Well if the team took what the saved on Reyes and re-invested it into other players, then the people crying no money would of been wrong but they didn’t. What makes you think the Wilpon’s would take the money saved on Wright and re-invest it somewhere else?

The way Bayonne is using the math doesn’t really make sense for his argument. Yes the total dollars are less but the current year dollars are substantially more. Next year Upton will make 12.45m, Madson at 3.25 and Napoli at 13m for a total of 28.250. That is a big chunk of money put to 3 players for one given season. Especially for a lazy outfielder, a good relieve that hasn’t pitched in over a year and a average first basemen.

Madson at 3.25 is a risk worth taking but those 3 at 28.25 compared to Wright at 16, I would take Wright.

Upton, Napoli, & Madson are a better off season so far than Wright. Absolutely and with still about 20 million to spend and not counting trades and what Wright could have possibly netted.

No doubt those 3 make the Mets better than spending the money on Wright.

Especially since 2012 was his best overall offensive year since 2008? If he was regressing so dramatically wouldn’t he have hit worse in 2012 than say 2010 and 2011?

No you wouldn’t your Wright hate is blinding you. You hate Upton for the same reason’s I do and we are very much on the same page about that guy. Madson didn’t pitch one inning last year and 40m for 3 years of a average first basemen is not good, you know it.

That’s why Napoli’s deal is not good. If he was physically able to stay at catcher with those numbers, the contract is fine but if he’s only going to play 50 games behind the plate, that is a expensive average first baseman.

Your problem is you expect the money to be used somewhere else besides on him. What evidence do you have to think this? Not that I have evidence to suggest otherwise I just have a hard time believing they would even use half of that somewhere else. This was more of a big picture long term contract, then an deal where they want to demonstrate that the have started re-investing into the team.

a closer coming off a season long injury
an outfielder with a .242 batting average over the last 4 years who has never reached his potential
a catcher who’s best position is 1B or DH

I don’t think that example accomplished what you hoped when you first typed it.

they are on record as having a tight budget this year (same as last year) with not much to spend new. And from the reports, Wright may have taken less in 2013 than his option, but even if not, that is 16mill for 2013.

Those other guys, being on shorter deals, are at about 33mill for next year. Money that would have to come from somewhere.

Off topic but Red Sox signed Napoli for 3 years 39 million.

So the tally so far is Upton 75 million, Ryan Madson 6 million, and a top catcher for 39 mill = 120 million so far.

An outfield and catching spot, 2 of the Mets most pressing needs and well affordable

Not saying these are the 3 exact guys Mets could have signed just pointing out what 138 million can buy..instead of Wright. Can’t wait to see more signings and see how many more creative ways that money could have been used to make a better team now.

Losing Pelfrey especially to division foe will be big mistake. Mark my words he’s going to pitch well if he sticks to the windup he used this past season. It’s a difference maker and how well he pitched before the injury is strong indicator.
