Phillies Closing In On Cody Ross

cody ross red soxIf the Mets were serious about their interest in free agent outfielder Cody Ross, this may not be want they want to hear.

The Philadelphia Phillies have gotten more intense in their pursuit of free-agent outfielder Cody Ross, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Rosenthal adds that other teams have also stepped it up for Ross including the Mariners, Braves and Red Sox.

Ross, 32, batted .267/.326/.481 with 22 home runs in 528 plate appearances for the Red Sox in 2012.

The Mets were interested in Ross as the potential right-handed hitting outfielder with power that the team addressed as one of their offseason goals.

  • He’ll do well there in that bandbox, but his numbers outside of extreme hitter’s parks made the Mets pursuit look foolish.

    • The pursuit of any power hitter by the Mets is likely foolish.

      • No, there’s no moratorium on power hitters, just those who’s power exists only in the confines of little league parks.

        • “but his numbers outside of extreme hitter’s parks made the Mets pursuit look foolish.”

          You are aware that he put up his BEST POWER NUMBERS in a park with almost the EXACT SAME DIMENSIONS as Citi Field???

          When he played for the Florida Marlins in Sun Life Stadium???

          ***Sun Life Stadium (dimensions):

          Left field – 330 ft / 100.6 m
          Left-center field – 361 ft / 110 m
          Center field – 404 ft / 123.1 m
          Right-center field – 385 ft / 117,3 m
          Right field – 345 ft / 105.1 m
          Backstop – 58 ft / 17.7 m
          ““““““““““““““““““““““““““

          ***Citi Field (Dimensions):

          Left field 335 feet (102 m)
          Left center 358 feet (109 m)
          Deep left center 385 feet (117 m)
          Center field 408 feet (124 m)
          Deep right center 390 feet (121 m)
          Right center 375 feet (114 m)
          Right field 330 feet (100 m)

          So you stand corrected sir….

          • LoL at you telling me I stand corrected. I assume you mean his 22 home runs in 2008 and 24 in 2009?

            2008 – second lowest home run park factor in the NL, Ross hit seven home runs at home and fifteen on the road.

            2009 – second HIGHEST home run park factor in the NL Ross hit 13 home runs at home and 11 on the road.

            So sure, when it’s a hitter’s park, he can barely hit home runs at home. A pitcher’s park? Not so much?

            LoL at you telling me I stand corrected….

            • Should have said “So sure, when it’s a hitter’s park, he can hit half his home runs at home. A pitcher’s park? Not so much?”

              Still, LoL…….

            • Homerun park factors??? That is a joke of a stat….

              You are aware that according to your Homerun park factor stat that in 2012— Citi Field was ranked right there with Fenway and Citizen Bank Park???

              10th Fenway (Boston)10th with 1.088
              11th Citizens Bank Park (Philly) with 1.087
              12th The Citi Field (Mets) with a 1.069

              So does that make Citi Field a little league hitters park as well???

              Its another stupid stat so back to the drawing board….

              Youre argument was that he cant hit for power in big parks. But majority of his career was spent playing in fairly big parks Fenway was the only park considered a homerun park that Ross has played his home games. And he only played in Fenway for ONE YEAR!

              You’re basically saying to disregard everywhere else he has played because of this.

              Sooooooo you still stand corrected… LOL@yourself

              • Oooops almost forgot the concrete evidence of Homerun park factors lol….enjoy

                http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor/_/sort/HRFactor

              • Right. Stupid stat because it completely drains your argument. It’s right there for you to see. You can ignore it, but burying your head in the sand doesn’t change hte fact that Ross’s biggest power years came in hitter friendly parks. Citi Field is not a hitter friendly park.

                • Florida’s park was ranked 3rd to last in 2008…when Cody had some good numbers for Florida..

                  so no…BadBoyLeroyBrown was still right…you are still wrong

                  http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor/_/year/2008/sort/HRFactor

                  • LOL….

                    He is clueless Just-Da-Damaja

                    Even though he is FLAT OUT WRONG he will proclaim himself right even though I used his own stat to debunk his argument….And gave proof I even gave him something to reference…but he will go look up some other bogus fangraph stat that closely fit his agenda.

                    He’s one of those posters who just wants the last word…lol

                  • No, I was right. Let the adults talk. Florida was a pitcher’s park in 2008 and Ross hit………seven home runs at home. Fifteen on the road.

                    Ross = no power in big parks
                    JDD = no business in a baseball discussion.

                    • You dont make any sense……..You state Florida was a hitters park in 2008, yet the dimensions are the same as Citi Field which you stated is NOT a hitters park…

                      You cant blame the thin air because Florida is a HUMID climate its harder to hit homers in humidity….which is why in Colorado they use a Humidor to store the baseballs…

                      Here is an article stating the facts that Sun Life Stadium WAS a PITCHERS PARK!!!
                      http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/sports/baseball/miami-marlins-executives-hope-new-stadium-will-be-/nL2SR/

                      You my friend either have a mental disability or you have a issue admiting youre WRONG!!!! I think its a little of both

                    • You’re really grasping at straws. It’s getting embarrassing. I’m embarrassed for you. I know it was a pitchers park in 2008. That’s what I told YOU.

