You know what makes me want to punch a friggin wall?

I just saw a family member of the mother of Lanza say that she owned these guns because she was a single mom living alone and in case of protection.

That is the biggest load of you know what you'll ever hear. I am sorry but I get it. I get the own a gun to protect yourself. But to own SIX GUNS!? Including an assault rifle which just so happens to be the weapon of choice for the murderer? I mean you gotta be friggin kidding me. First of all, Newtown for those not in CT is one of the safest places to live. It's not like she was living in the mean streets of Bridgeport.

Unless she expected an army of 100 to plow through her home, what did she need those guns for?

That is my point. It's not that GUNS should be taken out of homes it's that some gun owners are excessive and this is a perfect example.

Unreal.

I grew up in Fairfield which is just south of this town. Newtown is a great little country town for people that want to have a nice calm way of life but have close access to services. Basically lost it when I picked up my seven year old at school and freaked him out. In the evening I just stared at my daughter sleeping. It's just not right what has happened to those families. This will have a ripple effect for a couple generations. It's is the kind of pain you can't just shake off, it's just not fair.

Hi Ray,

I am sure your heart is in the right place and when I used the word "misleading" please know I didn't mean for it to apply to you but rather the flaws in the information that you were going by, as pointed out by Jessup and Saturn, with both Switzerland and Georgia.

Watching CNN right now. All the children were between the ages of six and seven. One young teacher, I believe her name was Vickie Soto, got all her kids (she did not use the word "students" into the closet then put herself in the line of fire to protect them. Bottom line is that if there were no guns around to begin with, there would be no tears coming down from Heaven at this time.

This is one of the most tragic days I've ever seen. It took every ounce of strength to not go and pick up my daughter at her elementary school. I knew she was fine, but I just wanted to hug her. I live in CT also. This is unthinkable. They were just babies who won't be with their families for Christmas - these little angels. I pray that God gives strength and comfort to these families. God bless them.

I know you arent really talking about crime rates from the 1980's.

Georgia is a notorious Republican Pro Gun State. Of Course they are going to try to go to great lengths to prove that Guns Save people lives. You can get a freaking Rifle with the purchase of Jewelery For FREE!

Nevermind the countless Rifle shows, Gun ranges, Gun expositions...

Kennesaw has also a store called Wildman's

Run by a KKK idiot who has all kinds of memorabilia inside from nooses, to KKK outfits to WHITE ONLY signs.

http://www.wildmans-shop.com/

I live in Georgia. Youre failing to count that Atlanta has a pretty high murder rate in terms of major cities in the country. Guess how they murder people? WITH GUNS!!

Not sure where youre getting your facts btw.

http://www.city-data.com/crime/crime-Acworth-Georgia.html

Acworth crime index 120
Kennesaw crime index 126

We dont have mandatory gun laws yet our crime index is lower.

I am really not going to argue gun control laws here, but to try and prove that you are safer by making mandatory laws where a resident should own a gun is quite far fetched.

I will think of the 20 children who lost their lives and the 7 adults just before christmas. That is the real tragedy.

With all the tragic occurrences we've experienced coming to the point that grieving parents now have to pick out little coffins to prepare for the sudden burying of their children - some not old enough to have had their fathers teach them how to ride a two wheel bicycle - to argue about.....,

.....I'm sorry. One of the four freedoms paintings by Normal Rockwell - "Freedom From Fear" - showed parents tucking their children safely in their bed, reassuring them that no one was going to harm them. No words can describe my anger equating the need to protect gun ownership and citing misleading statistics to what most parents were feeling last night as they were tucking their children in bed trying to re-assure them of the same thing now.

saturn,

This is from the wikipedia article:

Gun rights activist David Kopel has claimed that there is evidence that this gun law has reduced the incident rate of home burglaries citing that in the first year, home burglaries dropped from 65 before the ordinance, down to 26 in 1983, and to 11 in 1984.[19] Another report observed a noticeable reduction in burglary from 1981, the year before the ordinance was passed, to 1999. Kennesaw's crime rates have continued to decline and are well below the national average, making citizens feel safer and more secure.[20] Th Later research claims that there is no evidence that [the law] reduced the rate of home burglaries [in Kennesaw],[21][22] even though the overall crime rate had decreased by more than 50% between 1982 and 2005.[23]

The city's website[24] claims the city has the lowest crime rate in the county.

