Cy Gone: Reactions To Dickey Trade From The Locals

r.a. dickey

I’ll be posting reactions from the major media outlets as they begin to weigh in on the trade between the Mets and Blue Jays I tired making some calls to get some information on who the unknown prospect is that that the Mets are also including in the trade, but mum’s the word. But although all the pieces have yet to be confirmed, here are a few excerpts from this morning’s edition’s of the major papers.

New York Daily News

Even if Travis d’Arnaud turns out to be an All-Star catcher for years to come, the Mets aren’t going to be better in 2013 and likely ’14 for trading R.A. Dickey, a development that appeared all but certain as of Saturday afternoon. So there is always going to be an argument for keeping the National League Cy Young winner, and a good one at that, no matter what the final pieces of the trade with the Blue Jays turn out to be.

But if that means winning 74 games again next season rather than 80, does it really matter? The Mets still aren’t spending significant money on free agents this winter, after all, and it’s rather difficult to consider them a legitimate contender without a bona fide major-league outfielder anywhere to be found.

So with that in mind, I can’t knock what Sandy Alderson is doing here. For starters, the Mets have huge position-player holes to fill, and the inclusion of d’Arnaud makes good on the GM’s declaration that he would deal his 20-game winner only in return for a “difference-maker.’’ – John Harper, Daily News

New York Times

By trading Dickey to the Toronto Blue Jays, pending the negotiation of a contract extension, the Mets essentially told their fans that they do not expect to contend for the next three years. The Mets have already staggered through four consecutive losing seasons, three shy of the franchise record. Now the wait to be relevant drags on.

This is a pitcher who went 20-6 for a team that was 74-88, becoming the first Met to win the Cy Young Award since 1985. He was a beacon on a dreary team, and he has earned the right to be trusted that he will be prepared for the season.

To the Mets, apparently, it is fine for David Wright, their new $138 million player, to visit David Letterman and Jon Stewart, as he has done in the past. Yet when Dickey appears on the same shows, as he has this off-season, he’s full of himself. Please. – Tyler Kepner, New York Times

Wall Street Journal

This is a franchise that has now lost a batting champion, in Jose Reyes, and a Cy Young winner in the 38-year-old Dickey in the last two winters. The Mets have finished in fourth place, below .500, each of the last four seasons, and it would be a shock if they climbed out of those depths in 2013.

Despite signing third baseman David Wright, their franchise player, to a long-term extension this winter, the Mets are clearly looking down the road, rebuilding around youth and prospects gleaned in trades of Dickey and Carlos Beltran.

The trade would close the book on Dickey’s remarkable time in New York, three seasons in which he emerged from obscurity to become one of baseball’s best pitchers, mastering the knuckleball in his mid-30s and using it to carve through the National League. – Daniel Barbarisi, Wall Street Journal

The Record

The trade would send Dickey, catcher Josh Thole and a lesser prospect to Toronto in exchange for 23-year-old catcher Travis d’Arnaud, 20-year-old pitcher Noah Syndergaard, veteran catcher John Buck and another lesser prospect.

The move would position the Blue Jays as a potential World Series contender. It would set the Mets up for what they hope will be a run a few seasons down the road when young pitchers Zack Wheeler and Matt Harvey are perched atop the starting rotation.

While d’Arnaud — one of the top catching prospects in baseball – may not start the season with the Mets, he was the linchpin to this deal. Baseball America had him at No. 17 on its list of prospects heading into the 2012 season. He hit .333 with 16 homers and 52 RBI last season for Class AAA Las Vegas. – Mike Kerwick, The Record

New York Post

Dickey joins a team that already has an icon, slugger Jose Bautista, and a roster filled with talent, including his former Mets teammate Jose Reyes. He’ll share starting rotation turns with exported Marlins Mark Buehrle and Josh Johnson; Toronto skipper John Gibbons has an array of options for an Opening Day starter.

The chatty knuckleballer enjoyed his fame in New York, irking some teammates along the way. Perhaps the Blue Jays fans will latch onto Dickey the same way their Mets brethren did, but for sure, the context has changed. Toronto baseball enthusiasts haven’t seen their club qualify for the playoffs since 1993, and now that seems quite possible to change. There’s no need for exciting distractions up in Ontario. There’s just the desire for contributors to the cause.

However much Dickey occasionally annoyed Mets folks, there was never any accusation that his extracurricular activities took away from his pitching. Now, though, Dickey should have fewer events on his calendar and more help to reach his first World Series. What better epilogue to his Mets years could he write than building on his Cy Young Award with a ring? – Ken Davidoff, New York Post

* * * * * * * *

That Post seems to want to continue taking shots at Dickey and I wish I knew why. And it’s not just Davidoff, Puma has been doing it too.

Later today, I want to see what the national main stream media is saying and I’ll dig up some reactions from CBS Sports, FOX Sports, ESPN, Sports Illustrated and Yahoo.

  • The Post keeps taking jabs because that’s the Mets way. They trashed Seaver the same way just prior to trading him only in the case of Dickey they’ve left his wife out of it.

    • The Post has been a staunch Mets-basher the last few years, tearing apart the Wilpons at every opportunity. Davidoff is fiercely independent and not one who can be bought, if anyone knows him from his Newsday days. So why would the “Mets” be behind this and why would the Post serve as puppets for the team?

Moreover, none of the smear stuff in Davidoff’s columns is being written as sourced material. Rather it is his own opinion.

Don’t let Davidoff off the hook for his words/opinions. Those are his and he needs to take the heat and responsibility for them.

Moreover, to a lesser extent, both Rubin and Burkhardt are parroting Davidoff. And Rubin certainly is no friend of the Mets front office. If anyone is immune to being bought by Mets management, it’s Rubin.

    • Sorry Phil…you are wrong about the Post bashing Seaver in 1977!

It was the Dick Young of the Daily News who had was wiping M.D.Grant’s butt in 1977. Young vilified Seaver’s wife Nancy, claiming that she was jealous of Ruth Ryan and the $$ Nolan Ryan was getting.

Dick Young created the Midnight Massacre for MDG

      • Thanks for the correction.

  • And Davidoff accuses Dickey of being an attention getting whore? All righty then…

Hate losing Dickey but have to agree with Jon Harper.

  • This narrative by Davidoff and co. of Dickey being a Me,Me,Me guy is ridiculous at best! R.A. Dickey had more integrity than Davidoff ever thought of! That said this is a trade that had to be done, no matter how unfortunate it is we have to trade our 20 game winner. This is the absolute best return Sandy could have gotten for Dickey. And as Mets fans I don’t think that we could ask for more!

  • Still no word on that extension and just 30 hours left. This is going down to the wire.

  • Davidoff was never like this until he got to the Post. It’s obvious he has his marching orders and wouldn’t it make sense that Rupert Murdoch and Fred Wilpon are more than just strange bedfellows?

    • Not really, since Murdoch now owns a big piece of YES as well as a bunch of other regional networks, including one the Mets ditched to start SNY. Why would he be down to do Wilpon’s bidding?

The Post just likes taking shot at the Mets as a whole. If anything, the News is the unofficial mouthpiece for the organization.

  • It’s the Post, this is what they do. Weather it’s sports, local news, whatever their articles are designed to get clicks and paper buys. They are a step away from TMZ.