                      “2008 – second lowest home run park factor in the NL, Ross hit seven home runs at home and fifteen on the road.”

                      That was two and a half hours ago. How long does it take you to grasp a simple point? How much longer will this go on? He played in a pitcher’s park and hit less than a third of his home runs there.

                      You have fun with that.

                • Lol….Do you even know how to read and comprehend??? SMH

                  If one was to read my argument and yours they would see that you are the one with your head buried not in sand though…head buried in your A_ _.

  • Would be nice if Sandy could do two things at once and get in this deal. If they are truly interested in him (I would probably say mild interest at best) it would behoove them to step up. Just seems like it’s always one thing at a time with this group. Ross would be a nice addition to add with these prospects. If the trade goes the way that is rumored, the OF will still be a black hole.

    • Shocking! lol……I agree with everything youve just said

      Doesnt seem to be a lot of multi-tasking going on in Mets Land in a while….Ross would be a nice add whether this trade goes through or not…And his versatility in the OF would be a plus plus for us….Not to mention he’s an actual proven major leaguer….some much needed stability and vet leadership in the OF wouldnt hurt.

  • if gose is not in the trade. I hope at least another outfielder is ?

    • Hopefully Moises Sierra

  • Another band aid that Met fans are screaming for. Amazing how people can actually stoop to this level. The hell with Ross. He is not an answer. Go with the three amigos plus Den Dekker later in the year and see what you have. After that, go after one of the big FA OFs next year who can actually make a difference.

    • Thank god you dont make decisions in Queens

      • Nor you…we saw enough of the stupid signings in the FA market with Omar. It is a good thing senseless decisions that you subscribe to with the “spend just to spend” is removed and there are knowing adults in charge.

        I know it is not going to happen but I hold out hope that some of your ilk learn how a successful baseball organization is actually constructed. Of course, to do that would require the learning of a little baseball history. But there is always a chance.

        • Lol…..you do realize you just contradicted yourself???

          then you go on to say…..

          “we saw enough of the stupid signings in the FA market with Omar. It is a good thing senseless decisions that you subscribe to with the “spend just to spend” is removed and there are knowing adults in charge.—taskmaster4450″
          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
          So you want to gamble with an Outfield full of unproven talent the 3 amigos (I assume is Duda,Kirk,Baxter) All unproven players whom happen to be Lefty bats whom strugle vs LHP…something the Mets struggled with last year….and on top of that you want to add Den Dekker to the bunch another unproven Lefty bat whom struggles vs LHP…not to mention he couldnt hit a LICK in Triple A….Struck out 90times in 295 AB’s in AAA?!?!?
          With that said I strongly recommend you take your own advice above….which is…..
          “I know it is not going to happen but I hold out hope that some of your ilk learn how a successful baseball organization is actually constructed. Of course, to do that would require the learning of a little baseball history. But there is always a chance.”
          PLEASE LEARN my friend ;)
  • If its not obvious by the trade Sandy is negotiating, the Mets are not in a win in 2013 mode.
    They seem to be looking ahead towards ’14 at the moment.
    Also, saying that he can’t do two things at once… Come on! There are like two or three other ex Gm’s in that front office, if they wanted Cody Ross, they’d be able to make a phone call.
    Honestly, the comments here are getting so idiotic I’m growing wary of this place. Open your eyes it’s not that hard to see what the agenda is at the moment!
  • I gotta tell ya….and I have been bashing Sandy. If he can get D’Arnaud, Syndergaard and an outfielder for Dickey, Thole and say Flores I am more than fine playing for beyond 2013. We will have a franchise catcher to go with Harvey, Wheeler, Niese, Syndergaard, Tejada, Wright and Davis. Sign me up.
    Like I said, hopefully we can add Sierra as well and put his righty power bat behind Ike and his howitzer arm in RF.
  • Philly can have Ross. I hope they pay him a ton for 2, 3, heck, 7 years.
    • Ditto. Not that I really want either one, but if Ross and Hairston are the 2 options, I would prefer Hairston for fewer years, and enough money left over to get another “real” player.
  • If the Mets trade Dickey, signing Ross, especially to a 3-year-deal as he’s looking for makes extremely little sense.
    2013 will be about getting young players established at the Major League level. So, might as well give 500 AB each to Valdespin, Nieuwenhuis and Duda to find out what they are and not platoon them vs LHP.
    BTW, if Deal happens as rumored, Mets balance the lineup a bit more with a RHH C…
  • There are two places any self respecting major league outfielder should not want to play in. One is Marlins Stadium. The other is Citi Field. It has nothing to do with the ballparks. It has to do with the owners. Worst owner in baseball??? Jeffrey Loria. The second worst? Fred Wilpon.