50% reduction from the time the law was passed. I d say thats pretty substansial.

Ray,

I live in Georgia. Right next to Kennesaw. This law is NOT enforced, it is still in the books but it is not enforced. Also, Kennesaw has never been a crime infested area .So stating that crime dropped dramatically is not factual. Its a small town about 40 minutes from Atlanta. As a major city, that is where all the crime, robberies and shootings are concentrated in. Kennesaw is on the North side of the state, which is one of the most safest and upscales areas of metro Georgia.

I live in the town next door, Acworth, and it is not a law to own a gun, and like Kennesaw and towns nearby crimes are barely heard of. We live in peace, and I assure you it is not because people own guns.

ray that is kind of true but the men ages 20-30 undergo military training and weapons training and are technically the countries first line of defense in case of an invasion are they not? They keep their gun at home as part of their obligation to the military and country. Not because they like guns.

Everyone over the age of 18 who is not psychiatrically disabled (such as having had a history of endangering his own life or the lives of others) or identified as posing security problems, and who has a clean criminal record (requires a Criminal Records Bureau check) can request such a permit.

So it's pretty different. I guarantee you whoever owned those 6 guns was not trained to own and keep them safe like somebody in Swiss was

I agree with you jessep. There are more issues here than gun control. The most important issue is helping the families start to heal. That will be a lifetime process and they will probably never fully heal. After all, you cannot replace a precious childs lost life. But certainly the focus has to be the families affected by this. Secondly, this country has to start, in a more meaningful way, recognizing mental illness and the consequences of untreated illness. I don't know what role, if any, mental illness played in Friday's tragedy. But what else would drive a person to murder his own mother and then go on a rampage inside an elementary school and massacre innocent children?

Certainly something should be done to try to avoid such gun violence going forward. I am certainly a supporter of the 2nd amendment, but I also recognize that people with severe forms of mental illness should not have easy access to firearms. The problem is how do you identify every person with an illness that "Might" lead to such violence? And how do you identify which person will act on their impulse to kill and which one won't? I certainly don't have the answers to those questions. But I would be willing to support any law that prevents the mentally ill from owing firearms. But, again, I have to say that no matter what the law is, if someone is set on committing a crime they will find a way to circumvent human laws and commit that crime.

On the other hand, we are obligated to do all that we can to try and figure out what causes individuals to go on such murderous rampages. Also to do more to encourage those who have mental illness or those who suspect family members are suffering with it to come forward and get treatment so that perhaps we can avoid future outbursts of such violence.

But, again, today's focus should be on the victim's families and all those affected by Friday's shooting. They need all the love, support, and help that the nation and community can give them. God Bless them all.

I don’t know what role, if any, mental illness played in Friday’s tragedy.

The problem is how do you identify every person with an illness that “Might” lead to such violence? And how do you identify which person will act on their impulse to kill and which one won’t? I certainly don’t have the answers to those questions.

But, again, today’s focus should be on the victim’s families and all those affected by Friday’s shooting. They need all the love, support, and help that the nation and community can give them. God Bless them all.

I think where the country and politicians need to compromise is the 2nd amendment is flawed in that basically if I want to have a tank with loaded ammunition, technically I could make an argument that I am just protecting my freedoms. Look, the state of CT has had TWO very tragic incidents in 5 years or so. The Petit Home Invasion (which hits very close to me seeing as I work with Dr. Petit) and now this.

The home invasion triggered many people to think about owning a handgun to protect themselves. I totally get it. I do, and I respect that so long as the people who own it are properly trained not only on the uses of it but on how to talk to children about it and keep it locked away.

There's a drastic difference between owning a handgun to protect yourself and your family and owning semi automatic weapons just because you can.

If you want to collect guns, fine. Don't collect ammunition and have ammunition purchases be more documented. If this woman's house was in danger, I promise you she is not unloading assault rifles on the intruders. Why do you need semi automatic ammunition in your house? If you like shooting, then get your ammo at a range and any unused can be returned.

There's a give and take and something has to be done.

Hi Jessep,

Good words as always.

And last night there was a NRA lobbyist telling Pierce Morgan that according to the statistics gun control does nothing to prevent tragedies such as what occurred yesterday. Morgan yelled back about telling that to the dead children, their grieving families and all those who are now so scared to even send their children off to school. If one wasn't allowed to purchase guns in the first place, one with such physical disorders leading up to such madness would not have been able to get access to them.

