Hairston they should be the last ones to comment how Delmon Young is a bad signing because of his terrible defense because Hairston is just as bad defensively and Young brings much more to the table on offense

Your argument falls on deaf ears because he is only being paid "$750,000" for a year...

You fail to mention that most of you want the Mets to re-sign Scott Hairston and pay him a couple Million....For all Youngs flaws he is still a FAR SUPERIOR PLAYER to Hairston who is also TERRIBLE on defense.

Whats even worst about your argument is you post all these stats trying to downplay his worth YET what does it say that with all that if the Mets were the team to sign him he'd be the "BEST" Outfielder on the team!!! right now

Hey Roxio,

Here at MMO we have a group of people who judge players based on OFF THE FIELD crap!!! Instead of what they are paid to do which is PLAY BASEBALL.

I still to this day hear people praise that SUPER RACIST Ty Cobb yet in the same breathe bash any modern day player that has any off-field issue.

You would think that these same characters here that post how terrible Delmon Young is are Saints in their personal lives.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here is the BIAS here with these posters here that are against signing Delmon Young.
1. Facts are Delmon Young got drunk and walked around NYC and hurled a bunch of racial slurs at a group of guys that as it turned out werent even Jewish.(so we established he was sh*t faced and the booze was talking)
2. BUT these same fans who dont want Delmon Young for those actions wanted Shin-Soo choo and Cocoa Crisp who both got sh*t faced drunk one night got in a car and got caught and busted for a DUI
Whats worst getting drunk and walking down the street calling people names or getting plastered and getting in a vehicle with the ability to potentially kill people????
Dont let these few idiots deter you from visiting the site...there is no logic to there thinking....and winning baseball games is the last thing they are interested in
forget the attitude issue for now if you want. Focus on the player.
and when you do that, he really has not been good for years. 2011 and 2012, 1,000+ PAs, he has about a .701 OPS and .299 OBP. Slg. right about .400. 1 SB. 15 HRs/year. Widely considered to be one of the worst defensive OFs around.
so even if he was a total choirboy, he still is not good.
so what are the big Met OF needs? Speed, defense, RH batter, power. And of course, being the Mets, I suppose cheap...
OK, so what does Delmon bring to the table, based on this profile, if you believe the last 2 full years are what he is?. No speed. No defense. marginal power (HR or otherwise). He is RH. and did sign cheap.
so no, it does not look like he actually fills any met need.
the postseason? Well, those numbers are marginally better than his career, but the only outlier is slugging %. And as with most guys, these are small sample sizes.
last 4 PS series, all 15-19 PAs (SSS), he had an OPS of .667, .513, 1.186, 1.043. So how do you interpret that? some series he is mr. unclutch, some he is an awesome clutch performer? Or is it more likely the normal fluctuation in such a short series, where he had a couple of big hits?
if he really was a 1.000 OPS guy, wouldn't that come out in the 500+ PAs in the regular season?
anyway, long winded way of saying, he was cheap for a reason, and not just the hate crime arrest!
"Who cares if he can’t catch every fly ball hit. He will make up for it offensively."
Yeah, I heard the same thing about Lucas Duda last season. Remind me again how that turned out? Like I said earlier, feed him sliders away and he'll foolishly chase them every time. Just because it's his "prime years", he'll magically show up? He should've showed up by now, especially after he produced 3 years ago, but all he's done was fall backwards. I'm supposed to believe he'll hit 35 HRs when he couldn't cut it after TWO heavy hitters before him in a lineup, one of which is the Triple Crown winner & MVP? Stop reaching.
