With a bunch of teams interested in Morse, I doubt it makes sense parting with any sort of significant prospect in the Mets´ situation.
Sure, if you can get Morse for Robert Carson or Elvin Ramirez straight up you do it.
But – more likely – the asking price would be something like Josh Edgin and Rafael Montero, in which case this makes absolutely no sense.
We´re talking about a 33-year-old corner OF / 1bman who probably won´t be a factor on the 2015 Mets – unlike prospects to be traded for him.

Either it´s Hairston for cash or stick with what (little) you have or trade for a younger player you can control for several more years and who can be part of the solution.

Figured out the reason Hairston was allowed to become a free agent.

Last September Sandy said his priority was to obtain a power hitting outfielder. How else could he “obtain” Hairston if he didn’t release him first?

Shrewd move by Sandy. Brilliant, simply brilliant.

even Scott Hairston is too much of a financial commitment for Wilpon. this despite the fact that our outfield is a joke (and Alderson made the joke himself). Really…the Mets will hold out for a month just to save a million bucks. it’s worse than demoralizing…it’s completely pathetic.

I think it’s actually unbelievable that we have reached the point where the Mets are agonizing over whether to give Scott Hairston a 2nd year ar $3 million or $4 million. This isn’t a long term deal, it’s not particularly expensive and while no superstar, he was 3rd on the team in HR’s last year.

If you want Hairston vice Morse then you have no concern about talent, and therefore no concern about producing a winning team. Hairston is a sub. Morse is a true power hitter who would fit in perfectly behind Davis.

Well, I think he’ll be marginally better, so that in itself doesn’t justify the Salary he’ll make, but considering the injury history this team has had, I think it will be needed. He’s proven he can hit for power, I’ve not heard one word of him being a bad clubhouse guy and I like his dimples (kidding). Would I prefer a healthy Sizemore or have Bourn? Yeah, but neither are coming to the Mets and Hairsrton will be a good soldier and, if on a two year deal, can slide into the 4th OF, bench bat role no problem.

Morse would be preferred over Scotty as that big stick would play great every day in the #5 spot. I bet Ike would pay for the limo ride to St. Lucie. However, the price should be very high. The Mets may be better off signing Scotty to platoon in RF and LF and use their trade chips to secure a much needed CF/leadoff hitter like Fowler (controllable affordable for 3 years) or Coco.

Tex, this year is a pretty simple question. How much better will the team be with hairston splitting time in RF vs. having Brown or Hoffman doing it? and will the difference be enough to matter, and be worth the $?

I like Morse better as a player, but the big question is, what players does it take to pry him away? Hairston only costs some money (probably no more than Morse even), so from that standpoint Scott is more attractive.

2 years should not be an issue. Not like they aren’t going to need another RH bench/platoo type next year.

could be an easy vesting option too, or a lower AAV (say, instead of 1/5 maybe 2/8, so in effect the 2nd year is pretty cheap).

does not sound like he is going to be getting a salary that is going to break the bank or would not be movable or eatable if needed.

What if they could get Morse. He hits from both sides and you could use him everyday. The outfield market is getting crowded with dbacks overstocked and selling as well. Hairston is still out there for a reason.

Two years should not hurt much, he can be useful off the bench next year vs lefties as long as he is not getting like 7 mill a year.

I think that it would behoove them to give a 2 year deal. When all the money comes off the books, this team is still going to need a RH masher off the bench. So even if he gets 2 year/7 million, with a 3mil/4mil split, that 2nd year wont kill the team.

I don’t think it really helps the team this year (as they need a true, everyday type guy), but Hairston should help more than hinder.
