Winter Meetings Update: Red Sox Land Napoli, Surgery For Arod, Dodger Want Greinke, Latest On Dickey
Jon Heyman, Ken Rosenthal, Joel Sherman and Jon Paul Morosi have all been giving updates as a reporters on MLB Network which is live at the Winter Meetings. Here is his most recent rumor mill report.
- The Boston Red Sox made the first splash of the Winter Meetings agreeing to a three-year deal worth $39 million with Mike Napoli. The deal which was first tweeted by Nick Carafado of the Boston Globe. Carafado also tweets that the plan for Napoli is to be the Sox primary first baseman, while playing occasionally behind the plate. The Red Sox have also been reported to have interest in former Yankee outfielder Nick Swisher
- According to Heyman the Dodgers will “back up the truck” for free agent starter Zack Greinke. Heyman states that the Dodgers believe there is a possibility that they could have a deal done in the next 24-48 hours. The Dodgers are in desperate need a number two starter behind ace Clayton Kershaw and ahead of number three starter Josh Beckett.
- Heyman also reports that the Angels still remain interested in Greinke, but may not be able to play hardball with the Dodgers and their loaded group of owners. As a result the Angels continue to look at the second and third best options in Kyle Lohse and Anibal Sanchez.
- According to Jon Paul Morosi Washington would like to re-sign Adam Laroche and trade Michael Morse. If they are unable to re-sign Laroche, Morse will take over at first, but if they can bring Laroche back, Morse could be dealt. Morse was linked to Tampa earlier today in a deal that could have been for James Shields according to Heyman of CBSSports.com.
- Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez has a tear in his left hip and will have surgery to repair it in January. The timetable for his recovery is 4-6 months, and as a result will miss part of the 2013 season. With Derek Jeter also on the shelf the Yankees are in the market for a middle infielder for the left side.
- ESPN’s Jayson Stark is reporting that the Baltimore Orioles are “going hard” after free agent first baseman Adam Laroche.
- Finally, Mets GM Sandy Alderson has confirmed that he has had “preliminary” trade discussions with multiple teams involving R.A. Dickey according to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com.
Keep it locked in here as we will continue to keep you updated on all the rumors flying around the Winter Meetings.

Dont worry Mets fans while the redsox and braves are signing players like upton and napoli….we might sign Cesar Izturis!!!
We went to the trash early this year smh
FYI I’d rather Cedeno back but looks like we have to downgrade from him too!
Upton would certainly have filled a need, but Napoli is coming in as a 1B/DH primarily. So that means you want to sign him to play first and trade Ike?
Where did i say i wanted either??? although i wouldve gladly taken Napoli to be our catcher he’s not great defensively but wayyyyy better than thole behind the plate and an infinitely better hitter. Upton well any major league outfielder would do….
Those teams are improving by filling their needs and they arent waiting around til all available talent is gone to do it….Theyre recognizing whom they want and targeting them….We are p-footing around with players already under contract Wright, Dickey…i dont expect Alderson to improve this team via trades or any other method
Izturis has won a gold glove.
When the team vying for an NL East title managed by Davey Johnson had a chance to get Izturis for their stretch run… Johnson said
“To have him available, it kind of must be our year,” Johnson said. “Very good defender, plays second or short and a switch-hitter – awfully good insurance. It’s like having spot starters in the bullpen. I sleep better.”
So getting him to help a kid like Tejada out doesn’t exactly sound like the worst idea ever
Wouldn’t it be nice to actually have a move that makes the team better, and not one that might be maybe possibly perhaps might make the team better??
Hank signing Izturis makes us worst read my post below

LMAO….You realize after Davey and the Nats acquired Izturis off of waivers Aug. 6th they put him back on waivers after those 5 games on Aug. 17th!!!!!!
lol….So much for that spot starter huh???
Besides he won that gold glove years ago in 2004 he hasnt been healthy in years. And we rather him over Ronny Cedeno whom is younger and much better defensively at this point in there careers. Ronny is also coming off of a very good season with us defensively as well as offensively.
Izturis played:
62 games in 2012
18 games in 2011
If the Mets wanted to sign an Izturis they shouldve signed his brother Maicer!
Bad argument Jessep, you wouldve lost this one badly if this were a courtroom. Stop defending Sandys moves just to defend him. If he makes a good move i’ll give hi credit for it…He hasnt besides the Wheeler deal since he wasnt gonna re-sign Beltran anyway…shouldve done the same with Reyes but i digress
You’re absolutely right Alderson is doing nothing to help the team. Mets need help but it doesn’t look like any is coming soon. Mets are doomed for the years to come so be ready for a few more consecutive losing seasons. Idk what Sandy is doing, but it better be good. And yes Sandy, we are “punting in ’13.” LOL Yankee fans are worried about their old team when we haven’t made the playoffs in years!!!! Give me a break! I hope I’m wrong but I’m sorry it looks like the Mets aren’t going to be relevant for awhile.
Mets won’t be adding any Upton’s or Napoli’s for the foreseeable future so expect crappy play for the foreseeable future. This franchise is so financially screwed that it’ll hold them back from contention. I hope this isn’t true but Alderson isn’t being aggressive at all. With Pagan and B.J. off the board we gotta hope for a Ross/Ludwick signing.
The Mets will be fine Sally, you’re right though we have to hope for some kind of signing or trade. I wouldn’t be upset if they brought back Hairston either.
Toronto claimed Eli Whiteside also so now they have Travis D, Buck, JP and Whiteside.
They claimed Whiteside for a reason.
To corner the market on catchers?
Usually picking up a 33 year old, beat up, .190 hitting catcher is a Sandy Alderson move. Maybe they are gonna flip him for Dickey.
more off-topic, saw this – thought it was a cool thing
A’s players, who together form one of baseball’s lowest payrolls, have voted to donate one playoff share — a total of $34,325.16 – to various charities. The donation will be split between the MLB Players Trust, UMPS CARE, Hurricane Sandy relief efforts, Oakland A’s Community Fund, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area, United Way of the Bay Area, Donnie Moore Ministries and Craig Breslow’s Strike 3 Foundation.
In a release, A’s player rep Jerry Blevins said, “During the playoff share meetings, we decided as a team that we wanted to give back to the community by donating one full share to various charities that are near and dear to our hearts.”
