HI CB,

Of course control is something that could be mastered with more experience but we have to wait and see if that holds true for Wheeler since it obviously is not a blanket statement.

And it's not the walk rate - it's the understanding that more experienced hitters are patient and are not going to swing and pitches off the strike zone like those he faced in lower level minor league ball. It is a problem as Adam Rubin pointed became more apparent as Zack made he jump from Double-A to Triple-A. Zack realized that too when he said:

“They don’t swing at side-to-side pitches. They’ll swing more at up-to-down,” Wheeler said about the higher level. “The strike zone is a little tighter. Guys wait on their pitch more. If you can’t get over your offspeed pitches for strikes, they’re just going to sit on your fastball, and they can hit that. You’ve got to be able to get your offspeed over for strikes and I think you’ll be successful.”

Control is something that can be learned with experience and age. especially when you're at such an advanced level for your age. Most 22 year olds were pitching in their senior year of college this year. Zack was mowing down AA-AAA professional hitters. AAA hitters hit .197 against him.

I remember a young man by the name of Clayton Kershaw who walked the world in his first stint in full season pro ball. Then had walk rates of 4.35 and 4.79 his first two seasons in the majors.

And now....well, I don't have to tell you how the rest goes.

Understanding that Wheeler and what he will be remains to be seen the knock on him is his control but like you pointed out BBLB his control is not that much different then say that of Matt Harvey.

Wheeler since joining the Mets for A+ through AAA has pitched 176.0/IP and has given up 64/BB that is a 3.27 BB/9.

Wheeler in AA last year posed a 3.3 BB/9 over 116.0/IP. Harvey posed a 3.5 BB/9 over 59.2/IP.

Wheeler over his 1st 6 games in AAA posed a 4.4 BB/9 over 33.0/IP. Harvey over his 1st 6 games posed a 3.9 BB/9 over 30.0/IP.

There is a portion of fans that will hold Wheeler to a much higher standard due to who traded for him and the player he was traded for and that is just the way it is going to be but whatever Wheeler will be or not be will happen irregardless of what concerns some may have at this time so as with all Met prospects the hope is he along with the entire farm system prove to be as great a Mets prospect as possible.

Does ANYONE even LISTEN to what Collins says anymore....

If anything he has proved that anything he says can be changed on a minute to minute basis...

-Cant recall how many times he said he'd let the young kids play regularly at the end of the season to see what they are only to see Torres and Hairston....

-Or how Ike and Duda would be in the lineup to face lefty pitching down the stretch only to see Hairston and Torres instead...

-Or how about when he said he would stop fidgeting with the lineup to give hitters a clearer role....nope didnt do that either

Too many more instances to mention he is a blowhard....He is a yes man to Sandy I tend to think teams where the manager and GM dont always agree on everything are more successful....

Collins is a terrible field manager and in game strategist. Whenever he has a mic in front of him he just rambles and rambles but never says anything meaningful. I wouldn't put any credence in anything he says in December about what will happen in February. Do you ever see or read about any other managers doing this? Why does he always go to these Winter Meetings for anyway? What's his role there?
