Let’s be honest if the Mets sign Pavano or anyone else for more that say John Lannan got, most fans should lose their minds. That said, you’re talking about bargain bin shopping and lotsa hoping’ for the best here. That said, get the best you can get for the cheapest price. Give Mejia and Familia more development time in Vegas. I get that Vegas skews the numbers of pitcher’s ERA…but so does actual MLB lineups. They can develop in AAA where it won’t hurt the now-perpeutually hurting Mets, they come come up and start later, if they bomb then…then you know it’s bullpen for sure.

Personally I would rather play Mejia and/or Familia and see them get rocked as MLB players that could be sent to fix the pen than to hire an outside bandaid and leave them to lose any value they might have in that launchpad in Las Vegas that will mkae thier ERA climb faster than a Monkey of Meth!

I am not feeling Pavano either. I would rather take a shot on Marcum unless he wants to much. Why not go for a Eric Bedard,Dice K,or Young, over Pavano, Bedard will get hurt right in time for Wheeler to take over. They are all injury risks actually, and they are all holding down spot till Wheeler comes up so really whoever they get the best deal on is the one they should get

I would certainly prefer Chris Young over Pavano.
Young may only be a 6 inning pitcher – but he usually keeps the team in the game through 5 or 6 innings before teams start pounding him.
Obviously, only on a 1-year deal.

And solely to make sure, Wheeler and Mejia get enough time at AAA to be prepared for the majors and aren´t forced into action out of need.

Colin McHugh could also use half a season at AAA – though as an older prospect with a lower ceiling, rushing him a bit wouldn´t be a problem as he probably won´t receive too many opportunities anyway.

Pavano is now a 36-year-old veteran. Pretty much what Steve Trachsel used to be around 2005 / 2006 – albeit more brittle. So while he´d gibble up innings if healthy, I doubt he is better than Hefner – McHugh or Laffey.

If he is signed as spring competition to a 1-year, 1.5 million $ or so deal with a few incentives, sure, why not ?
But Young has more upside when healthy, imho. And obviously, either one is disposable once the time is right for Wheeler and / or Mejia.
Familia to me btw should be a reliever. I don´t see the command with him to get through a major league lineup for 5 or 6 innings, besides lacking a decent changeup.

If that is the case and they both must start in AAA then I guess it makes it more of solution. However, if that is indeed the case and they aren’t even candidates then they need much better than Pavano anyway.

I don’t know how much he will cost. The only reason for bringing in MLB arms is to let Mejia and Familia get AAA innings. For me it’s all about the cost since we’re gambling here and hoping for the best.

I like the idea of Zambrano. He showed he could pitch effectively out of the BP if he doesnt cut it as a starter. I am not sure of his attitude these days but a 1 year deal to reestablish himself might work for him.

I don’t care all that much about his reputation with the Yankees, or not being able to “handle” NY. I would pass simply based on age, stuff, production and health, regardless of his name.

How about Carlos Zambrano? isn’t he available? At least that is a RH power bat off hte bench!

Only way I bring in Pav is on a MILB contract with an invite to ST. No guaranteed spot no millions. If he says pass, so be it. Even if they signed him they would still need a 5th starter, LOL.

I tend to agree with you. Pavano is not one who holds a great deal of interest although a guy can mature as his career progresses (not necessarily saying Pavano did; just that it is possible). Personally, I think there are better options out there.

As for the money, just because it is there does not mean it should be spent. That mindset is what got the Mets into this situation. If spending money on a 5th starter is going to significantly help the team, then I am all for it. However, how many of the pitchers out there are worth $2M-$3M a year. If this is what Pavano wants, go with someone for half that price because I think he will fall short of it in NYC. As much as I am not a big fan of Young, I almost prefer him to Pavano.
