Dan Haren Signs With Nationals
The Nationals have agreed to a one yearl, $13 million dollar deal with free agent RHP Dan Haren according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, pending a physical.
The Los Angeles Angels opted to let Dan Haren become a free agent after declining his 2013 $15.5 million dollar team option during last Friday’s deadline.
Haren, 32, dealt with lower back stiffness last season and also showed a marked decline in velocity. He produced a 4.33 ERA and a 12-13 record in 30 starts for the Angels.
But as one scout told Rosenthal, “You know any 32-year-olds with (nearly) 2,000 innings pitched who have good medicals?”

Nats are looking scary.
So what? We sign david wright to a lifetime contract and are looking at vinny pestano
I get that you hate Wright, as does everyone else here. At what point do you stop playing the same track on repeat and contribute something of worth? Especially when the story or any of the comments have nothing to do with him. More than anything that is the reason why other posters get on your case I bet.
“I get that you hate Wright, as does EVERYONE ELSE HERE.”
That couldnt be further from the truth….
Do you even read the comments regarding Wright or just the ones that oppose him. It seems to me you just read the ones that oppose because instead of ignoring Alex’s comment about Wright(since you dont want to start a flame war, as you stated). And instead comment on the post the Haren deal (again like you asked Alex to)you engage him about Wright.
So I’ll direct the question you posed to him to you….

“So what’s your point about Haren signing with the Nats? You don’t have one. So just move along”
Somehow I don’t think you understand English. I was saying that everyone, including myself, understand that Alex and you don’t like Wright. However, we don’t need to bring him up on every comment thread? And I did chip in about Haren. If you read the thread you’d see that. As well as Alex posted about it without mentioning Wright later.
It wasn’t an attack as you seem to think, just purely saying we don’t have to turn everything into the same argument on here. Unless for some reason you feel like we do. Though honestly I, and it seems like others to me, don’t see the appeal in that.
Sane, i am being 100% honest here.. I mean, isn’t that why we celebrated his extension here? I mean, isn’t he gonna lead us to the promise land? Why was the point of signing him then?
So what’s your point about Haren signing with the Nats? You don’t have one. So just move along and stop trolling to make every comment thread a David Wright flame war. I’m not planning on getting sucked into anything, just making a point about civility. Have a nice day.
Back to Haren, Do you think he will bounce back or is it a lame signing? I am wondering why they non-tendered whats his name only to sign Haren for 13 mil and he will probably give them about the same worth.
I’ll say bounce back, with switching back to NL and all.
I am not as sure about that bounce back. Back problems for pitchers are usually a death sentence.
Pitching against the Marlins alone should lower his ERA by a full run!
Yeah lol I hear that. If the Mets are able to move one of their pitchers for some talent maybe they should send The Marlins a thank you card for making them look better. In all honesty though most divisions have a basement dweller I’m just glad its not us.
If nothing else switching leagues will be beneficial. He also pitched much better after returning from the do in the latter part of the year. Solid pick up for the Nats.
I hope Wright does a better job of leading us to the Promised Land than Jose Reyes did for the Marlins.
Forget promise land, at least get them over 500 in his career the mets are 630-632 with reyes the mets were 615-587 to a winning % of 511 so…. Yeah…
Who knew that Reyes while wearing a Marlins uniform last year was actually still playing for the Mets. That explains the 615-595 record despite only having played in 1,050 career regular season games as a Met.
Even though that both players were in the same lineup for a large part of these games and that this is just a slight 615-595 record mistake and Reyes career record in games as a Met is 546-504 the idea that both Reyes or Wright are solely responsible for that record is a stretch to say the least.
Don’t worry I’m sure if the Mets ever win a W.S. with Wright still a Met in the coming years I’m sure there will be something Wright does wrong that someone will be sure to bring up to take away from him.
If the mets win a WS with wright (I very much, and i mean very very very much doubt that) I named my unborn child after him and sandy alderson… Please, you somehow think we hate the guy personally too? All we say is that he’s unclutch as hell and is not worth the contract nor there was any reason to sign him and all of the sudden we hate the guy… amazing.
How could anyone not think you hate him when more than 50% of your comments are to put him down?
The only reason that half of the comments are about this is because people keep it going just move on by if you are not interested in talking about it.
It’s OK your just being honest just as I am as well right now.
