Mets Could Extend Dickey To Improve Their Elf-Image

Lending further to the accuracy of ESPN New York, reporting that R.A. Dickey is likely to remain a Met, the knuckleballer has agreed to play an elf alongside Ike Davis on Tuesday at Citi Field.

John Franco will play Santa Clause at the team’s annual holiday party tomorrow at Citi Field, as the Mets host schoolchildren from Far Rockaway who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Only a real Grinch would trade an elf during the holiday season. Bah, humbug… ;-)

Original Post 12/9 3:00 PM

Andy Martino of the Daily News is reporting that the Mets and R.A. Dickey have resumed negotiations and that they have made some modest progress on a contract extension since things cooled off at the Winter Meetings.

I believe that the Mets and Dickey got locked into a game of chicken when they were in Nashville, with neither side willing to budge on the dollars of a two-year extension.

With both sides now back at the bargaining table, expect something to get done before the holidays. It’s no secret that Dickey wants to remain a Met, and while teams have come to the Mets to discuss the reigning Cy Young winner, Alderson has been emphatic that he is not actively shopping the knuckleballer.

Even so, Alderson has told inquiring teams that it would take a difference maker to nab Dickey. As I said earlier on Twitter, after getting smoked on the Angel Pagan trade last offseason,  the Mets won’t trade Dickey unless they are grossly overpaid.

  • Just sign him already, all this horseplay is counterproductive and has stifled this front office from doing anything this offseason. Eight more weeks until Alderson’s third offseason concludes and he wont be able to hang this one on Madoff.

    • You really think we’d have some moves made if not for the Dickey situation? What does Dickey have to do with signing an outfielder? We dont have one outfielder with at least one full season played on his resume. What does Dickey have to do with re-signing Hairston? Or getting a setup man? This GM has proven to be incompetent.

    • Agreed. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Our rotation is exponentially better with him at the 1 or 2 spot. He’s a righty, but can disrupt a team’s batting order like a very difficult lefty. He’s lead the staff by example and, apart from his stellar performance, brings intangibles into the locker room that can’t be quantified.

Re-signing Dickey should be a non-issue. I mean, he’s asking for less than Oliver Perez, for God’s sake!!!

  • If your going to sign Dickey, then sign him and let’s move on,at least we would have a good pitching rotation. And then try everybody and his uncle in the outfield with some kind of hope that somebody will produce?

  • Get this done.
After seeing how much Greinke got paid, I can’t believe the money Dickey is asking for is out of line. Maybe if the Wilpons stayed out of it (reports are they want him traded), they can get this done.

The worst scenario is we go into the season neither trading nor extending him.

    • Still trumpeting Wilpon wherever you comment. lol

      • or, referencing the recent published reports that the Wilpons are interfering with Dickey, after taking a lead role on the Wright deal?

  • This has dragged on for two months already. Remember when we were supposed to have this done before the World Series? I’m not even sure I even want Mike Alt anymore. Too much that can go wrong.

  • Hope you’re right Joe. I never understood the wisdom of trading him in the first place. How does that make us better or more competitive? LGM!

  • That sucking sound you hear is Sandy Alderson. When will we ever get a GM who’s worth his weight in salt?

    • when? never as long as the owners are the same, because odds are when Sandy leaves (and that will be soon) you are getting a much bigger dose of Jeffy. No chance in hell they are going to get a young hot shot like Daniels or Friedman (who of course was an ivy league brain and not a BB guy anyway) and give them autonomy to go out and make moves. Instead Jeffy will play GM without the title, and J.P. will become the latest puppet having his strings pulled.

  • Making moderate progress? Is that GM-speak for sending him a box of Russell Stover? :-D

  • Dickey is a winner, a mentor to our younger pitchers, a solid presence in the clubhouse, and an inspirational person. Oh yes, he’s also the best pitcher in the National League. This the type of player you keep.

    • No Dickey won the award for best season…that does not make him the best pitcher in the league. Cain, Kershaw, Strasburg are just three who are better than Dickey.

  • After seeing Grienke contract it makes alot of sense to sign Dickey, his contract demands are reasonable, he’s a frontline starter, a leader, id like him to stay a Met.. they better be ‘overserved’ on any trade offer..we’re much better off signing RA and signing a free agent OF and C that can contribute, becuase the offset to the loss of RA not only next season but the void losing Santana and RA will leave after next seson won’t be worth an upgrade on offense where we have guys that still have updside not to mrention anything we can do free agent mkt..im all about signing him unless we are given a lopsided trade..

  • Wilpon was 100% responsible for Wright’s deal. Pretty sure Alderson would have never done the deal if it were up to him. However Dickey has been all him and it bothers me that doesn’t think a Cy Young winner isn’t worth $15 million a year. This shouldn’t be the mindset for a large market team.

    • but you are missing the key point. I am sure Sandy and the boys are perfectly aware that the proposed deal is very reasonable considering what other guys are getting. But they are still in position to trade him for desperately needed offensive help.

