Familia doesn’t have the command necessary to get through 6 innings or more with 100 to 110 pitches besides having failed to develop an adequate changeup ( or another offspeed pitch) over 550+ IP in the minors. It seems highly unlikely he will gain it now. Thus, I believe he’s better off in a role he could thrive in as a power reliever.

Mejia’s command is already better – and he has 200 fewer IP of experience and thus should have much higher odds to stick in a rotation – if his arm holds…

Famillia
Burke
Ranirez
Carson or Laffey if they go with 2 lefties. If not will probably be Hefner they may want to keep him in the minors so he can be starter. If not he will be our long man.

Francisco will probably start on the DL

Parnell, Edgin,Ramirez(Elvin) & Famillia have upside and I want to see play out. We should be able to get 2 or 3 solid relievers out of this group i hope. Ramirez is just a gut feeling. The rest of them have flashed upside. Burke is going to be interesting. Ever since he changed his delivery he has been steady, nothing tremendous. I can see him being a 4th or 5th guy pitching to a 3.5 ERA.

We have so many young arms I dont really want to block by signing bums. We should sign Lindstrom & take a flyer on Wilson.

If I remember correctly (too lazy to look it up right now) Mejia was doing fairly well as a starter last year. As soon as they put him in the BP – more b/c of the need on the big club than anything else – he really started to tail off big time. His stats as starter vs. reliever last season were big. Sounded like Mejia could just not wrap his mind around working out of the BP. He’s gone on record as saying he considers himself a starter – unlike Familia who doesn’t seem to mind what role they put him in.

Yeah why not sign Dice-K? I like Mejia but since he came back from surgery he has not been able to put batters away. Most experts had him pegged as a reliever to begin with but I think that was more because of his size and not his repertoire. Personally I thought because of the repertoire he was developing he could be a starter. Any way you slice it he wont be able to make the jump innings wise this year.So why not roll the dice on one of these guys and he can contribute down the road this season. It’s always good to have lilke 7 starters because of injury. Dice-K had told Japanese papers he wanted to pitch in SD because of the size of the park. Before his injuries with Boston his stuff was electric. We may get nothing but on a minor league deal it cant hurt.

I’m standing by the cheap guys I think can help: Maarcum, Delmon Young & Lindstrom. They wont break the bank & can maybe keep us in contention & if not be traded at the deadline.

Going to be interesting come ST. I lost count on how many arms we signed with an invite to ST.
Right now, we’ve really only got 3 locked down for the BP by my count: FF, Parnell and Edgin.

If they sign a vet starter then he SHOULD be in AAA instead of competing for the pen. They need starters in AAA to step in when Johan gets injured or if Gee isn’t coming back well.
