Well Peter I would ask what exactly are we saving by having a guy in AAA to replace one of our Rotation arms?

If lets say Niese (or better and more likely Santana) goes down…
What is that replacement going to do for you in the long run?

NOTHING!

So I say play the guys you have and if an injury happens go sign one of the unsigned guys that are still there to play baindaid or audition some other kid in the system who is getting too old to think staying in the Minors is going to really help him…

Sometimes those guys just rise to the occassion….

Rememeber Tom Brady was a 6th round “Just take him to have a body” pick and look how he has done….

Gee was never considered special or relatively ready but he has done fine hasn’t he?
No one saw Rick Reed coming either….

Sometime what players do not do in the Minors gets done in the Majors because it’s thier dream to stay and they find the motivation to do what needs to be done to stay there once they get thier shot.

I agree Mejia has better stuff of course. But coming off the injury I would like to see him just get starts at triple A. He did not look good last year, they should just leave him alone and if anything call him up to start mid season. Overall for pitching they should add a cheap veteran starter and two bullpen pieces, one with closer experience. You have to account for mid season trades and injuries. that is why I think they need to sign a veteran. Plus someone like Marcum could have trade value, of course only on a one year reasonable deal.

But comparing him to Mejia is not really very compelling considering Mejia was coming off surgery at the time…

My Issues with Hefner are about his inability to get past the 5th and 6th inning….
He did finally get to the 8th in late August and then pitched 7 innings back to back at the end of the year….

Does he deserve a chance to be the 5th starter….Well thats what ST is for and why I say don’t sign a starting Pitcher go get the OF we need with whatever pennies Sandy is begrudgingly willing to spend.

Between Hefner, Mejia and Familia I really don’t see the need to keep those guys down by putting a bandaid over their potential contribution to the rotation.

The thinking may be is he is the best long relief option on the team right now where the other options are not as good. You certainly wouldn’t want to make a Mejia or Familia a long relif guy they still could have some value if not in the rotation but as trade chips.

We really just need to cover the 5th spot until Wheeler is ready to come up and then the 5th spot is set until a judgement on Santana is made.

So any thoughts of bringing in a 5th starter via FA is just dumb, does nothing for this year anyway and only holds up the few guys who we could audition in a year even the GM thinks is not winnable which is the BEST time to audition young kids since it can’t hurt you.

To be honest, I wish the Mets would take the money for a #5 starter, and add 2-3 bullpen arms. Mejia, Familia, or Hefner can compete for #5. Winner gets the spot, next guy is the long man, third guy to Vegas to be on taxi squad with Schwinden until Wheeler is ready come July (or hopefully sooner). The rotation isn’t great, but it’s solid and no where near the disaster the bullpen looks to be. Like I said on another thread, the good news is that bullpens are impossible to predict, bad news…ours looks possibly horrendous.

I’d be okay with Hefner as a fifth starter until Wheeler comes up, which won’t be that deep into the season, and then Hefner can serve in the bullpen and as a spot starter.

Ive been preaching this since August, I think Heffneris more than enough of a formidable No 5 man in our rotation. I dont think we need to search for a different #5. Wed obviously be better off expending energy on our OF & bullpen issues.

Agree with ya Joe, Hefner is the fifth starter if they do not sign anyone, at least he should be. And he provides depth as well in case of injury.

Unless we pick up a front of rotation pitcher, which is not happening, I think most fans would rather have the Mets use a pitcher we already have in our system. It’s better than giving away money to a has been or a retread coming back from an injury. Wheeler should be taking spot sometime during year,

He had his moments, I certainly wouldn’t give up on him. He had his moments and certainly hit his share of bumps but that’s to be expected. You figure he’ll improve and even some improvement would easilly put him in that 5th starter’s role.

pretty much the way I feel. I have him pencilled in for the long man/spot starter role in the pen. Probably competing with Laffey for that at the moment.