    • *Whether… Sorry it’s snowing right now.

    • You think the post has the literacy level or journalistic integrity of TMZ? That’s more credit than I’m willing to give.

  • Again, i do agree the mets will not be in contention for years to come, which makes the signing of the “FranchisE” player more mind boggling… We could’ve added more prospects and/or Major league ready talent for him as well, but instead, we’ll be paying him $20 million for years to come for mediocre production at best while winning 70-80 games per year…

    • Or we could stop taking reaches with our top round picks so we could have closer to the majors quality talent instead of prospects that were 5-6 years away and big risks. We dont have the luxury like the Yankees to take high risk/high ceiling guys.

Yes if you sign David Wright (a big mistake) then you sign Dickey and surround him with talent to win. You make sure that Ike Davis and Wright get some protection, and most likely in the form of an outfielder with righthanded pop.

You had a rotation that was top 5 in the NL and could get even better and they dismantled it for more projects, prospects and suspects. None of whom will even start the season.

Winning is not a priority, get ready for the 5th losing season in a row and over 90 losses.

But hey, Las Vegas could finish first or second this year.

We have lawyers and accountants calling the shots for this team.

      • Look at the Mets drafts 2003 through about 2009. You see mostly players like you speak. Reese Havens. Eddie Kunz. And of the ones who did make it, how many all stars were there? Wright, a HS kid, is the only one drafted who made an all star appearance.

The Mets draft tactics for the last 20 years has been pathetic. It is time to try some aggressive drafting by going after some of the kids with a risk. At least they have an upside.

        • “The Mets draft tactics for the last 20 years has been pathetic”

Agreed. Drafted based on need at the time instead of upside.

    • Alex – without getting into the whole you versus me thing… you keep saying they could have dealt wright for more prospects and i keep reading it and shaking my head. Can I tell you why?

Today, we eagerly await to find out if RA Dickey will sign an extension with Toronto in order to get 2 prospects back for him.

Do you not think a trade partner would want to do the same with David Wright? If Toronto will only make the trade if the 38 year old signs a contract, then who is acquiring Wright without a contract extension and if you’re 30 year old (in a few days) David Wright why in the world would you sign an extension with a new team when you can hit the open market and chat with many teams who have weaknesses at 3B such as the Angels, Braves, Reds, maybe the Yankees etc?

You wouldn’t. Wright’s career and Dickey’s career path are much different. Dickey gambling to go on the open market is not wise considering he’s had 3 big league seasons and is 38 years old.

So the notion that you’d magically get top prospects for Wright is just silly to me and based on nothing that makes sense if you were Wright and his agent.

If Wright was traded to KC for Wil Myers (just for example) you think he’d honestly sign a 6-7 year deal with them? No way.

So then how are you getting top prospects for him?

      You’re not.

      • If Wright was traded to KC for Wil Myers (just for example) you think he’d honestly sign a 6-7 year deal with them? No way.”

The same way we couldn’t have gotten top prospect/s for beltran right? Again, a Team could’ve had him a whole year and pay him accordingly for what he was worth, but instead, we stupidly signed him for years to come while the team is on FULL ON rebuilding mode, meaning, that by next time this team is in championship contention mode wright’s best years will be a thing of the past (They already are, i mean he’d be jason bay 2.0)

        • maybe Alex, but you’re banking on a team being desperate at the trade deadline. That’s a huge gamble to take. The Mets got Wheeler because the Giants thought Beltran would give them the 2nd half push toward a title. You think SF doesn’t regret that deal?

You’re asking a team to make a mistake. You & I do not know if Wright was discussed to other teams. Maybe the offers weren’t there because any team should know that Wright and his agent would be fools to do anything but hit the open market if traded.

Dickey is different. If you’re 38 year old Dickey who has been through hell and back to get here, you need security for the final years of your career. You need to not worry about a job. You need to know if you go 10-13 in 2013 you still have a job. If Dickey has a down year and tries to hit the open market, his value plummets because teams will use it against him and his repertoire/age.

If you’re Wright and you hit the open market coming off a bad year, you’re still getting a pretty solid contract most likely.

          • didnt regret last year…they are focused on winninfg titles as they have the last two of three seasons. If a good kid like wheeler is the price , it is the price. They don’t regert anything. Beltran played well for them but the rest of the team underperformed down the stretch. you cant get punch drunk over prospects

            • you can’t get punch drunk over prospects”

              THIS^^^
which is what we’ve been reduced to since our FO doesn’t like to spend money and our financial situation… So they’re shoving this new cutlure of BS about prospects…

            • Oh I am sure the championship lessens the blow of losing a top pitching prospect for a guy who played for them for 2 months.

But, that still doesn’t mean they don’t look back on the deal in a negative light

When Beltran joined the Giants, they were 4 games in front of the NL West. By September 1st, they were 6 games out behind Arizona and 10 games behind Atlanta for the wildcard.

Beltran’s 15 starts .300 average, .323 on base, 1 HR and 3 RBI in August did nothing for the Giants. Plus, he got hurt to boot.

What he did in September didn’t matter because they were already practically out of the race and finished 8 games out.

I’m not suggesting that at the time they shouldn’t have tried to win it with Beltran. I am suggesting that they failed miserably and lost a top pitching prospect for their troubles. Does 2012 help? Totally. But it doesn’t make them forget the mistake they made.

              • I am sorry, did wheeler win a CY that i don’t know about? You’re making it out to be as the Wheeler trade was not only a win for the mets but as if it’s already paying divident!!! Let the guy throw a pitch in the majors first before proclaiming him Tom Seaver.. This is why some people dislike some of yous sandy lovers, you’re only making this comment based on the fact that it was sandy that made that trade.. Gee

                • You’re not reading what I am saying

The SF Giants were leading the division by 4 games when they traded their best young pitching prospect for a pending free agent. That free agent had a below average august and even got hurt and by Sept 1 the Giants were out of the race and said player would not return to them in 2012.

That’s a bad trade any way you slice it. It didn’t work. Right now if Zach Wheeler wins 20 games in total in his entire career the trade was a fail by the Giants.

They got nothing in return for one of their best prospects.

                  • I’d have to say that was a case of good process bad result. The Giants were contenders but needed serious help in the outfield. Beltran was available and looked like he was going full steam.

                    • Right. The idea to try and win when it’s in front of you isn’t so bad. But at the end of the day, it didn’t work. It actually failed badly and they had nothing to show for it.

        • whether you like to admit it or not, this was a bad deal for the mets. Wright is not worth that contract nor he’s worth it to the mets, he’s not the player he was from 2005-2008 nor is he the atraction some fans make him out to be, not sure about you, but i hardly find people saying i’m going to the mets game to watch david wright play”. he’s not the type of player fans will show up to the stadium to go see, wanna know who was a player like that? Jose Reyes, Strwberry, Gooden.. Wright is not that player so i am not sure what the mets were thinking. They could’ve waited to trade him at the deadline and/or let him walk and get picks for him, if you are a true baseball fan and not a fan of the name in the back you’ll admit this was a bad deal for the mets and their plan of rebuilding moving forward, $20 million for an avg 3rd baseman? come on man!!!!!

          • “he’s not the player he was from 2005-2008 nor is he the atraction some fans make him out to be, not sure about you, but i hardly find people saying i’m going to the mets game to watch david wright play”

See again I think you’re looking at how YOU view Wright and assuming you are the majority.