    • Dan! Exactly right. Wilpon has as much to do with Dickey as they did with Frank Francisco. Dickey alone put $10 million extra in Wilpon’s pockets from the packed houses when he started.

  • Trade him.

    • The FA market is clearing showing a frointline starter will cost big..we have a guy that will stay at a beyond resonable price, not to mention he’s such an awesome Met/guy/person..im tempted to trade him, as a frustated Met fan, for a new look team but i think we’re better off keeping him and filling in the gaps either thur free agents or maybe even parting with some ofour systme, because our starting staff next year has a chance to be top5 in baseball and after Santana is gone next year it’ll be almost imposs to replace him with a #1 starter thru free agency since we know the pricetag..we have some offense we nned to get some more help but if we sign RA ultimatly the ‘savings’ on a #1 starter can go toward other need areas..

      • We have pitching. We also have holes at all three outfield spots and catcher. Trade from the surplus and help fill some holes. This isn’t a playoff team next year anyway.

The right move (read: SMART move) is to trade him.

        • The Giants won the WS with a great starting staff and totally spotty team around them(BPosey aside), it can be done dude, i agree we def need to address OF, C and bullpen thou but i think we can without purging RA..

  • Hi Joe,

“I believe that the Mets and Dickey got locked into a game of chicken when they were in Nashville, with neither side willing to budge on the dollars of a two-year extension.”

How could one equate R.A. and his agent getting locked into a game of chicken with the Mets in light of the information you had passed on to us just a short time ago? If what was reported back then was true, how could there be anything now more than a modest impasse that could not be settled? My guess is either the Mets are trying to see how much more they can get R.A. to give into (due to his desire to stay with the team), are still undecided on what to do roster-wise and are stalling, or there are major issues we are still unaware of.

    http://metsmerizedonline.com/2012/12/check-that-dickey-looking-for-less-than-29-million-extension.html

    • The major issue appears to be SA wants to extend him and ownership does not, per Harper.

      • lol Link by any chance?

        • Already posted it once a couple of days ago, but here you are:

          http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/haper-mets-team-knuckle-pact-article-1.1215205

          • Hi Srt,

Had to laugh seeing the link to buy Mets tickets that appeared at the end of the article because all it consisted of was those three words in small blue letters – like a simple, drab one line tiny classified ad buried somewhere in a neighborhood weekend newspaper.

Yup, no expense too small when it comes to these guys! :)

            • LOL…didn’t even notice that.
I use AdBlock so I don’t get many adds. Since I’m probably one of legions of folks who do that, these sites just get creative now in embedding this stuff within the article, I guess.

          • That’s very vague and none of the regular beat writers stepped up to confirm this. Sort of like when Rubin said Mets insiders hinted the team was dissatisfied with Ike Davis. Remember that one?

            • Harper was on SNY’s DNL Friday and expanded on this article. He might be the only one reporting it at this time but wouldn’t go so far as to say he’s making it all up.

              • Not saying he made it up, just saying janitors and hot dog vendors make for poor sources. Giving him the same treatment Rubin got for the unsubstantiated Ike Davis rumors. Until a second person verifies it there’s nothing to see here. Even TRS would agree with this as he’s the first person to knock down a single sourced rumor. When Dickey won the Cy Young he gave two special thank yous. One for Minaya and one for Wilpon and Katz. So…

                • ‘When Dickey won the Cy Young he gave two special thank yous. One for Minaya and one for Wilpon and Katz…’

Not sure what that has to do with anything. If this story is true, it doesn’t have to be based on reality, meaning it doesn’t really have to be that Dickey did anything – only the perception to the Wilpons that he did and/or said something to piss them off. This is the Wilpons we’re talking about. They’ve been known to put their foot in their mouths. Like telling the media ‘Omar is their boy as sure as the sun coming out tomorrow’, only to fire him a few months later.

                  • If that article said Wilpon wants Dickey to be signed and Sandy was advising against it then that’s all that would be needed for the bashing to commence. No confirmation would be needed. This thread would have 100 plus comments.

                    • He already is against it. That’s my point. But fact of the matter is we all have our agendas including you. Janitor sourced rumors are as good as the news you want to hear is. Who knows next week Harper could say a Met insider told him that front office is considering demoting Ike Davis unless his walk rate increases. Then everyone will say Harper is full of shit and Harper is a hack. Lets just agree that everyone believes what they want to believe regardless of its veracity.

                    • but where is the proof that Sandy, on the record, says he wants to trade Dickey and not extend him?

                  • You know what it means. It means that apparently Dickey has no problem with Wilpon.

Let me ask you something, did Harper mention what it is they don’t like? Did he offer up a quote? He basically said nothing and you swallowed it whole as if something is there. Plus it’s third party info.

Like I told Fonzie, if he had said something you disagree with, you’d be the first person calling for more info or saying he’s a hack.

                    • ifthevansrockin, were you asleep all week? Alderson has not only admitted he’s talking to teams but even said he wanted two top prospects. Then he said he’d swap him for a difference maker. Some of you must be ignoring the news or something. Oh and if you want more proof have you seen an extension? I havent.

