The press has a tough job. But the subtext of the Post column reads: “Dickey belonged to The Local Press alone, since we built him up; but now that he has all this extra coverage and exposure (SI, Jon Stewart, M&Ms, etc.), he needs Us Local Press less; therefore, I shall shame him for it.” The column reads like a bitter letter from a jilted girlfriend from your old small hometown after you moved to NYC and discovered models. I don’t think that’s the reality of the situation, but that’s how I read the column.

For what it’s worth, I think Dickey deserves every bit of exposure (national or otherwise), and every dollar he can garner. He’s the Cy Young award winner, he’s a humanitarian, and he is (and should continue to be) a great ambassador for both the New York Mets and Major League Baseball. It’s a shame those things are valued poorly. Sadly, things like being a humanitarian are valued poorly in society as well. Perhaps that’s why it was shocking that Dickey made his comments when he did (his only real misstep, and a small one at that). But to me, that’s too much of the pot calling the kettle black.

Your reference to Mother Theresa reminded me of the anger I felt when proctoring an “Ethics In Business” class when during a video presentation a Wall Street executive said they were doing more good than Mother Theresa (the argument being the one we always hear about personal wealth accumulation being for the better good of the whole).

Of course, it’s comparing apples to oranges but that’s the same self-sainthood we are being fed by the New York Mets organization and though there might indeed be no such attempt at an organized smear campaign conspiracy (as some of us have theorized), what is being said by them is still representative of that same indignant attitude nevertheless.
