Outfielder Shin-Soo Choo Heading To Reds

The Reds and Indians are deep in talks that would send Shin-Soo Choo to Cincinnati, according to Danny Knobler of CBS Sports.

The Indians would receive center fielder Drew Stubbs and shortstop Didi Gregorius in return. The Reds are expected to receive another player in addition to Choo.

The Reds plan to use Choo in center field and as their leadoff man. Choo has played just 10 games in center field for the Indians, none since 2009. But the Reds believe that whatever they lost defensively would be made up for with Choo’s offensive contributions.

Choo had a .373 on-base percentage and an .815 OPS last year for the Indians. He led off 98 times, and had a .389 on-base percentage in those games.

The Indians are anxious to move Choo because he has just one year to go before free agency and is represented by Scott Boras.

When the hot stove season began, I thought Choo would have been a nice fit for the Mets.

  • Of course. We’re just sitting around doing nothing while the NL grows stronger before our eyes.

  • We don’t anyone even close to drew Stubbs to trade how the heck were we going get choo?

    • Idk….. a Mets Christmas Miracle???

    • You mean Baxter doesnt cut it?

    • We don’t have anyone close to Stubbs? Really?

You realize he hit .213 last year and is a strikeout machine? Not to mention, he had a horrific .277 OBP, which is the holy grail of baseball stats according to you. :)

Seriously though, if he was a Met, our fanbase would have ran him out of town a long time ago.

Gregorius is a nice prospect, but he’s far from a superstar prospect. The Reds will also get another player back. So, the Mets could have no doubt made a competitive offer to Cleveland.

For whatever reason, the Mets just have an aversion to making moves that will improve the major league team.

  • At some point we to come to realize that if we want a good free agent it cost money oops don’t have that and if you want to trade for a talented player you have to give up talent oops we don’t have that either.

  • The Mets are “not happy” that R.A. Dickey expressed disappointment about contract negotiations at a holiday function, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

Well Mets fans arent happy with the Mets

    • Good for Dickey speak out the Mets do it ALL the time leaking reports to the media trashing there own players to lower there value…or to lessen backlash from Mets fans when they fail to sign them

      • BINGO !!!!

Im sure RA Dickey isnt happy they are constantly leaking out the details of their contract negotiations and trade partners

    • Andrew Marchand ‏@AndrewMarchand

@NYPost_Mets Maybe they should get in the holiday spirit and pay him what he is worth.

      • AGREED!!!!

Sandy Alderson is the Grinch that stole Mets-mas….The Wilpons must love him he is there teflon vest because he takes all the bullets even thought they all have the same mindset…..

        Cheap, Cheap, Cheap…..

  • The Jets resigned Braylon Edwards…

    This makes me happy.

I mean, it’s better than anything going on with the Mets currently.

    • Oof, you must be really confused if you think the Jets are doing anything right.

      • Jets suck but theyre doing more than the Mess!

        • Ya, I wish the Mets could go out and make a big Tim Tebow-like deal.

      • I never thought I’d say thank god for the Knicks as many times as I have these past few months.

  • I am going LOL when the Phillies sign Cody rossi And the Mets resign Torres .

    • Torres??? No, way…..Aim lower Torres price tag is too high….

Think more along the lines of a Willie Harris reunion

  • Apparently the trade might be even bigger than that…..

  • I bet Sandy goes back to the commisioners office by next year. He was doing a favor to Selig to ruin I mean run our team. I believe that he has been lied to by the Wilpons. Last year he said we’d be between 100 To 110 million only off by 7 to 17 million. This year Jeff brags that the Mets have more money to spend & Sandy gets pissed when asked where is the money.

He will not be here much longer & the excuse will be that the commisioner’s office needed him more.

    • Well, some people speculate that the only reason Sandy is here is to clean up Minaya’s mess. So that basically says he’s not here to build a winner or do anything with our payroll.

      • Hi Sally,

If in terms of a mess you mean the cost of the payroll, then that was the least of the Wilpon’s problems. Teams can gradually reduce payroll by smart moves and signings.

Otherwise, I think other general managers would have loved to take over a team that had a 40 man roster that included Beltran, Pagan, Reyes, Wright, Davis, Murphy, KRod, Neise, Gee, Parnell, Murphy, Turner, Takahashi, Duda, not to mention those still down on the farm like Harvey, Familia, Mejia and others.

