Strawberry and Gooden – and drugs. Back to back rookies of the year. We should have won a few more titles.

I was at Shea on July 4th, 1986. Pitching matchup Dwight Gooden for the Mets Nolan Ryan for the Astros. Mets won that day 2-1. Boy those were the glory days to be a metsfan!! Gooden only struck out 4 that day while he picked up his 120th win. Met RBIs from keith and nails.

Great article and you invoked some great and bittersweet memories. I’m glad that Gooden has been able to exorcise his demons so that he can look back at what was and what could have been. It was an exciting time to be a Met fan when he came up that rookie year and then won the Cy a year later. I get chills still thinking of it. We haven’t had a debut like that ever since.

Well, we were on our way to having our own Bob Gibson….Doc just screwed up. I read his latest book and he doesn’t make many excuses for that path he ultimately choose. He realizes at one time he had it all and turned away from it.

My absolute favorite thing was that Times Square Doc-in-his-windup image, with that big leg kick – that TDie Tyed mentioned.

Could not agree more, Alex. I tried never to miss a Gooden start in his early days of ’84-’86.
I thought he was well on his way to a HOF career. So sad how he derailed himself heading into the late 80s. What could have been….

CONGRATULATIONS!!! This man was a human highlite as a pitcher, if you did not see this man pitch in his hey days (1984-1991) you missed out on what imo was going to be one of the best pitchers i’ve ever seen, and i had seen really good ones up until then, electrifying stuff, power, knew how to pitch, but it was a shame how all that came crashing down.. Drugs use, problems with the laws and injuries did him in, but there was no pitcher in baseball who people tune in to watch like this guy.. He was well on his way to win more than 200 games and his winning % is among the best in baseball still, great pitcher and well deserved MMO HOF induction..
Still Remember that 1988 scioscia HR in the ninth, for those who were still young or not even alive, that HR was the equivalent of that spiezio triple against us in game 2 of the 2006 NLCS
