The New York Daily News is reporting that longtime Orioles manager Earl Weaver suffered a heart attack early Saturday morning while on an Orioles fantasy cruise in the Caribbean. He collapsed and was unable to be revived. Weaver, 82, managed the Baltimore Orioles for 17 seasons, compiling a 1,480-1,060 record. He had five seasons with 100-plus wins, including three consecutive seasons from 1969-1971. The only time one of his team’s finished with a sub-.500 record was in 1986, [...]

If The Mets Season Started Today…

shea apple

Here I am—counting down the days until the regular season begins. Then I thought about the Mets starting lineup and cringed. I’m not a big believer in looking forward to the future because I’m not Nostradamus. I’ve watched too many seasons where the Mets looked good and then had a Fukushima-like meltdown. I don’t know what the Mets have in Noah Syndergaard, I don’t know if Johan Santana will ever be a fraction of what [...]

MMO Mailbag: Wheeler vs. Harvey

matt harvey zack wheeler

I received an email from Justin after I posted about which Mets prospects will make their debut in 2013 and what the odds were. Justin asks… I liked your post about the 2013 Debuts and was wondering if we could see Wheeler or anyone else hit the ground running the same way Matt Harvey did last season. What do you think Wheeler will do when he finally arrives and will he be as good or [...]

jose reyes

The Blue Jays formally introduced Jose Reyes to fans and media on Friday in Toronto. General manager Alex Anthopoulos was very excited to add Reyes who he called a catalyst and one of the most dynamic players he ever saw: “I don’t know that we’re going to see another shortstop like this in Toronto for a long time,” the GM said Toronto’s Rogers Centre Friday afternoon. “I don’t know that we could ever think we’re going to [...]

FanGraphs: Mets 2013 ZiPS Projections

mets logo

FanGraphs’ Dan Szymborski has released his 2013 ZiPS projections for the New York Mets. You can check out all the projections which are very extensive right here. I happen to enjoy the comments because they provide some context to how they determined their projections. Batters Because the author is consumed with sloth, he will not look at the 14 clubs previously considered in this series to verify it, but will instead state the following — namely, [...]

MMO Commenting Policy

Updated 1/18 I just had to delete 67 comments from readers and writer alike. Still more to chop, but seriously what gives? Why must some of you engage in a wicked game of “johnny on the pony” and only add to the situation we are trying to rectify? What’s with this new thing of everyone calling each other out because they have an “agenda”? Everyone accusing the other of having an agenda? That’s rich… It’s [...]

Which Prospects Will Debut In 2013?

Wheeler is the odds-on favorite to debut in 2013, but there are plenty others to keep an eye on.

So which prospects can we expect to see debut for the Mets this season? Will we see another dazzling Harvey-esque type debut to instill some hope for the future? This is a good question and one that will be more fun to tackle than all the questions about the major league squad. 2:1 Odds Zack Wheeler, RHP – Only a disaster of epic proportions will keep Wheeler from joining the Mets before the All Star [...]

Wheeler Has Outside Shot At Rotation Spot

zack wheeler

Sandy Alderson, who was a guest of Mike Francesa on WFAN, said that if he fails to add another starter for the rotation, that Zack Wheeler will be in a group that will be vying for the fifth spot in the rotation. “It’s unlikely he starts at the Major League Level,” Alderson said. “But look, hypothetically, let’s say we don’t add anybody between now and Spring Training. We don’t add a starting pitcher. Now, you’re [...]