We should feel sorry for the next general manager who has to take over the mess left by Sandy – unless that happens to be either DePodesta or Riccardi. In that case, they are getting what they deserve! :)

        • So, you would feel sorry for a GM who takes over basically the same roster minus 3 guys, 2 of whom were not going to be here this year anyway? And an improved farm system?

          Is that what you mean?

          • HI Donal,

What I mean is take a look at the personnal Sandy had going for him when he came and board and what we have now. And he could have attempted to re-sign Beltran, Reyes and negotiate an extesnion with Pagan if he wanted to. And if it was all about money and nothing more, re-siging with a big market team playing in New York usually does the trick.

            • “Sandy had going for him when he came and board and what we have now.”

Which is the same thing minus Reyes

              1) Beltran was leaving. And after the way he was treated during his tenure here, I don’t blame him. the fact we got back such a talent for him is a big deal.

              2) Pagan was being run out of town on a rail. Why do you choose to ignore the numerous rants, from people you are now buddy buddy with, about how terrible it is we have Pagan out there everyday? For all we know, Pagan was that legendary “change of scenery” case. And at the time, the trade was a good one. It just didn’t pan out for the Mets.

              3) Reyes wanted $100 million and jumped at the only team that would give it to him. The problem with trading him in 2011 is that he still had questions about his health, was injured at the trade deadline, and was clearly intent on hitting the free agent market. And, maybe the Mets really did think they could resign him. Could they have handled the situation better? Probably, but not much.

              • Ok, let me reverse that:
                1) the fact we got back such a talent for him is a big deal”

Remains to be seen if all that “Talent” transalte to being a major leaguer.. Remember, Beltran was the most prolific hitter at the time, and the Giants gave up wheeler for him, speak about how highly they really were on him that they traded him for a rental…

2)And at the time, the trade was a good one. It just didn’t pan out for the Mets”

Don’t remember many people who went goo goo ga ga over that trade.. Only you and the idiot who wrote the whole “He had a good day” Article were happy aboout that..

                3) Reyes wanted $100 million and jumped at the only team that would give it to him”

Ok, we can say the same about wright and his comment about wanting to win.. Every player is the same, no need to take a shot at him for that. You think wright gave 2 fu*** about winning once that deal was in his face? Don’t be naive, you’re not that stupid.

                • Hi Donal,

Beltran expressed his desire to wanting to remain a Met even up to a day or so before the trade. And there is no evidence to support the claim that Carlos had not mended things with the ownership and the fans – in fact, Carlos had nothing but good words about the organization at the same time. So I wont be wrongly accused once again of making up stories, attached is an article from July 16 in which Carlos expressed both such sentiments:

                  http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/6773844/new-york-mets-carlos-beltran-want-finish-my-career-here

He was also a team player who accepted being shifted to right without a complaint. He risked re-injuring his knee in 2010 in late August to send a message to the Phillies about taking out rookie Ruben Tejada.

                  http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/10811/beltran-happy-despite-whiff

So to infer that him going to walk was an automatic contradicts everything he said (and I would not put Carlos in the same class as Sandy Anderson when it comes to sincerity) and is simply an assumption based on no substantial evidence.

Sandy conducted negotiations the proper way with Wright – trying to work out a contract extension prior to his walk year. With Jose, he admits doing nothing more than telling him to shop around and get back to him. So again, to assume Jose leaving was an automatic is again based on nothing other than assumption with no substantiated evidence.

Yes, Angel was not the brightest of players and that didn’t help him any with players and coaches unaware when he began suffering with colitis and thus started sulking in the clubhouse as well – and I am speaking from personal experience as to how bad that can be both physically and emotionally. Another part of the problem was Angel being uncomfortable being placed in the unfamiliar position as a lead-off hitter.

Also, Pagan was not eligible for free agency until after this season so the Mets had the upper hand at least through 2012 and it was the front office that wanted him out and felt his loss would be compensated with their improved bullpen. Would Angel and the Mets have wanted to stay partners with each other after his contract expired and a year to settle out bad feelings shared by both parties – nobody knows. But it cannot be taken for granted that he would not have remained if the Mets wanted him back.