David Wright received over 4 million all-star votes in 2012. So whether YOU think he’s not an attraction doesn’t speak as loudly as 4 million votes does.

            • David Wright received over 4 million all-star votes in 2012. So whether YOU think he’s not an attraction doesn’t speak as loudly as 4 million votes does”

LMAO, how idiotic is that statement!!!!! in a city of 8 million he received 4 million while having an all wordly first half!?!?! Yeah sure!!!! You’re very naive bro, i get you like the guy and you’re super excited to have him for years to come, but i rather win than root for a player regardless of how bad the team does..

            • and David Wright was here the entire time attendance dwindled from record setting numbers to now very low numbers.

No player is that big of an attraction in baseball.

Winning = the biggest attraction in baseball

              You win, we come
              You dont, we wont

              its pretty simple

      • The only way the Wright situation would net anything would be to do a deal like Johan…contingent upon the signing of a new contract. Some of those teams you mentioned, Braves, Yanks, or Angels, might have agreed to that.

Crying over spilt milk at this point…Wright signed and in my opinion Alderson never shopped him because the Wilpons didnt want him to. Dickey, as we can see, didnt get the same love from the owners.

      • How about a scenario trading David Wright and Frank Francisco to the Dodgers for Hanley Ramirez, Joc Pederson and Yasiel Puig?

Hanley is signed for only 2 more seasons ( 1 year w/ 1 option ). You can move him to either 3B or SS. Moving Tejada to 2B or keeping him at SS.

You get a top OF prospect in Puig and another in Pederson, both appear to be blocked in LA

Even better, if Hanley rebuilds his value here, you can trade him for more prospects.

Since we are essentially a rebuilding team, players like Johan Santana, Francisco should be trade bait if it means getting good prospects in return.

That would be a SMART way to rebuild

Keeping a major trade chip and making him untradeable is absolutely azz-backwards.

There are some teams in a win-now mode or who want to win relatively soon who would’ve made great trade partners for DW

        Detroit
        LA
        Toronto
        Philadelphia
        St Louis

We made DW into Allan Houston

        • Damaja – all you did with your idea was a) try to pawn off an injured reliever who by the way the dodgers have a closer. and b) make my point for me

“Detroit, LA, Toronto, Philadelphia, St Louis”

So again, why would any team give up any prospects for a guy who has at least 5 or more bigger market teams who need a 3B? Why would Wright sign with the Dodgers before stepping foot in their locker room when you have a bunch of win now teams who need a 3B. Would you do it? I don’t see how any agent could recommend that to be honest

          • Why would Wright sign with the Dodgers before stepping foot in their locker room when you have a bunch of win now teams who need a 3B. Would you do it? I don’t see how any agent could recommend that to be honest”

The same reason why he signed with a team that’s going nowhere fast, has had 4 straight losing season going into their 5th… MONEY!!!!

          • So again, why would any team give up any prospects for a guy who has at least 5 or more bigger market teams who need a 3B?

YOU MAKE ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE HERE

why would a team like Detroit …or St Louis…or Toronto…go for David Wright when a team like LA needs a 3B?

do you think Detroit or Toronto cares if the Yankees or Philadelphia is heartbroken over the lack of 3B options on the market ?

sweet jesus, you are stubbornly brain dead this morning in another futile attempt to protect the reputation of your lord and savior Sandy Alderson and the golden boy David Wright

            • you’re not comprehending the words I am saying to you.

You’re 30 year old David Wright, you just spent your entire career with 1 team and got traded the year before you hit free agency.

Detroit, Toronto, Philadelphia, Yankees, Angels, Dodgers, Reds, White Sox, and Braves are all in “win now” mode and all have $ to spend.

Why in the world would you sign an extension with one of them before hitting the market which would theoretically have 7-9 teams bidding for your services? Why would you do that? And why would you do that in this off-season? That’s a terrible business decision. He isn’t RA Dickey looking for security at age 38.

You wouldn’t do that. There’s no way you’d that. It makes no sense.

              • You mean the way Adrian Gonzalez did ?

  • We still need an outfielder (CF). So do we turn around the pitching prospect for one or see if if we can get a Peter Bourjos for some other prospect or maybe a reliever (Parnell).

    • Honestly, I am OK with Kirk and DD in CF, what we need is a power hitting RF.

      • This is why I’ve suggested Kendrys Morales. Would do nicely hitting right behind Davis in the lineup.

        • Morales? You mean Trumbo?

Morales hasn’t played the OF in 4 years and has played there less than 20 times in the bigs and 13 times in the minors.

You can’t put him in RF….

          • and yet we do the same with Murphy and Valdespin !

just stick him in there and if he sucks blame him for not adjusting fast enough !!!

          • You know who else didn’t play the OF in 4 years and did just fine? Berkman.

A reason why Morales hasn’t played the OF for so long is because they didn’t have a need for him out there anymore with Vlad & Abreu manning RF.

            • Abreau? Not exactly a defensive minded player. If you are in the DH role because Abreau is taking a position in the OF, that tells the entire story.

        • Hey Hitman, you were a big Kevin Plawecki guy weren’t you in the shoutbox? Or was that Leroy Brown? Wasted pick now? Still no outfielders.

          • You’re probably referring to Leroy because I was actually neutral on Plawecki. I wouldnt call it a wasted pick. Maybe the Mets will finally develop some decent catching depth from here.

        • Kendrey Morales at this point is a DH. I do not think his legs are outfield material. I would rather solidify CF and let Kirk N. battle it out for RF. With Duda in LF right now, we need a superior defensive CF. If we can get a power bat for RF great but not sure if that is going to be the case. Maybe Hairston and Kirk for RF?

      • This is why Dickey should have been dealt for. They should have gone balls to the wall for Wil Myers and we’d have our next Darryl Strawberry for the next ten years. A player who projects for 30+ homerun power. But no, we had to go and chase down a deal for a luxury item we really didn’t need.

        • But in regards to Myers

          http://metsmerizedonline.com/2012/12/wheeler-and-niese-was-the-price-for-royals-package.html

“This deal was on the table for Mets last week, per source: Niese and Wheeler to KC for Myers and similar package to what TB got for Shields.”

So you can’t say they should have dealt Dickey for Myers.

          • Per source? Who was the source Deep Throat?

          • Means nothing Jessep. Blue Jays also said D’Arnaud wasn’t on the table and yet he was. If you want a player badly enough, you usually get them. It’s always been that way.

  • Rumors have it that RA Dickey had an extramarital affair with Ken Rosenthal’s wife.

That totally explains why Ken wants us to feel that RA is all about the Dickey

    • whoops…meant to say Davidoff

  • Now I know why newspapers are going the way of dinosaurs! Look folks Met fans know more about the Mets than these snobbish , elite, we know better than you sports writiers. Met fans knew we weren’t going to compete in ’13 and our best hope is to have a legitimate chance in ’14 and not leater than ’15, through trades or home grown talent. We are starting to put the pieces together but the BIG mistake is not agressively going after Michael Bourne for a 4-5 year contract. Find the money and get thios guy. He is available but n ot for long.

    • I like Bourn but not for 4-5, more like 3 with an option. But yes you are right.

