That is what we were saying about 2011. Why didn’t Sandy let them play the year out and see where it shuck? If nothing more, he would not have the legacy of throwing in the towel that year which would have done wonders in terms of good will – and less declining ticket sales.

We already know that Duda is better in left than he is in right. Andrew Brown is an above average outfielder. Cowgill is an at least average outfielder, probably above average. Baxter and Kirk both are at least average.
I think if Den Dekker and Brown are both on the roster on opening day, we’re in for a pleasant surprise defensively. If it’s not Den Dekker yet, than it at least has the potential to be average.
Between Duda returning to his stronger outfield corner, and the subtraction of Hairston, the outfield is sure to progress defensively. Every other player in question is at least average with a few having a high chance of being above average.

There is potential in this outfield. but that’s all it is, is potential. I will be watching to see what becomes of it. I don’t care what anyone says, there is a reason to watch these guys this year.

He contends this is how other successful teams like the Giants and Nationals did things – they were floundering and took it slow with draft picks and then building upon them when ready.

Of course, he doesn’t mention that the Giants were a dominating team for eight years between 1997 and 2004 and that the roster that started out that streak only vaguely resembled that of the one that ended it. And if one looks at the 1997 roster, the Giants did not begin that streak with any re-building plan devised a few years before.

If Sandy can’t acquire Coco Crisp at a reasonable cost, Valdespin had better shag about 5,000 flies a day in CF, and when he is done with that he can head to the batting cages to call ball/strike on 5,000 pitches without a bat in his hand. Until Den Dekker proves he can handle AAA pitching, up the BB rate and lower the K rate, if he ever does, Spin is by far the best internal solution in borth CF and leadoff.

I don’t think Bourne is the answer. He is a better defensive Juan Pierre. The pick is nice to have unless you use it on a Brandon Nimmo. How is he doing?
One thing it does teach you is if you trade away major leaguers and ignore a set of positions for three off seasons you end up here.
