Mets To Consider Ross, Pagan, Victorino, Could Dangle Niese
According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets are expected to at least consider free agent OF Cody Ross during the Winter Meetings, but he might be too expensive. Angel Pagan and Shane Victorino will also be considered, but could also be out of the Mets price range.
The Mets could try and get creative and perhaps dangle Jon Niese as trade bait for a legitimate starting outfielder.
In an ideal scenario, he writes, the Mets would trade a starting pitcher and receive a quality catcher and outfielder in return. But that deal might not be easy to find.
In no particular order, the Mets to-do list for the Winter Meetings is as follows:
1. Fix The Outfield
2. Get A Catcher
3. Resolve R.A. Dickey’s Status
4. Look For Bullpen Help
5. Add Major League Depth

How many of those things get fixed at the Winter Meetings? I say just numbers 3 and 5. We’ll sign a couple of bench players like a #4 OF and BU catcher, but that’s all. I could almost hear Sandy’s words on Thursday right now, “We were able to discuss parameters of a deal with a few clubs. Those options will remain open. The more options the better. Options are good.”
Niese is a lefty (y i’d prefer not to trade him), is still peaking, and will play 2013 @ 26 yrs old. i believe he is a very very attractive trade piece.IF were were inclined, i would think we might be able to extract a starting OF + prospects for him.
Let’s not overestimate the hurdles or underestimate our players.
Apparently the Texas Rangers want in on our Dickey lol…..

The more the merrier for his trade value
If we can get Elvis Andrus, Jurickson Profur, Wil Myers or Giancarlo Stanton for any of our starters, you have to make that move.
Stanton or Andrus would be a sign/trade as locking them into manageable rates would have to be part of that deal
But make no mistake, a potential MVP is more valuable than a potential Cy Young award winner.
One guy pitches every 5th day…is affected by infield defense, outfield defense, catcher, a bad offense.
Jon Niese on the 2009 Mets is winning 10 games.
Jon Niese on the 2006 Mets is winning 20 games.
Giancarlo Stanton is getting 40 HR and 100 RBI no matter what team he is on
Having Jon Niese play on a team with a crappy up the middle defense, aka a poor catcher, poor 2B, poor CF, essentially means u negate your best feature ( SP )
The reason RA Dickey did so well…is because RA Dickey did not depend on his fielders, when you lead the league in strikeouts, you are bound to win a few games.
Put Mike Pelfrey on the 1999 Mets and he isnt afraid to throw a groundball inducing sinker…
I truly think Pelf became a flyball pitcher because his infield sucked ass
Put a Ching Ming Wang on the Mets and the results would be similar
NO TEAM WINS CONSISTENTLY without good up the middle defense.
This means C-SS-2B-CF have to be SOLID
And we have POOR defense in 3 out of 4 of those positions.
Getting a better SS, improves 2 of those positions, moving Tejada to 2B improves 2B defense.
The Dickey ( and formely the Wright ) issue is about the fundamentals of building a strong team vs. the ideology of selling a marketable entertainment package.
Say the Mets resigned Reyes for that same 106 mil…resigned Beltran for the same 2 year deal he got from the Cards…kept Angel Pagan and traded David Wright and Zach Wheeler to Florida for Giancarlo Stanton….
A team with Reyes at SS, Tejada at 2B, Beltran in RF, Giancarlo Stanton in LF, Pagan in CF
is defensively and offensively superior to the product we are putting out…
Is it as marketable? no…
none of those players are currently as marketable as David Wright
Is it more productive offensively and defensively? ABSOLUTELY
Reyes and Beltran combined will make 23 mil
Wright and Frank Francisco combined will make 23 mil
I rest my case
please, no Pagan. get smarter, not dumber. as for Victorino–cannot hit. sorry, no go for me.