      • its crazy how in an off-season that has 5 very capable CF on the free-agent market…we were never in the discussion for any of them…despite the fact that we have a grand canyon size hole in CF + RF with a very slow LF in Duda

        Josh?
        Bourne?
        Upton?
        Pagan ?
        Victorino ?
        Ross ?
        Ludwick ?
        Matsui ?
        Swisher ?
        Young?

All too expensive to protect our golden boy that we spent 138 million on…the only OF we have been tied to and loosely at that is Scott Hairston, the guy Sandy refused to trade in an desperate effort to get to .500

o and that god-awful bullpen we had in 2011-2012…any improvements this year? NOPE !!!

so again…can anyone tell me why on god’s green earth did we not trade DW ?

      • The rumor mill is that Bourn now is thinking of a one year contract and then explore options after the 13 season. We should be in there talking to him and his market is not as favorable now as it was before all the free agents like Victorino and Hamilton signed.

  • Mets: 2011 with batting champ Reyes and RA…4th place
Mets 2012 without batting champ Reyes but with CY RA…4th place
Mets 2013 without batting champ Reyes and CY RA…most likely 4th place.

    At least they are consistent.

    • Too bad we never added to them only subtracted. Imagine R.A. Cy with Pagan in CF and Beltran in RF last season. That’s the question you SHOULD be asking. Add their numbers in for Torres and Duda. See where the Mets are in runs scored, RBI and WINS.

      • And then bring back Hernandez to play first and Mike Piazza to play catcher and just imagine the possibilities!!!

Do you honestly believe that what a player does in St. Louis means that they’d do the exact same thing in NY?

You get on Wright for his 2nd half in 2012. Do you realize Beltran had almost the exact same 2nd half numbers?

Since you have no basis for really giving evidence of how the Mets would do if they had Pagan/Beltran in 2012 all you can do is use WAR (unfortunately). Pagan+Beltran = 8 wins more than Torres+Bay.

        So I just imagined it… 82-80, wow I’m overwhelmed with joy……….

        • You’re an idiot, among other things, with an agenda, actually two agendas. The more I tell you to ignore me or alex, the more you want to flame the site and then pin it on us.

          • It is a public message board. If you don’t want comments to your posts, don’t post them. Have a nice phone call or email exchange with people if you want to keep it private.

        • You do realize Beltran and Pagan are still active players…who have hit the free-agent market in 2011-2012 and still have homes in NY ?

          LMAO

“You get on Wright for his 2nd half in 2012. Do you realize Beltran had almost the exact same 2nd half numbers?”

David Wright has done that same 2nd half dive for 4 straight season…and you forgot that you cant include Beltran’s HOF level performance in the playoffs….which actually started in the last 2 weeks of the regular season

Beltran hit .345 with 3 HR and 10 RBI in the last 14 games of the season

But yes, thank you for highlighting David Wright and Carlos Beltrans 2nd half performances

Carlos Beltran signed a 2 year 26 mil deal
David Wright signed a 8 year 138 mil deal

Guess which player is more tradeable

          Hint: Not the American Idol

        • yup cuz an OF of Hairston and Duda in LF…with Pagan in CF and Beltran in RF and Baxter off the bench would totally not make any difference.

          That totally makes sense

o and Lucas Duda was ranked the WORST DEFENSIVE RF IN BASEBALL

im sure that had no effect on OF defense !

Jesse has his pompoms out this morning !

        • “Do you realize Beltran had almost the exact same 2nd half numbers? ”

Do you realize that with the first half he had we would have a 5-10 game lead in the division and not forced to punt on a season after the ASG?
This 1st Half 2nd Half crap is just stupid attempts at justification for a belief….

A REAL GM would not care WHEN the production happened as long as it was more production than whet he had at the time….

I bet every player has a worse 2nd Half than 1st half because most tire out in the deep heat of August.

Doesn’t matter WHEN you scored those runs just that you DID!
What he does at the end of the day when both halves are tallied is what is important.

And what Beltran did was more than Baxter, Torres and Hairston combined!

      • We did….2009. 4th place finish
        2010…4th place finish
        2011 4th place finish

    • Which begs the question, why sign a guy for $20 million when:

      2011 4th place with him
      2012 4th place with him

      • If you recall, I was one who also believed trading Wright should be looked at. The fact that he wasnt even dangled out there shows me the Wilpons couldnt stand the fact that Citi would be empty without Wright in 2013 (might be empty anyway).

  • I don´t share the pessimism re: the time beyond 2013.
Sure, 2013 will be a season to establish the first wave of young pitching at the major league level (Harvey – Wheeler – Mejia – Familia – Edgin – McHugh – possibly others). Likewise, D´Arnaud should take over at C at some point during the 1st half. Their quality together will ultimately decide whether contending in 2014 is realistic or not.
The Mets have a projected 2014 payroll of 55 million $ as of today.
Even if the budget is only at a modest 95 million $ again, well below what it actually could be, that leaves 40 million or so to invest during the next off-season be it signing a free agent or two or – more likely – dipping into the impressive depth of prospects (24 C+ or better prospects by Sickels, a rather high number, plus several near misses that would have been deserving too) to trade for a missing piece or two.

That´s why 2013 is a very important season – even if contending is rather unlikely – barring an Oakland A´s 2012 type dream season where a bunch of young arms suddenly perform at a high level rather unexpectedly.

In a worst case scenario, the current wave of young pitching struggles and fails to meet expectations. The fallback is waiting for the next wave that will likely open 2013 in St.Lucie and should reach New York by mid 2015 in time to build a 2016 contender.
However, with the financial flexibility after 2013 where even the Mets without any SNY funds should be profitable, I expect significant additions for 2014 & beyond via trade.

If you´re comparing this to the Cashen era in the early 1980s, basically add 30 years to the schedule, so in this case, we´re looking at a season comparable to 1983 in 2013…

    • Damn, first it was 2014, now it’s all the way up to 2016???? Damn, Sandy alderson must be loving this passes he’s getting… Never seen a GM get 5 years to build a good team on the field Lol… Wow.

      • Look what he was given to work with. A depleted farm system, bad contracts that tied up much of the teams flexibility, aging stars and mediocre younger players and ownership that spent more time focusing on the taxman than the product on the field and who gave Alderson direction to slash the payroll.

Alderson got a 4 year contract in 2010 with an option for 2015. 2014 should be when we see if his plan starts to bear fruit or not.

        • Alderson inherited the 1999 Yankees compared to what Omar inherited !

Unless you think the 2011 Mets were in contention b/c of Sandy’s super sabermetric wizard powers

      • Lol, he inherited a good roster, not sure what you mean by depleted farm system when you have your whole roster full of farm players… while i get the whole financial issues, his deals have been awful to say the least, and his trades have been a tad questionable. to say this guy is some sort of genius or a good GM is beyond me at this point.

        • A good roster? Aside from Beltran on his balky knees and a contract that made him have to go, Bay who couldn’t stay healthy or hit, Castillio who was …. let’s just say didn’t play up to his ridiculous contract, Reyes who was one foot out the door you had one solid player in Wright and one young player with potential who also got hurt and hasn’t been the same since. Who else made up this solid roster?

In 2010 the Mets were 14th in the NL in on base percentage and 12th in slugging with a bloated payroll and no, no real help coming from the farm any time soon.

