no way they let him play it out. If they don't get a deal he will be extended before ST starts. Really the only 2 possible options here.

I think they'll sign him. Also, something Sandy said stuck out, to me, and it leads me to believe they'll get some sort of outfielder by trading RA within the next two weeks.

Sandy said that the likelihood that the Mets don't sign RA and let him play out his option year is less likely today, then it was yesterday. Now, knowing they are still far apart on money in negotiations, that leads me to believe that they've received an offer or offers which makes him believe a trade is a far more likely option then to simply let RA play out his option year. This was said in the context of them being unable to reach an agreement to an extension and letting him just go into the season and finish his contract. I think after fielding offers recently, Sandy feels that if RA doesn't sign on their terms, they've gotten good enough offers that trading him is the better play moving forward. I mean, something must have changed since yesterday for that possibility to be "less likely" and we know it wasn't the money in the negotiations; it had to be the offers received to trade him.

Perhaps he feels RA's value to the team is greater in a trade if he will only be around for one more season anyway.

Hairston is a signing that makes sense, as Joe says, as a platoon player, RH pinch hitter, and emergency CF. The notion that signing Hairston at around $5 million/year for 2 years means the Mets can't sign another free agent is just total nonsense. It may mean they won't sign a FA RH outfielder with some pop, which is fine. They need to find a leadoff hitter, catcher, and a big arm for the bullpen, so Jeffy better not put away his checkbook after Hairston.

If Hairston concludes free agents signing(im sure thats other then the $1mm contract)then prob should have just kept Bay, I'm sure they'll say saving the $2million this year in Bay deferrals is the only reason we could afford even Hairston. I do like Hairston a lot but unless they come up w another quality OF thru a trade I think I'd prefer new blood and a diff OF then Hairston (unless he can repeat those #'s agin), although I'm not sure who out there is still avail and once again these FA's are going for a lot of $$$...
