Wish that contract being representative of better times was only so.

Don’t forget, that $140 million is spread out over 8 years and both parties agreed to terms enabling the Mets to pay David less now and more later.

If due to all their downsizing and costing cutting the Mets did have more money to spend after accounting for the loans to be paid, the losses over the past four years and the anticipated further decrease in revenue for the upcoming season, then the problem is indeed with Sandy Alderson for there would no longer be a need to take the drastic financial steps he did previously in terms of the roster. He could begin to re-invest in the team, even if gradually – and that means not stopping with David’s (and even possibly R.A.’s) contract.

If he doesn’t, we have to ask ourselves is it a matter of not having the money or the general manager not wanting to spend it. Sandy still has two years to go on his contract and I suspect the Wilpons will still need him to save every nickel and dime he could.

I am assuming the Mets would be looking a Parra as a LOOGY. He was misused in Mil. As a guy to pitch against both sides but he was very good against LH striking out 33 in 124 PA and only allowing one HR.

If we just spent close to $140 on Wright, our financial situation has to be fine. I think the Wilpons and Sandy want us to think they’re broke. I honestly don’t know why. Also, it really is a disgrace that a NY team cannot spend $7 million. This is NY!!! Not small market Minnesota or Kansas City!

I hope R.A. stays. That the Mets have to use him as trade bait because they can’t afford to simply go out and sign players outright like Lannon and Reynolds I believe is an indication that the financial situation still does not sit well with Sterling Equities as many have been suggesting.

Of course, it doesn’t surprise me that Sandy and his people would be looking into Manny Parra. With his talent, he would be a perfect replacement to keep our two-year run of disastrous bullpens going and at $1.2 million would also fit perfectly into our Pittsburgh/Kansas City-type payroll. And this way we still have a Manny in the bullpen.

I think you could make it a piece in support of Lannan overall. Write about why you think Lannan is a good fit for the Mets and you can give a little background on him overall.

You can explain why you think he’ll be more effective as a reliever, then, you can move into using the Ojeda comparison as extra fuel.

It doesn’t have to be too long and I think the comparison is valid and unique.

I think he would be fine anywhere on the staff as long as he doesn’t get sent down to AAA like the Nats did last season. With Gonzalez,Strasburg, Zimmermann, Detwiler, and Jackson, along with a good pen, I can see how and why Lannan was the odd man out.

Hitman, I see what you are saying. Lannan has been a solid starter for most of his career. I didn’t understand why the Nats treated him as they did but that’s their problem. I’m unsure is Lannan would be cool with a long man job if we didn’t have a spot open up.

Would you pay $7 million for a bench player like Reynolds? How much are you willing to pay for a guy that’s atrocious anywhere but 1st base, is capable of blasting 40+ HRs, but can’t hit for average?

Lannan’s father worked with my wife in the law firm that represented Allstate Insurance claims. Even though they’re Yankee fans they would be ecstatic if he were to become a Met.

Lannan is an interesting case because it is the right call for the Mets to use him as insurance, but personally, I feel he would thrive out of the bullpen. I said this in another article: If you compare Lannan’s 6 seasons in the majors, his numbers are somewhat similar to a fellow lefthander and former Met Bobby Ojeda after his first 6 seasons in the majors before coming to the Mets. What’s even more of a coincidence is that Ojeda was 28 when he became a Met. Lannan’s 28.

Ojeda’s career numbers with BOS (6 seasons):
4.21 ERA, 1.418 WHIP, 9.2 H/9, 0.8 HR/9, 3.6 BB/9, 5.3 K/9

Lannan’s career numbers (6 seasons):
4.01 ERA, 1.424 WHIP, 9.4 H/9, 0.9 HR/9, 3.4 BB/9, 4.7 K/9

From a power standpoint and to at least use his bat off the bench…for somewhere other than 3rd base because he’s atrocious there, I’d like Reynolds as a Met. You know Collins likes to play everyone at least every other day to stay fresh.