Look at Alderson’s history with both the A’s and San Diego. He had to do the same thing in Oakland and the Bill James era began.

Alderson was brought here to turn around a franchise that was out of control and getting worse, it was never going to happen overnight.

          • Beltran “and his balky knees”

            LMAO

Sandy inherited the top closer on the trade market, the top position on the trade market, the top SS on the trade market a Cy Young Candidate in RA Dickey, a young stud in Ike, another in Niese

please kindly sit down with your BS

            • You mean the guy who had to go to anger management classes after punching out his girlfriends father and then was had to undergo surgery to repair a ligament in his thumb he got in the fight and had to sit out the second half of the ’09 season? That closer? Don’t worry, he’s only been arrested once since his trade to Milwaukee for domestic abuse. Seems those anger management classes were money well spent.

You seem unable to comprehend the fact that Alderson was brought here with the specific purpose of reducing the payroll significantly. It doesn’t matter if you don’t like it, thats just the way it is and thats exactly what Alderson has been doing, getting rid of the monster contracts that Omar brought to this team (without winning a championship) and rebuilding the team with younger and much cheaper players.

They have been in rebuilding mode since 2010 and the finished product won’t be ready until 2014. You can keep pounding your keyboard fists of rage but this process isn’t over so you are in for more heartache until you come to grips with the fact that the Mets aren’t going to field a team that will have a chance to challenge for anything other than middle of the pack for at least a year.

            • You mean the guy who had to go to anger management classes after punching out his girlfriends father and then was had to undergo surgery to repair a ligament in his thumb he got in the fight and had to sit out the second half of the ’09 season? Boomer, sandy alderson signed frank francisco to be a met.. Go check out what he did while playing in texas and get back at me.

              • >>Boomer, sandy alderson signed frank francisco to be a met.. Go check out what he did while playing in texas and get back at me.

                Talking about K-Rod.

Don’t understand you point about Francisco. So what, he signed him. And?

                • So what? Is it ok to vilified Krod about what he did but because sandy signed francisco it’s ok to forget his past transgression? You are something else you know that.. typical sandy lover, anything the man does is supposed to be awesome regardless of the failure he has… Amazing, i thought most of you guys were into hybernation mode. guess i was wrong!

                  • What are you, 6? Stop with the Sandy lover crap. I don’t love any sports figure, not even the female ones. I’m just not dumb enough to not understand exactly what is going on with the Mets now and for the last couple years.

Bringing in Alderson signaled that the Mets were moving away from the Minaya days of signing high priced free agents and moving toward a structure that focused on rebuilding the farm system and rebuilding with young, cheaper talent. This is what Alderson did in Oakland and what he did in San Diego. It was widely reported that this is exactly why he was brought to the Mets. Some of you seem incapable of understanding this simple fact and keep pretending that the reason Alderson isn’t going after type 1 FAs and is unloading some of our veterans is because he is an idiot. He’s not an idiot. The Mets are broke and those are his marching orders.

K-Rod and his 3 year $37 million contract leave and are replaced by Francisco at 2 years $5 million per. Get used to it. This is where we are right now and will be for at least this season.

                    • Obviously Boom, you haven’t been here long enough, because you’d already have the answer to your question. Don’t attempt to debate with them. It’s a waste of energy.

          • Beltran and his balky knees…..

But lets jump for joy over D’Arnuad’s and his Balky Knees…

Consistency is severly lacking around here….

      • Sure you have.

Frank Cashen with the Mets in the early 1980s; Ed Wade in Phily in the late 90s/early 2000s; Bobby Cox with the Braves in the mid to late 80s; Gene Michael with the Yankees in the early 90s; Dombrowski with the Tigers in the 2000s; Doug Melvin with the Brewers 2000s.

  • Jessop, stop trying to convince Alex…he’s brain dead. When you argue with an idiot, they bring you down to their level and then win by expierience.

    • Sigh…. Kids these days…

    • Go suck on your momma’s tit, kid. You start the name calling, we’ll finish it.

      • You are among the most tuned in commenters here. I actually respect your insights especially on the minors. But comments like this only make you look like a moron and if this Murphy really is a kid then it makes you even worse. Why can’t you just cool it with these attacks?

        • Meeker, you must be new here. WE received this type of attack every day for no reason, and moderators to this day still do not give us any help nor the benefit of the doubt. Then when we attack back we look like the bad guys. It’s been like that for more than 4 years going.

          • You yourself referred to him as a kid. I’m assuming you are an adult. I’m just saying kids will be kids, but adults should always act like adults. This has nothing to do with how new I am here or past history.

      • WOW – classy

You’d think, or I was naive in thinking, that after the events of the past weekend in the tri-state area, some would come to the realization that life is far bigger then sharing opinions about a sports team.

        Disgusting……………

Save the “well he started it” crap for someone else……………..there is no excuse or reason for making such a comment……………none.

        • And yet once again, you come to a baseball blog about the mets, to butt in in a conversation you have no part of, just come in to rile or instigate because is either Maniac or Me in the conversation.. do you ever have anything baseball related to say? Ot your ONLY job is to come in here and attack us as soon as we make a comment? Practice what you preach for once…

          • You continue to be clueless…………..

  • So is D’Arnaud’s knee injury a non issue then? A catcher with a significant knee injury even before playing a game in the major leagues is scary. But if the knee is sound. I’m good with the deal. Hopefully by mid July Travis D’Arnaud is our starting catcher for the next six years.
    Solid defense… average arm.. .280avg. 15-20 HR 85+ Rbi hitting #6 I’ll take it!
    ss Tejada
    2b Murphy
    3b Wright
    1b Davis
    Lf Duda

  • Davidoff, Sherman, Puma are the biggest hacks around, and while they get the occasional scoop, they always deliver the news with a healthy jab at the Mets. I read them purely to glean any useful information, but mostly ignore their commentary.

  • This says it all:

Baseball people who have had the Blue Jays decline past trade proposals involving Travis d’Arnaud are “completely shocked” that GM Alex Anthopoulos has agreed to send the catching prospect to the Mets for R.A. Dickey, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reports. “He’s out of his mind,” an AL official said of the Blue Jays GM

Love this trade and share the sentiments of the Daily News reaction.

    • they also wouldn’t include syndergaard to get Gio last year

    • LOL. Ninja more than met his match.

    • I think the way the AL East turned out last season and is shaping up so far this season spurred Toronto into win now mode.

  • Am I the only one wondering why we are all going berserk over a deal that has yet to be confirmed by either team, whose players involved are still all speculative and also unconfirmed, and with players included in the trade that have yet to be named?

    • Almost always when word of trades pending physical or contract extensions leak out, the names turn out to be correct. There is no reason to think they are not. If they were incorrect, a source in either organization would have leaked that fact to a reporter by now.

All prospects are speculative but when you’re dealing with elite level ones, you at least have a better-than-average chance that they will work out. Dickey is somewhat speculative for the next few years too — though not as much as a prospect.

As for the unnamed players, they are reportedly not elite so it doesn’t matter too much who they are.

    • You are correct…until the deal is signed, sealed and delivered, nothing has happened.

  • Lets really examine this….