After the signing of Rauch, Francisco and the trade for Rameriz (with Torres) one Met player texted to ESPN”Wow! This is no joke. This bullpen is coming together nice now.”

And people say Angel is dumb? :)

                  Attached is an article

                  http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/7325546/2011-winter-meetings-angel-pagan-san-francisco-giants-new-york-mets-moves

                  Please

                  • If Beltran wanted to stay he would’ve never waived his no trade clause. He would’ve said I’m not waiving it now lets try and negotiate a deal cause I want to remain a Met. Just because he said he wanted to stay doesn’t mean that’s what he rally wanted. What do you think he’s going to say I don’t want to be here, get me outta here? Please. Met fans were hard enough on the guy. They would’ve hated him even more.

Oh and nobody ever wrongly accused you of lying. You actually made up stories about Aldersons early years in Oakland among other things and then lied about many people agreeing with you when it was only one person that agreed with you. You not only lie you exaggerate.

                    • Hi Fonzie,

So Beltran was giving us BS because he waived his no trade clause?

As far as the rest, you never responded to the question I posed to you a few weeks back – why are you the only one saying things like:

“You actually made up stories about Aldersons early years in Oakland among other things and then lied about many people agreeing with you when it was only one person that agreed with you. You not only lie you exaggerate.”

Many disagree with me and have really rebutted roughly to back up their alternate point of views but nobody – nobody except you – calls me a liar.

That is why you are the Lone Ranger.

  • Oh please lets sign the likes of Ross, Ludwick, or trade for Choo when next year the likes of Hart, Pence, Ellsbury, Prado, and Morse are destined to be free agents.

    • Hi Taskmaster,

Some of us wouldn’t mind having Soo Choo just to bring back the good old days when we had ourselves a Choo Choo. Wonder if Sin-Choo would call Ralph Kiner “bub”?

  • Reds get Choo.
    Tribe gets Bauer.
    Mets miss the boat….as usual.

    • Was tepid on Choo, but he would have been an improvement. I was all in on Bauer though.

    • We have pitching prospects. And Bauer’s velocity has taken a noticeable dip.

And Choo is another left handed hitter with no pop.

Jeez, cry over BJ Upton, not this guy.

      • Choo with no pop? What are you smoking?

        • Well, not enough pop. Remember, we are really deficient in power. I don’t want a guy who is a matured version of Murphy or Kirk. Especially with his health issues.

Maybe if he weren’t another lefty, I’d be more open about him.

        • Well a .424 SLG % the last 2 years certainly isn’t what we would consider a power hitting corner OF.

          • By the way Murphy’s is at .421.

  • Hey Lerner, I’ve noticed that when you post something, you no longer inject your usual and customary Sandy Alderson pat on the back. Trouble in paradise? LMAO

  • Hey, where were all the sources breaking the scoop this was a 3 team deal?

We’ll call this half a miss.

  • Off Topic but I was remembering the 1st MMO “Amazin’ Hypotheticals” post and how creative it was about a trade involving Justin Upton and the resulting discussion it inspired.
Maybe with this trade there should be another Amazin’ Hypotheticals post. Something where the key players revolve around New York sending R.A. Dickey to Texas and say Ruben Tejada to Arizona with Texas sending Mike Olt to Arizona and Arizona sending Justin Upton and Didi Gregorius to New York since the Mets now have the added payroll flexibility.

    • Nope… While it’s a great idea, with this GM all we’ve been starting is some sort of fight. not worth anyone’s time. It’s a really depressing state in which of fans of this team are in.. And trust me, i’ve seen bad times.

      • Come on it’s the holidays work with me here. ;-)

25 yr old right-fielder locked up for the next 3 years. Hitting doubles in the gaps of Citi Field as he stretches some of them into triples. Playing with childhood bud Wright. Bringing his glove to RF while Capt Kirk mans CF with his glove and Duda plays LF.

Here I’ll even throw in some highlight videos of that kid Didi playing SS and just think of him doing that while robbing Bryce Harper of a base hit.

        http://www.milb.com/multimedia/vpp.jsp?content_id=22645783&sid=milb

Come on, I know you starting to feel it. You want to see this happen admit it. LoL :-D

    • I know I keep saying this but I don’t want Justin Upton. He’s terrible outside of Arizona.
