If you recall, both 2010 and 2011 saw him finish on the DL. 2012 saw Niese in the rotation from OD through game 162.

As for him increasing his innings, it is safe to say he would have logged more except the Mets went with 6 pitchers the last 6-8 weeks. This easily cost Niese 3 or 4 starts.

Overall I agree with the assessment. The Mets made it clear about Niese that he is a major piece of their future. 2012 saw him take a big step forward and 2013 needs to be the same.