Josh? In New York, really, with his addictive demons, and the fact he seems to be getting hurt a lot, if he is hurt 75% of his contract which he probably will be then you cry and say bad signing.Huge risk.

Bourne? Sure Bourn is great defensively and steals 40 a year but he is now in his low 30s , signing a 5 year deal for 60 to 80 million is absolutely insane, and if he slows with age which most players do, then you say what a bad deal. Should have saw it coming. he will clog up payroll like Bay, Its a risk unless it is 3 years or less and they still lose.

Upton? Upton I like but his average is low and he strikesout a lot. Not sure where he hits in the line up as a perfect fit. 5 years 60 mill for a 240 hitter. Sure he plays good defense and steals 20 bags. But do they win because of him? Nope

Pagan ? He was always going back to San Fran and he was way over paid, again 4 years for a 32 year old, huge chance, I am fine with captain Kirk with a rightie platoon. Why leave a world series team for a rebuilding team? More money than 4 years and 40 mill is only way. No freaking way.

Victorino ? Clearly headed toward the downside of career, still can steal and play good defense but in his 30s, and again if it was a one year deal sure, or the piece that puts us over the top sure. Mets lose with him anyway. His average declined big time to.

Ross ? Does not even replace Hairstons production, they should bring back Hairston, why isnt Hairston on the list?

Ludwick ? Was always going back to Cincy, why leave a little park and playoff team to come to the Mets? For more money that’s only reason why, do you really want to over pay for Ryan Ludwiock? Seriously do they win with him?

Matsui ? Go away, sure he can play the outfield in Citifield

Swisher ? This guys wants a huge pay day and like 5 years, take him out of Yankees line up and out of Yankee Stadium Band Box and those homers plummet. He is already a 240 to 260 hitter. Two years from now if not next you guys would be killing Alderson for this deal.

Young? He looks like he ate a midget, He is a DH like Duda, do you want to see both of them running around the outfield

Mets are not winning with these guys on long term deals guys. Next year they will have money coming off and Wheeler and Harvey starting in rotation with Gee and Neise with more experience, and D’arnaud at catcher.. They will fill their needs then or at least some of them if it is a fit, and have the same payroll as this year and win. For this year i would rather seem them trade for a player like Mike Taylor on Oakland (just an example) with power upside and is cheap, than most of these guys on this free agent list. Oakland has a gluten of outfielders and they might be able to get him for B level prospects. He was a top prospect and has power potential and speed for 15 to 20 stolen bases. Sure he might sh!t the bed but its a no risk move. He gets league minimum, and offers upside. Goes right into right field and Hairston would be fourth outfielder or play right if taylor is horrible.

    • Then you will NEVER sign another free-agent for anything more than a bargain basement deal

almost every free-agent hitting the market for the 1st time is anywhere between age 28-32.

those guys will demand at least 4-5 years…and the good ones will be at the top of the pay scale

there is no sense paying Snow Wright to be the franchise face of a 79 win team

If Trading Snow Wright nets you a package that you can then use to either improve your club or trade for a proven player under 25, you do it.

I advocated Trading Snow Wright for a package, taking that package and trading for G-Stanton. who is at this point a much better power hitter than Wright and locks up RF for the next 5 years.

      • there is no sense paying Snow Wright to be the franchise face of a 79 win team”

        Wrong… 74 wins.

      • how come when you call david wright “snow wright” it’s not race-ist? but somebody doesn’t like angel pagan for his 2011 mets season and they are automatically a bigot? be consistent.

To be honest it’s likely the most race-ist thing said on this website repeatedly because there is no misleading context. We know why you’re saying it and you’re being blatant about it. You try to pin others down and say they dislike players for certain reasons – yet they never say so, it’s just in your head. We all know why you call Wright Snow Wright so for the sake of the site and others reading,

I respectfully ask you to stop with the blatant bigotry and name calling and attempts to focus on the color of David Wright’s skin

        • Where were you when fonzie attack all latinos and called them ___cs?? By calling one person that you’re calling the whole r-ace no? Where were you when he said that then? Of course, you were nowhere to be found, now since damaja is calling your boy out then you show up and use the “Site” as the excuse for the defense.. Awful

          • Where was I when he did that? I was busy writing him a personal email reprimanding him after I deleted the comment from the chat box.

Quit acting like I accepted it. It was deleted and he heard from me about it and I believe Joe D as well.

So just as I asked him to never use that language on the site again, I am asking you and Damaja and whoever else to quit the snow wright stuff. If you choose not to, then please refrain from ever trying to claim anybody on this site is judging a player based on the color of their skin because your argument is inconsistent with your views on Wright.

            • “Doyle: If y’all don’t shut up, I’m gonna go out of my mind. Besides, Karl here is liable to bust his spring. He’s already off balance. “

        • Snow Wright has nothing to do with skin color and everything to do with the fact that the mets surround the nicest cleanest most pristine player in the history of sports with scrubs ( aka the 7 dwarfs )

The Mets want a wholesome clean product for your kids to look up to on their posters.

They make 100% of their marketing around 1 guy and pretty much treat the others like hired help

the mets have always treated the team more like a broadway show and less like a team meant to win

David Wright is the hero, the star of the show, the hard-working underdog who values hard work, eating his vitamins and saying his prayers !

Every year for Halloween he dressed up as Mr. Met and when he outgrew that costume, he just dressed up as HoJo

Rumor has it he still dresses up as HoJo for Halloween

We know who his parents are, who he went to school with, what he likes to eat with his cheerios in the morning.

Reyes? he is the attention-whore who we know almost nothing about.

Married….3 kids….and you cant name either his wife or anyone of his 3 kids….

if David Wright was married and had some kids….I am quite sure SNY would’ve been at the delivery room with a microphone, interviewing the Dr., Mrs Wright and David as he held his child for the first time.

Then if he goes in another slump, we can blame the kid

          • LMMFAOL….. This^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

          • Considering I met Katherine once, I am fairly confident that I can name her. But, thanks for the assumption. I can also tell you I have no idea who or if Wright is dating somebody.

            • LMAO

a quick google search pulls up Katherine’s name !

and I met her too….but Reyes didnt introduce me to her cuz he was too busy fighting with someone that tried to squeeze her buns ( this was the day after he signed with Florida )

The reason SNY doesnt reveal who David is dating is due to the fact that they want you to believe David Wright is saving his virginity til marriage. Showing his apt across the street from a strip club might tarnish that image. Thats why when he bought his apt, ( i’ve been to his building before ), SNY showed off his pool tables, his TV’s, the entire apt set up…

              Reyes?

Has a mansion in Long Island that you have never seen on SNY…

is he shy? Nope…he filmed interviews with ESPN there…and shot a movie there…and showed off his lovely family..

              like i said..

David Wright – star of the show
              everyone else – hired help

    • Ugh. Swisher. Makes no sense for the Mets on many levels. Anyone advocating for Swisher is out of their mind. For one thing, Mets would lose a first round pick to the Yankees if they signed him. That’s a no-no. Absolute no-no. Then there’s the fact he’s played in a hitters park and in stacked lineups. Put him on the Mets and at Citi and his production falls a lot. Then there’s the fact he’s one of the worst postseason hitters of all time. So if the Mets were lucky the next few years to get to the postseason, he’d be useless. Then there’s his ugly mug. Need one go on?

