Mike Nickeas Included In Dickey Deal

According to Jon Heyman via twitter, Mets catcher Mike Nickeas will be the third player included in the deal that will send R.A. Dickey and Josh Thole to Toronto that recently became official with Dickey’s passing his physical.
The Mets will receive 18-year old outfielder Wuilmer Becerra as the fourth player involved in the deal. Heyman describes Becerra as “a prospect but aways away and nowhere near the level of the other 2 prospects the Mets got.” Becerra joins top prospect catcher Travis d’Arnaud, hurler Noah Syndergaard and veteran backstop John Buck.
Looks like an offical announcement should come later tonight.

Wulmer Becerra is 6’4″ & 190 lbs, turns 19 next October, and from Venezuela.; 32 AB’s…who the heck is he? i’m guessing one of our International guys said he was at least ‘decent’.

Incredible what the Mets have received, but yes, we even gave up liabilities / lame ducks on top of that.

This deal teumps the Wheeler deal by sooo much. Even the 18 yr old kid looks good. 6’4 outfielder, that might be a great get in 3/4 yrs.
Dickey was a wonderful player, pitcher, leader, story, And finally…the key to what’s hopefully future sustained success. I’ll always be great full and look forward to seeing him as he continues his journey.
I honestly believe this deal is a sweetheart move and Sandy has truly earned his salary. When I think about the Shields trade and what the Rays gave up, I feel like the Royals made out pretty well now. The Mets just gave up one great player and their two bad catchers. DArnaud’s floor trumps their best days you’d have to think.
Then to think they received this great pitcher along with Buck, plus this outfielder…!? Wow, what a deal. I can’t imagine anyone being upset with this deal.
Why was keeping Nickeaus’ name out if the papers so important? Maybe to prevent a perception that Toronto was getting fleeced?
1. This trade is awesome.
2. The only complaint is that we should have moved Wright as well and added to young upside prospects, and to free up the future monies due to him for present upgrades (veteran starter or two starting MLB OFers) or for future financial flexibility.
Hank I’ll say to you what I said to somebody less level headed than you today.
The Mets got prospects back because Dickey was willing to sign with the new team because he’s a 38 year old journeyman who is looking to end his career with guaranteed money.
Why in the world would David Wright sign with anybody the Mets dealt him to before testing the market? Would you?
If you’re a 30 year old 3B and: Atlanta, Philly, Cincy, Angels, maybe Yankees, White Sox all need a 3B – why would you not test the market? It literally makes no sense. So if he was traded to say KC for Wil Myers with Dillon Gee (just throwing a random hypo out there) why would he sign with them? And if he wouldn;t, why would a team give up top prospects?
The Jays gave up what they did because they knew they could have Dickey for 3 years. Not for 1.
Wright and Dickey are at different points in their career. Wright would be leaving his homegrown team – why not test the market when several win now teams may need you?
That’s why they couldn’t net top prospects for Wright.
I hear you, but if we’re honest, we’re all only guesstimating here. So in my view…
Don’t under estimate the power of financial security. If a team like the Red Sox or Angels had traded for Wright and pledged a market value contract, I don’t think he turns it down. One, those teams are showing and have shown an ability to build winning teams, two, those teams are arguably closer to contending, and three, he has had injury problems and some would say is beginning to decline…even still, if he were to slump in 2013, it would dwarf what he could get at this point. Financial security matters.
Right but it’s different. Wright could have a down year and get himself a contract on the open market. The more teams in need, the more chances somebody signs him. Financial security for a journeyman 38 year old pitcher is true – financial security for a 30 year old 6 time all star is totally different. They were different situations and I’d rather not focus on what could have happened. We’ll never know if the Mets reached out to teams about Wright even to test the waters – so even discussing it is a moot point
Alderson never took stock of what Wrights value was on the trade market. What does that tell you? Here is a guy who is methodical about everything? Yet he is going to enter into negotiations with Wright without checking the market first. That is totally out of character.