                    • he is also on record as being good with having Dickey back. It is all about value.

if he wanted dickey gone he would trade him for what he could get. That is vastly different than knowing you have a tremendously valuable asset, and looking to see if you can get a top return from him. If not, he stays.

If anything Sandy has an extremely high opinion of him. He also know the team has no position prospects anywhere close, and Dickey is the best ticket to get some.

  • What kind of stupidity is it that SA won’t make any trade(s) now unless he rips the other team off because we got snookered on the Pagan trade? The fans are paying 2x for that dumb move: to have made it and now to not make any trades because of it!
    What the hell.

    • Does anybody really and seriously believe the Pagan trade has made Alderson scared of trading ?????????????
That was a modest, mostly financially related shortterm move of a solid payer in need of a change of scenery in exchange for two pieces with some recent success but at the same salary combined. The longterm impact was negligible with all three becoming free agents after the 2012 season ( with Torres non-tendered).

While one can certainly question Alderson’s vagueness in interviews and a lack of creativity while managing a shoestring budget, it’s ridicoulus claiming he won’t make trades because of the Pagan deal.
Maybe the bigger reason is that the Mets have had very few tradeable commodities over the past 24 months. As a rebuilding team, you’re not likely to trade prospects – and most veterans on the roster were either grossly overpaid ( and thus had no trade value at all like Santana, KRod, Bay, Perez or Castillo), were considered as too important to trade ( Wright), were traded ( Beltran and Pagan, one haul very good, one bad), were let go during the height of financial distress of ownership ( Reyes – we may never know the full story) or are prudently being shopped right now ( Dickey) while weighing the pros and cons of a package of young talent or extending him as a veteran rotation anchor of a young staff.

And please don’t go into the “wah, wah, he didn’t trade Hairston stuff”. What the Mets already have is a very deep system, loaded with 2nd tier prospects. Trading Hairston back in July realistically would have netted a prospect similar to Eric Goeddel, Jefry Marte, Tyler Pill or Juan Lagares. Promising ? Absolutely. Meaningful or worth giving up the hope of getting back to the fringes of the race ? Probably not.

This is being played out very well. At worst, the Mets are bringing back the reigning NL Cy Young award winner.

      • Amen. When you have all the leverage in the world, I don’t understand what the rush is.

  • Why even bother trading Dickey when you could get more for Jon Neise? I know trading Neise is unpopular, but if it delivers what we need, then do it. Just extend Dickey, because the potential for Neise to be good is there, but will he end up being as solid as everyone hopes?

  • CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reports that the Indians have signed Mark Reynolds to a one-year, $6 million contract with incentives he could make an additional 1.5M….Seriously what are the Mets doing? I have been patient but this is crazy. Im not asking for Greinke or Hamilton but this team needs a lot of work and 6M for Reynolds is a fair deal. I also heard rumors that the Mets want more then Olt from Texas for Dickey. Im still keeping the faith and testing my patience but its getting thin.

    • Reynolds? what the heck would the Mets do with him?

      • Well at least we can agree on that. Glad he’s signed before Alderson looked his way once Hairston and Ross come off the table.

    • Well put, Hype…. I’d have put up with ihim in the OF for 6 million.

    • Sandy gets paid huge money to do NOTHING. The team gets worse year after year and we’re supposed to act like he’s a genius! He’s a flipping IDIOT!

      • “The team gets worse year after year and we’re supposed to act like he’s a genius! He’s a flipping IDIOT!”

        Hi Matt,

Yes, he is genuis. After all, he’s been acknowledged as the architect of those great Oakland clubs despite coming on board with absolutely no professional baseball knowledge. For anyone to have accomplished such a great feat simply “coming in cold” (the way he describes his background) is nothing less than pure, inate baseball genuis.

  • Trade him for Olt and then sign Ross and then trade a few minor league pitchers to the Blue jays for jp .

  • Shields and Wade Davis to the Royals for Myers and prospects.

    • This one is going to be looked back upon as a great deal for both sides… Still don’t see Sheilds as a #1, but both he and Wade are better than what the Royals had… Myers is going to be a freakin stud!

  • This is spin for “no one’s offered us S*&t!” I love Andy’s reporting, but the Daily News is part of the marketing arm of the NY Mets… has been for years. With Greinke off the table and the blockbuster between KC and TB things could change, but I read this as Sandy not getting nearly the return he was seeking. Not a bad proposition; I’d rather they sign him than get back Pat Zachary, Steve Henderson, Doug Flynn and Dan Norman in return.

  • So they keep him and then what? Scott Hairston?

    Wholesale changes, huh?

    Does Alderson ever shoot straight?

  • LOL….nice photos hop head of Dickey with Rudolph.

  • You made him look like a bobblehead doll, not an elf! :-D

  • A great signing as this will solidify the starting rotation for years to come .
This will now allow are our pitching prospects to be eased into the rotation.
Now we can focus on acquiring an impact out fielder and hope that Duda can be more productive with his bat. I hope we don’t Olivo a199 BA is a joke, you might as well keep Kelly S.