  • Awful trade. Best pitcher for unproven prospects. Tyler Kepner has it right: “Mets told their fans they don’t expect to contend for the next 3 years”. They are saying, Fyou fans. Mets fans should respond, Fyou Mets management.

    • This! (dedicated to srt)

    • This is far from an awful trade. This trade is ridiculously smart. The Mets aren’t going to win next year, so what is the point of keeping Dickey when they can sell high on him now to a team that is willing to give us two of their top 5 prospects?

Mets had to make this move.

      • The Mets aren’t going to win next year, so what is the point of keeping Dickey when they can sell high on him now to a team that is willing to give us two of their top 5 prospects?”

Again, then why the hell they sign wright to an 8 year deal!!!??????

        • I assume the logic is because the Mets are positioning themselves to contend in 2014 and Wright will still only be 31 yrs old

Too much risk to keep a 38yr old knuckleballer…only reason Toronto is paying up is cause they see an opening and are trying to win in 2013

        • They did it, Alex, because they know you hate David Wright.

  • Chatty, coming from a media type?

Toronto GM, judging by moves lately, is in a bind to deliver a more competitive, winning team after going with young starters last year and they got hurt.
Now Toronto has some durable pitchers in Bueherle, RA and maybe JJ to back up strong offense and better D with Reyes at SS.
I see this getting done because of pressure to win now in Toronto, sorry forgot GM’s name.

Hey guess what Alex and Jesse are feuding again, and I thought that Mondays would be less stressful :)

    • Chatty, coming from a media type?

That is pretty funny and ironic. Especially when it was these same writers asking Dickey all the questions.

    • The GM in Toronto is a Omar Minaya disciple

he replaced the Sandy Alderson disciple in JP Riccardi !

      Omar’s disciple >>>> Sandy’s disciple !

      • Anthopoulos actually was Ricciardi’s assistant GM. He was a scout for Montreal when Minaya was care taker.

Saying AA is a disciple of Minaya is like saying my mailman is a disciple of President Obama.

        • Alex Anthopoulos was hired by Omar Minaya after Alex approached him in the parking lot after working as a paid intern. Omar hired Alex for 25,000 as an asst..then eventually sent him to scouting school in DR while teaching him how to scout.

This is why Alex wanted Omar to come work with him in Toronto in 2011.

          ========================

Omar Minaya remembers pulling into the parking lot at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla., in 2002.

“It’s about 5 a.m. and here is this kid standing in front of the locked door wearing a shirt and a tie,” Minaya said Thursday.

Major League Baseball had taken over the Expos and Minaya had been appointed as the general manager.

“The kid is dressed nicely, but I’m thinking to myself: ‘What in the world can this guy want?’ He introduces himself as Alex Anthopoulos and says: ‘Mr. Minaya, Mr. Minaya, Mr. Minaya. I want to work, I want to work. I’ll work for free.’ ”

Minaya had taken over and he had Tony Seigle and not much more man power at his disposal.

The new GM took the eager beaver inside and began to get organized for his day. He told his executive assistant, Marcia Schnarr, to find something for Anthopoulos to do.

“Alex’s first job? Ordering new cell phones for our scouts,” said Minaya.

          • See Damaja, you’re telling half the story

            From his bio

A native of Montreal, QC who is fluently bilingual in English and French, Anthopoulos became interested in baseball in the early 1990s after seeing the Montréal Expos play at Olympic Stadium. After his father’s passing, he realized that he wanted to do something that he loved for a living. He proceeded to call several Major League organizations, looking for a foot in the door.

His chance came when he got a direct line to the Expos GM Jim Beattie’s office in Florida. He offered to work for free doing something he loved, and he was given his chance. He worked in the media relations department with the Expos, and moved to their scouting department in 2001. (RIGHT HERE IS WHERE YOUR STORY COMES IN)

In 2003, when the Expos’ days in Montreal were numbered, he accepted a lower-paying job with Toronto in order to remain in Canada.

He worked for the Expos for 1 year while Minaya was there. 1 year. He worked for Ricciardi for 7 years.

          • “then eventually sent him to scouting school in DR while teaching him how to scout.”

Sent him? Like saw talent in him and paid for a spot there?

No, they just validated he worked for them.

      • yea what are you talking about?

Anthopoulos began his baseball career with the Montreal Expos in 2000.

He was hired by Ricciardi as Jays’ scouting coordinator in 2003, rising to assistant GM following the ’05 season, adding the title of vice-president, baseball operations in January 2006.

So he worked with Minaya for 1 year in 2002 with the Expos. Beinfest and Jim Beattie probably had more to do with AA than Minaya.

        • Alex was sorting mail in 2000. He didnt become a scout until Omar hired him in 2002 and sent him to scouting school in 2003.

This is why he wanted Omar to work with him in Toronto.

          • Anthopoulos would strike up a rapport with renowned Expos head scout Fred Ferreira, who eventually invited him to Florida for another unpaid internship.

“Down in Florida, I was on the field every day,” Anthopoulos said. “They paid for my hotel and meals, but nothing else. Still, the internship allowed me to continue to learn and to take trips to the Dominican Republic and to Japan.”

Eventually, Anthopoulos got the Expos to sponsor him for a Major League Baseball scouting school. While the Expos did vouch for him, Anthopoulos had to pay his own way. But the experience was invaluable, allowing him to truly hone his craft.

When the Expos were taken over by MLB, Anthopoulos finally got his big break.

“In February 2002, I met with new Expos general manager Omar Minaya and two other people,” he recalled. “Since MLB took over the team, it was pretty much a skeleton crew.”

Anthopoulos was hired in March 2002 as a scouting coordinator, based out of Montreal.

“They paid me $25,000 a year and I was ecstatic,” he said. “I was living in my aunt’s basement and was coming to the end of my resources. It was a big break.”

In 2003, Anthopoulos was named the Expos’ assistant scouting director. But seeing the writing on the wall for professional baseball in Montreal — and knowing he didn’t have a visa to work in the United States — Alex made a tough decision that would ultimately pay off.

“The Blue Jays called and offered me a lesser role,” he said. “But with the uncertainty surrounding the Expos, I took the offer and moved to Toronto.”

            http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/Blue+Jays+roots+with+Expos/7163519/story.html

Stop trying to act like he worked with Minaya in the trenches and learned so much. I have no doubt that Minaya is a very good scout. You’re not gonna see me disagree with you. But to act like Anthopoulous is a disciple of Minaya is just a joke. Did he work with Minaya? Absolutely for a very small amount of time. He learned how to run an organization from his time with the Blue Jays… his 7 years prior to being a GM.

  • Well, I’m upset at losing Dickey, but I realize I’m probably clinging to an illusion about who and what the Mets should be in my image. I also think the Mets have really ill-treated R.A. in these last few weeks. Unconscionable in my opinion. Whenever you are a fan of a team, you just love rooting for players who are real people with real problems and also do great things within and outside of baseball. Everything about R.A. just makes him so much a mensch! This is what I hate losing, along with his fierce competitiveness. I suppose I’ll get over it, but it will take time.

The trade has the potential to be exciting for us down the road, but, obviously, not today. 2013 is likely to suck royally, and, don’t look now, but we have no true ace on our staff–unless Santana returns to pull off some miracle.

