2013 Hall of Fame: It Doesn’t Look Good For Mike Piazza

baseball_hall_fame1

Yesterday, Clayton did a nice job digging up as many Hall of Fame ballots as he could to put together a sneak preview of what we could expect on Wednesday when the BBWAA will announce who will be inducted into Cooperstown.

With about 12% of all the ballots in, it looks like Mike Piazza will not have nearly enough votes to make the Class of 2013, and in fact the data shows that only second baseman Craig Biggio will get elected.

It’s very sad to say the least, and in a short while Jessep will have a post up that I urge all of you to read. So check back in about an hour.

Original Post 1/6

In the months leading up to the official announcement of the results of the 2013 Hall of Fame ballot, many voting eligible BBWAA writers released their choices on which players they selected to make it to Cooperstown. Yesterday, I spent 12 hours compiling as many of these released ballots as I could find, tallied them, and came up with a small sample of what the 2013 ballot results may look like.

I found 72 complete released ballots and 11 partially released ballots in searching yesterday out of the approximately 575 total ballots. In all, this ended up being about 13%-15% of all the ballots cast. Many of the voters are retired and do not have a Twitter or media outlet to publicly announce their choices, so I was satisfied with this number.

Anyway, without further ado, here is your 2013 Hall of Fame sneek peek:

2013 sample Hall of fame ballot

These results tell us a number of things. First, if this trend continues with the remaining 500 votes, Craig Biggio will become a first ballot Hall of Famer with his longtime teammate still missing the mark. The likes of Jack Morris, Lee Smith, Fred McGriff and Larry Walker could potentially suffer from the large incoming class and the controversy that has come with it. It seems that many are grouping Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens together in their ballot results as well as Mark McGwire and Rafael Palmeiro. I was also surprised to see that there is next to no support for Sammy Sosa, even from those who voted for steroid users; I would be surprised if he ended up with 7% of the vote when the official ballot announcement is made.

As for Mike Piazza, I was glad to see a high showing for him as well as Bagwell, however the reasons that many voters withheld from Piazza were dreadful. From back acne to hearsay, advanced sabermetrics and his groin muscle injury in 2003, it seemed as if writers were pulling reasons out of the air not to vote for him, simply because he didn’t pass their “eye test”, which is a shame. If not for the cheaters like Bonds and Clemens casting a dark shadow on the game, Piazza and (and likely Bagwell) would be first-ballot Hall of Famers. I digress.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this small sample and we will see how accurate this turns out to be come Wednesday. One thing to keep in mind is those who release their ballots tend to have some level of controversy involved, so we may only be looking at some of the more extreme ballots.

Here is the complete list of writers with their ballots that I collected. Those marked with a *** mean they are an incomplete ballot meaning they stated some players they would vote for, but did not release their entire ballot:

  • Great job, Clayton. I know how tedious this was, but what you have here is a sad look ahead of what’s to come on Wednesday. At least our own John Delcos did the right thing.

    • Thanks Joe, and it’s really sad that Piazza in all likelihood will not be elected on the first ballot. He deserves it. But the reasons behind not voting for him are ridiculous. Many writers are waiting for his biography to come out before voting for him.

The sabermetrics argument that his advanced stats don’t hold up is irrelevent because a) he was a catcher, his stats aren’t going to be as high. And b) In Bill James’ two major Hall of Fame statistics, Piazza is only behind Bonds and Clemens as far as who is most worthy for the hall according to pure stats.

I actually expect his percentages to fall closer to 55%-60% as all the ballots come in unfortunately as many will hold off on the first ballot for him just like they did for Bagwell.

  • Nice….thanks for the peek at this.

Retired writers can still vote? I didn’t realize that. Might be the only job where – when you retire – you still have the power to affect a person’s legacy – i.e. getting into the HOF.
That just strikes me as…not right.

    • Once you do your ten years you become eligible to vote, If you serve another ten you become a lifetime member and voter. Our own Delcos is a lifetime member.

      • I guess I didn’t realize about the ‘lifetime’.
Read an article from one of those lifetime voters the other day – cannot remember who. He used to cover the Mets up until 2002 (among other teams for other sports).

He wrote the article explaining why he was giving up his HOF vote permanently. Said he’d been away from the game for too long and he didn’t feel it was fair to be voting when he wasn’t involved anymore. He could have kept his vote just for the bragging rights but he felt the integrity of the HOF meant more than that. He said it wouldn’t be fair to the nominees if all he was doing was looking at stats. Made sense to me, I was impressed.

Now…I guess even if you’re retired you could still follow the game, the players, careers, controversies and all that goes along with baseball. At least you’d be an informed voter.

  • Anyone who voted for Don Mattingly and not Dale Murphy should seriously have their vote revoked.

  • Okay….I get not voting for the steroid users. If that is a choice of a voter, them keep all sluggers out. I see some of the ballots have Biggio and Bagwell. To me, if one is anti dopers getting in, Biggio makes some sense. But I dont get Bagwell without Piazza. Neither was tied to PEDs even if there were allegations. The Mitchell Report nor any other sources named either as a user. So, if one is going to put in Bagwell, you have to put in Piazza unless the voter does not feel Piazza worthy, PED use aside, which in my mind is impossible.