Please know the reference to stats is purely coincidence and not meant to to infer anything about Sandy and sabermetrics - it was raised as a point of contention by that gun guy on the show and to put that into the context of our disagreements with Sandy, etc.t would be as insensitive to what happened as anyone could do.

you know the problem with instant media is you never know what is true. I can tell you that local media here is reporting family members telling them he had a form of autism.

Also what is crazy is what is breaking today. For example - his mother was NOT a staff member at the school. The superintendent's words. She may have been a sub or volunteer. Not sure yet

Also just the day before the kid went to the school and got into an argument. So there were warnings.

I am not in any way suggesting that all guns need to be gone. I am a realist. What I am saying is this clearly shows signs of issues when a woman living in a small town like Newtown, Ct has SIX guns registered in her name.

Six, not 3. Not 1 for home invasion safety. There was the semi auto glock, sig sauer, the assault rifle and then 3 more .45-caliber Henry Repeating Rifle, a .22-caliber Marlin Rifle and a .30-caliber Enfield Rifle.

That's not what the fore fathers envisioned when they wanted you to have the right to bear arms. I promise you.

My wife is a teacher at a school solely dedicated to learning disabled kids which at times brings kids with more issues than just learning. There are more issues than gun control with this story and they all need to be addressed.

If you cannot trust your 5 year old will be safe when you send them off to school then that says more about our country than any election, fiscal cliff or laws.

I certainly understand where you're coming from jessep. I have a soon to be 2 year old and news of this tragedy shook me to the core because he will be in public school in just a few years and it caused me to realize that none of us are truly safe from this kind of senseless violence. I had not heard that the shooter may have been autisitc, I had read former classmates say how super intelligent he was was, bordering on genius. But also read that he was very goth. I would say whatever his intellectual state, mental illness certainly had to have played a role in his unfathomable decision to commit mass murder.

The problem, as I see it, is that stricter gun control laws will not ensure our safety any more than it already is. If someone is truly bent on committing a heinous crime such as this, they will find the means to do it. Whether through the black market or theft they can get their hands on the weapon 'of their choice if they're so determined. Also, we need to keep in mind that the two worst cases of mass murder in US history occurred without the use of a single firearm: Oklahoma City, 1995 & Sept. 11, 2001 in New York City, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania. Not to diminish the effect of gun violence, but if someone is bent on killing they can accomplish their goal whether through legal means (proper ownership of firearms or purchasing seemingly innocuous farming chemicals) or illegal (theft, black market purchases, or hijacking fully fueled and loaded airliners). Unfortunately evil will always find a way to circumvent laws and protective measures no matter how well planned or intentioned.

I live about 35 minutes from this, grew up about 20 minutes or so.

I was glued to this from the moment it happened. It didn't help that the very first report was that the shooting actually happened in my town (which obviously it didnt)

The thing that struck me about this, is it seemed as though time stood still in Connecticut. I know it sounds odd but I swear people were driving slower on the highways and roads yesterday. People walked around with no expressions on their face. You'd think it'd be shock or sorrow but it was just emptiness.

I'm very pleased the Dickey deal should it get done was not done last night. That area of CT is actually pretty well represented with Mets fans believe it or not. So some of these families are just like you & me when it comes to sports.

It hit home having a 2 year old, I think it would have stunned me 5 years ago - but I don't think I could fully grasp how shocking it was until I had a child.

It's probably the most despicable thing I've ever heard of. These weren't children who could run and hide or understand what was going on. In some respects they were children who likely didn't even understand the magnitude of what was about to happen. That's sickening.

I hope this issue brings about actually problem solving for this country. Not only with gun laws but with how we handle mental health of all kinds in his country. If he was autistic as the reports are now saying - I can't think of 1 good reason why his mother should have owned not only 1 gun, but multiple guns.

I cannot fathom why a woman living in one of the safest towns in America would need an assault rifle and 2 more semi automatic pistols stocked with ammunition.

I am all for the right to bear arms under certain guidelines, and think the laws and processes for which you are allowed to own a gun need to be looked at more deeply.

From 1960-1990 there were 4 mass shootings or mass school shootings in the United States. Since 1990 there have been 27. Today was the 14th mass school shooting since Columbine in 1999.

If that doesn't throw up a red flag, then nothing will.