On the one hand, many of us have asked for a big re-build for four-five years. Well, now it’s here, but it just brings on lots of uncertainty. Re-builds never really proceed exactly how we would wish them b/c they necessarily involve giving up or trading guys you end up rooting for and really liking.

Whether or not I come off as completely wishy-washy, for the time being I am not going to approve or condemn the deal itself, but prospects will never equal proven winners at the moment they are exchanged, so only success or failure of this deal will be known in three-four years, and that’s a long time to wait for a Mets fan.

  • Good Trade!!! Just not use to this small market building.

  • You go, Emma.

    http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/40669544/
‘Perhaps the Mets organization is now so unused to positive attention that it frightens and confuses them.’

NY Times follows, also blasting the Mets:

Mets Show Gratitude With a Pitch in the Dirt

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/17/sports/baseball/r-a-dickey-deserved-better-from-mets.html?ref=sports&_r=0

    • Great article! Yes, yes, way to go Emma!

    • I just blatantly disagree. The Mets are not responsible for irresponsible reporting. They did nothing to “disrespect” RA and if anything have given him the opportunity to not only get the contract he demands but do so on a winning team. Both sides should just shut the heck up and get the deal done.

      • Well to each his own opinion, which is fine.
But my opinion on this over at TRDM still stands.
Mets PR sucks and has for a long time.

        • Oh their PR is awful. Just saying that all this crap about how they disrespected Dickey and he deserved better is just plain crap.

          • But those comments came AFTER ownership’s comments regarding their ‘concern’ that Dickey’s attention-getting-whore ways would affect his pitching.

So in essence, how about ownership just keep their mouth shut and let the GM they hired do his job?

            • Again, it’s a negotiation and neither side evidently was going to keep their mouth shut. I just think these articles making Dickey into some type of vicitim are missing the entire point. He’s a well paid victim and getting ready to be an incredibly wealthy victim at that.

              • Well, what was the point in the Wilpons bad mouthing Dickey? What goal where they trying to accomplish there?
                I wonder…..

                • Who knows if the “Wilpons” bad mouthed RA? What was the point in him voicing his displeasure? I am assuming it’s all part of negotiations.

                  • According to many outlets, the Wilpons did just that.

                    • Again, I am not part of the negotiations process but either way this idea that Dickey was wronged while being paid millions of dollars and now having to opprotunity to be set for life and play on a contending team?

                    • Most of the writers at the NYTs covering baseball are Yankee lackeys. Kepner should be dumping on Davidoff who did most of the dumping on Dickey — not the Mets or the Wilpons.

        • But my opinion on this over at TRDM still stands”

          What’s TRDM?

          • LOL…the ‘desert’, Alex.

          • Lmao… Ahhh… I see it.. THe real dirty mets..QUite fitting actually

            The

            Mets blog

            Lmao, :-D

            • Well, that wasn’t necessary. We’re not deserted over there in the desert – no pun intended. :-)

            • I know… It’s like the show the Real World. 7 strangers blogging, things start getting real in the TRDesertedMetsblog Lol…

              • We always enjoy the opinions of our registered users Alex.

              • You mean the 7 of you?!?

                • 8 counting you Alex.

                • I will do anything you want if you happen to find one single comment made by me in the desert.. One.. Matter of fact, i’ll become a blogger in there for a whole week if you do. I ban myself from here and go there for a whole week to boost your ratings.

                  • Alex, unfortunately I can’t because some of our early comments were lost when we switched from Disquss back to normal comments. So I will take your word for it that you just registered and never commented.

                  • Again, i could’vr lied about it and said i wasn’t register, but i did when you begged me to come to the site. as a favor to a long time nemesis i did register, but i never commented nor will i unless something drastic changes.. Plus, i don’t look forward to see comments from salty and co and a bunch of THIS to increase the comment total on an article..

                    • I still thought I recall having you and MR. Bill. I know Billy boy and TKFJ make quite a few. Regardless, no reason at this point Alex for you to continue to insult a site that does quite well. You don’t have to like me, I have said that for years, just leave the guys that actually work hard to produce a decent blog that has been going for 3.5 years out of it. Keep your personal attacks to me or the other members that come here and leave the ones that don’t out of it? OK buddy?

Now back to this trade? Do you actually give the Mets credit for a good move here?

                    • First of all, Mr Bill was my boy, but i never did any commenting there, i saw him here and we interact a little, he i am certain was there as he did tell me about your site and that he was a member, i did registered when you send me the link to register on an email, but i never commented.
Second of all, F*** the desert. You took shots and have taken shots to MMO and the CORE for years, also your little puppets do the same, so hey, you guys starter the war, deal with it.
Third of all, yes… I do like the trade because if we’re not competing and we are rebuilding, might as well get players who can help down the line and d’Arnaud is a good piece if he stays healthy along with the pitcher we got.. Now we are LOADED with good arms to trade for veterans and stars who can help ike carry this team..

                    • First of all that’s fine.
Second of all that would be one sandy hot hole for sure and I am pretty sure it would be uncomfortable but do as you wish.
                      Third I agree it’s a good trade.

      • So everytime it read a Mets team source just told me, or a top Mets official just told me, they were really pulling the quotes out of their ass? Sorry, I go back to 65 and since Wilpon took control from Doubleday he has been underhanded and uses the media as his boy toy.

        • Nope, of course the Mets at times use the media to meet their needs. However, the one article in particular went above and beyond inserting their own personal opinions about Dickey and the Mets aren’t responsible for that at all.

    • Emma Span is a lifelong Yankees fan. No wonder she lacks any objectivity on the Mets. She’s one of the last persons I would link to on a Mets blog.

  • Not sure what ‘wronged’ means in your context.

I was talking about ownership having ‘concerns’ with Dickey’s ability to concentrate on pitching with his new found notoriety. Come on….along with climbing Mt. K. in Jan, his book came out in April (I believe). Did we see any evidence any attention thrown his way during last season affecting him on the mound? The comment was absurd. There was something more behind that.

Even so, according to some outlets it was said SA wanted to sign Dickey and trade Wright. Wound up the opposite. So even if ownership ordered him to do that, why cast aspersions on his ability to be successful going forward? Isn’t that counter productive when trying to trade him???

PR at it’s finest. Only the Mets.

    • Oops, this was in reply to you, TRS. Not sure why reply button didn’t work.

    • SRT, sorry but I don’t think the Jays really care about what the Wilpons say about a player in a paper during negotiations. I don’t think it affects his trade value at all.

      • Obviously not, since this is a done deal. :-)

So that was just for perception – insulting the Mets fans intelligence?

        • Or like Dickey they can’t keep their mouths shut during a negotiations or it was something that was said without context to make a bigger story? Again, I think we are reading too much into it.

  • Damaja I think they should have traded Wright as well, but i also understand why they kept him. They will try to win within the next two years number one. Number two he is going to be the all time Mets best position player most likely finishing his career with the Mets. I think the deal is to long but it is done. He still should be pretty good for the next four years so hopefully everything comes together during that time. They are closer than most of you think

  • “If you polled the 30 current GMs and asked them if they would trade Carlos Beltran and R.A. Dickey for the three players the Mets received, it’s safe to say all 30 would agree with the Mets’ strategy,” an NL executive said.” — NL exec.

yes, the moron commenters here know way more these guys lol.

    I laugh.