The reason this happened is that the Wilpons werent about to let Wright go. They decided the checkbook was open for him. Alderson had no choice but to play along. Fred and Jeff saw empty seats at Citi from Day 1 if Wright was gone. That is too much for them to bear.
Wright was resigned the day Jeff uttered Wright was the replacement for Seaver as Met ambassador.
The people who get upset are the ones that say, it was about money, they could not afford Dickey, and mainly, what about 2013. They do not realize to build something strong that lasts you got to build from the ground up and need patience. Alderson is doing that and when it comes time to win they will be winning for a long long time.
And they still have a shot at the second wild card in my view with 3 or 4 good low budget moves. They have some money to blow on some one year deals, and can still make another trade or two so before selling off 2013 in December lets wait to see what the roster looks like.
For those Sandy Alderson nay-sayers in my opinion his record is 3-0.
Win 1: Beltran for Wheeler
Win 2: Not resigning Reyes..I’m sorry but Reyes’ injuries, inconsistancy and immatury while the Mets finances were in a pretzel was a smart move
Win 3: Shipping off our 38 year old (for the most part one year wonder) for the future including the top catching prospect in the game who’s hero was Mike Piazza.
Now I will add that I think the Mets could have netted back Raj Davis in the deal because it makes sense for him to be on the Mets, but otherwise we totally came out winners in this one.
Now line the outlfield and sign another low end pitcher for added depth.
How can you say any of those are “wins” already? I’m not saying they can’t be in the future, but your jumping the gun here if you think they are “wins” this soon.
1. Wheeler is a great prospect, but even great prospects bust a lot of the time. It’s more likely that he becomes a complete bust than becoming a #1 or #2 starter. I know that sounds very pessimistic, but that’s just the way it is with all prospects. The jury is still out on him because he pitched in the majors yet, and we all have no idea how he will pitch once he gets here.
2. Couldn’t the Mets have traded Reyes for prospects like they just did with Dickey instead of getting two picks in return? Also, we don’t for sure how know how he’ll play for the rest of his contract, so again, the jury is still out on him too.
3. Dickey is not a one year wonder. He was one of the top pitchers in baseball for the past THREE years. I believe he’s top 5 in the league in ERA during his time with the Mets. Age does not effect a knuckleballer the same way as it effects a conventional pitcher, so the concerns over his age are overblown.
And like I said about Wheeler, d’Arnaud hasn’t played one game in the majors yet. So, we can’t call it a “win” because we have no idea how he’ll perform once he gets up here. I hope he can become like a Matt Wieters or something like that, but realistically, there’ almost as much of a chance that he becomes the next Jeff Clement.
The Mets got a nice return for Dickey, but it won’t be years until we know if the Mets “won” or not. If these prospects don’t live up to the hype(which is a very real possibility ), then it’s not going to be a win for this organization.

Whew…..I am glad to see that someone else thinks very much like I do about the major moves that Sandy A has made so far, It is obvious that he might have done a bit better if he had been able to trade Reyes for prospects but the main thing was not to risk resigning him to a big long term deal because of the injury history!
I wish that more fans on this site would accept the fact that there has been no money to speak of to really delve into the FA market these past few years. Sandy has whittled down the payroll to greatly reduce the losses that the team had incurred since the sh*t hit the fan a few years ago. The team will be able to once again start spending money now that they have saved upwards of 25 million on trading Dickey. I truly believe that we will once again be a relevant team by 2014
And this is why you don’t declare the off season a failure in mid December.

Why they took Nickeas has got to be somehow related to catching Dickey too. I remember seeing Mike and RA next to each other constantly in the dugout on Dickey’s off-days. So maybe it’s surrounding him with familiarities?

So far this year we lose, Pelfrey, Nickeas, Thole, Torres, Acosta and Bay. Alderson was right. SIGNIFICANT CHANGES.