Gina, please don’t get offended, how is saying he’s unclutch (HE IS), or that the mets won’t win a WS with him (Currently below 500 with him in the lineup) is hating the man, putting him down or not liking him personally? Spare me the drama ok. you don’t think i want the mets to win a WS and him making eat my words? I just highly doubt it because of the body of work, and trust me, imho i think if the mets win a WS during his tenure here it’d be just like the SF giants with aaron rowand, all about pitching with veterans like a renteria coming trough for us, because his body of work don’t show me or you or anybody that he’ll come trough when it matter the most
For starters it’s not totally accurate “Currently below 500 with him in the lineup”
David Wright has started 1,255 games, of those – the Mets have won 628 and lost 627.
Also “i think if the mets win a WS during his tenure here it’d be just like the SF giants with aaron rowand, all about pitching with veterans like a renteria coming trough for us, because his body of work don’t show me or you or anybody that he’ll come trough when it matter the most”
Who was more valuable to the yankees? Cano or Ibanez? Ibanez had a great postseason, but they ain’t there if Ibanez’s bat replaces Cano in 162 games. If the Mets make the playoffs its probable that Wright had a good-great season. Whether he hits a game winning HR in a playoff game doesn’t determine his value.
If it did guys like Granderson or Cano would lose their job to Ibanez.
are you stupid?? Did the yankees win the WS last year? While ibanez was great for them last year in the playoffs, Cano is the man in the lineup, and him struggling the way he did was the reason the yankees were swept out of the playoffs.. you cannot be serious! BTW, can we get the last 2 years of mets record with wright being the man in the lineup please? Idiot…
No Alex you are totally missing the point of the Wright signing….
It’s good because for the first time since the Sand People got here the best player on the team is actually retained and stops us from sliding further into oblivion.
He’s not going to take us to the promised land, it going to take a Power RH Bat and Wheeler success for that to even be a possibility. But he does zstop us from sliding further into Moneyball history or becoming the Pirates and Oakland.
This is another great move by the Nats $13M and to think the Yanks payed Petite $12M
They already have a fine team but I am unsure about how well this will work for them. Granted it’s only one year so there is little downside but he didn’t look like hisself last year. Plus, Lannan gave them similar number to Haren before he was demoted last year. Seems an odd deal to me.
“Plus, Lannan gave them similar number to Haren before he was demoted last year. Seems an odd deal to me.”
Where has all this John Lannan love come from all of a sudden around here??? Is it because he is from NY???
I honestly dont get your logic how this is a odd or bad deal for the Nats. Haren is coming off a season in which he struggled due to injury He passed the physical and is only signed for “1year”…a prove your healthy deal.
And its crazy to compare Lannan to Haren career wise or even last years totals….When Haren pitched in 30 games 176.2 innings.
You realize Lannan only pitched in “6 Games” for the Nats last year 32.2 innings???
Lannan couldnt crack the rotation let alone the bullpen….He was in their minors majority of the year
I’m not saying it is a bad deal so much as I am saying I think it is odd. I have no particular love Lannan but his career ERAs are pretty comparable to Haren’s. I just think its odd to non-tender a guy and then sign a guy who is similar for more money.
Every time I hear about that deal the Yankees gave Pettitte, I still find it hard to believe. This Haren deal makes them look like complete idiots.
It does appear that sentimental signings are not always the highest value for wins but hey its Pettitte.
Alex, What do you think about Haren?
Quite fankly i like the idea of them getting haren, he’s basically replacing Ejax and when he’s on he can be one of the best pitchers in the game. for one year along with strastburg, zimmerman and him with the bullpen they had etc they can once again be the cream of the crop in the NL, usually pitchers who struggles in the AL and come to the NL somehow find life again, i think Haren was a good pick up by them.. IMO
I agree a pretty durn good pick up considering they are only on the hook for a year. If he does rebound then not much is lost and he will be a serviceable #4 or #5 pitcher.
Nathan, imagine this, this guy had a really bad year last year, but prior to that the guy avg 15 wins per season to go along with 220+ IP from 2005-2011, he can be more than a serviceable #4 or #5, this guy can be a bonafide #2 or even maybe a #1 on some teams if he does revert back to being who he was prior last year.
The upside is there no doubt. I am more leery of pitchers with back issues. Haren has had some fine years mixed in with his career. The #4 or 5 comment was basically my way of saying they really can’t lose in this deal.
LOL I meant to say if he doesn’t rebound he is still a serviceable starter. OOps.