    • Many writers hold the “first ballot” as even more prestigious than getting in any other year of eligibility. Bagwell most likely would’ve been a first-ballot Hall of Famer if not for the PEDs whispers.

Same will probably go for Piazza. Once he isn’t a first ballot candidate, him and Bagwell will probably see similar voting numbers.

  • First off, kudos Clay. Good work.
The guys who wrote in Pete Rose and voted Piazza are my heroes.

  • Wow! Well done indeed. Nice job Clayton.

  • Thanks Satish and MNJ! It was a process to say the least.

And Satish you reminded me I forgot to include that in my post! I didn’t know you could write-in names until I saw that. If so someone needs to vote for Eddie Gaedel! ;)

  • Wow! Jack Morris was a sure lock to get in the Hall.

  • Unbelievable. Bonds gets more votes than Smith and Morris still gets the shaft?

  • I thought Raines was an admitted coke head? Rock Raines. Piazza get punished on innuendo and Raines gets in on admitted cocaine use during, before and after games? No wonder this country is going to hell in a hand basket.

    • cocaine isnt the same thing as PED’s…

and the 80′s were filled with coke heads….

the high that lasts from a hit of coke is a few minutes….the crash is alot longer !!!
Impaired thinking, confused, anxious, depressed, short tempered, panic attacks, suspiciousness, dilated pupils, sleeplessness, loss of appetite, decreased sexual drive, restlessness, irritability, very talkative, scratching, hallucinations, paranoia.

If you can damage your body like that and still produce HOF numbers I say you get in quicker

  • Clayton just WOW!
That had to be a PITA to find all of that! Great Job!

I wonder how much Bagwell and Biggio both being on the same Ballot hurt them.
I’m sure some writers picked one but not the other (despite the shortsightedness of just how great of a story the induction of the pair would be).

I did however get a kick out of the fact that the bottom vote getters were all Part of the Yankees Dynasty….
Lofton was only there a year and did the majority of his HOF resume elsewhere but anything that the Yankees could claim as one of thier own in the hall not getting there is a good thing to me! LOL

    • Thanks Metsie! It was quite tedious and a good deal of math but I had been wanting to try this for the past couple years and being this was one of the more controversial I thought I’d give it a whirl.

It would be quite a story if Biggio and Bagwell make it in the same HOF class. Cooperstown would be overridden with Astros fans!

      • Well glad you did….MMO’s own Exit Poll! LOL

I am really surprised considering the press has the vote that they didn’t go for that storyline and ensure a weeks worth of easy work for themselves.

  • I saw a report about bagwell being a steroid user to the fullest. not sure whether it was true or not, but all those guys went out and cheated by using PED to help increase their already achieving talents. BIggio seemed and should be the only one who should get in, then i’d go schilling, trammell, martinez…

    • It’s always possible Alex I think thats the problem with the entire ERA of players is there is always a chance they used….
And I would even say more used than even KNOW they used at the time!

Many of the trainers were the enablers for a lot of the guys that KNEW what they were doing and I bet a lot of guys got treated by those same trainers not knowing what the hell he was using on them at the time.

  • Pete Rose should be in as a player. If they don’t want him to do any baseball functions, that would be fine.

  • As soon as a reporter/journalist retires from his craft, his voting eligibility should retire with him.

  • Excellent job, Clayton. I find this very sad because I think Piazza has the misfortune of appearing for the first time on the HOF in the same year that Bonds and Clemens also do.
Piazza has been tainted by association. The whispers and speculation on Piazza never really rose to the level of the type of evidence that exists with Clemens and Bonds. If he fails to make it this year, hopefully next year will be a different story.

And Davidoff’s ballot (and any others like it) was the worst. Absolute trash.

  • Well done Clayton. I would think Piazza would get on the first time ballot but if that’s the case of not getting in then next year in 2014.

  • Jason Stark just posted his ballot:

For the record, here are the 10 names I checked: Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mike Piazza, Craig Biggio, Curt Schilling, Sammy Sosa, Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines, Jack Morris, Dale Murphy. Now let’s talk about how I got there.

    Mike Piazza

What am I missing here? Mike Piazza was the greatest offensive catcher in baseball history. Period.

Highest OPS (.922). Best slugging percentage (.545). Most homers (427). Best adjusted OPS-plus (143). Tied with the great Yogi Berra in wins above replacement. No one even close in offensive WAR.

So what’s the reason not to vote for Piazza again? Because he couldn’t throw? Because he was a 62nd-round pick who rose to greatness? Because some people kind of think he must have done something fishy sometime, even though a Mets clubhouse guy was one of the Mitchell report’s biggest sources and never accused him?

Sorry. I’m not conspiratorial enough, I guess. But it makes no sense to have a Hall of Fame that doesn’t include the greatest-hitting catcher who ever played baseball. Not to me.

    • Great info, Gary. Thanks for sharing it. It’s mind boggling how many baseball writers don’t see it that way.

  • Rooting for Piazza the most…but it would be great to have a fellow Kings Park Kingsman in the HOF (Biggio). Seems everyone forgets that Biggio is a Long Island boy.
