Cody Ross Agrees To 3-Year Deal With D’Backs

cody ross red soxCody Ross has reportedly agreed to a three year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The free agent outfielder had been on the Mets radar, but as Craig Lerner wrote this morning, he was far removed from the Mets price range. No details yet on the dollars, but it could be around $26 million or thereabouts.

With the righthanded outfielder now in the ranks, the Diamondbacks now have a surplus of outfielders it seems with Justin Upton, Jason Kubel, Gerardo Parra and Adam Eaton all in the fold.

This could be a prelude to a Justin Upton trade, possibly to Texas? (Get that thought out of your head Mets fans, although it’s perfectly okay to dream.)

Ross, 31, batted .267/.326/.481 with 22 homers in 476 plate appearances for the Red Sox last season, and mashed lefty pitching to the tune of .295/.373/.636.

I can’t get the song Another One Bites The Dust out of my head.

  • Sweet! Upton and Figgy to the Mets!

  • good for him, we have a guy who can easily come up with this stats if he would have 476 PA , his name is Hairston

  • Missed opportunity and now Hairston becomes the object of a bidding war which the Mets will lose.

    • GOOD!! Hairston isn’t worth it.

  • By next week the all powerful and all knowing sandy will have nothing but minor league fodder to fill the 10 empty spots on the 25. LMAO, wholesale changes! And as for the $20 million he had to spend? Keep the change you filthy animal.

    • Exactly………When Danny Knobler of CBS Sports was asked by a Mets fan whom he thought would be a good fit for the Mets, Knobler replied……”anyone who is CHEAP is a good fit”

—Last year, super agent Scott Boras said the cash-strapped Mets and Dodgers were shopping in the “fruits and nuts” section of the supermarket during free agency. Asked yesterday about the Dodgers’ shopping potential — under a new, wealthy ownership group that includes Magic Johnson — Boras said: “I think they bought the store.”

Boras was then asked in what aisle the Mets are shopping.

“I think the Mets, maybe the best you can say, they might be in the freezer section,” Boras said. “But there’s a lot of good, long-standing products they can acquire.”

Boras’ comment was relayed to Mets general manager Sandy Alderson by The Post.

“Freezer burn is something I’m familiar with,” Alderson said.

Hardy Har Har Alderson another smug unfunny smarta_s remark. Everyone is aware how cheap the Mets have become….Small market teams are outspending us…NYC is the biggest baseball market in the world. Boras said it right when he initially called the Mets thrifty. No one wants these Bozo’s to sign some big ginormous free agent to a $100M deal.

Any Mets fan looking for Sandy to improve this team this year or next is California Dreaming.

Most teams are thinking Playoffs or Bust…while the Mets are Prospects or Bust.

  • This market is completely out of hand. Sit it out.

  • How is this Mets news? Just because a hot dog vendor tells Mike Puma the Mets are interested in Ross, it doesn’t make it so. I’m sure nobody really believes the Mets were ever adding a significant piece this offseason. We’re still dismantling and slashing payroll. The rebuild has yet to get underway at the major league level. We’re talking 4-5 years just as it took Frank Cashen.

  • There is still time in the offseason but every day is seems more and more like the emperor has no clothes!

  • I’m predicting the Mets have a 5 year run of making the playoffs in AAA.

  • Ross was not worth 3 years and certainly not that much money. I don’t blame Alderson for sitting this nuttiness out.

Still not sold on Hairston either. Despite hitting 11 HR, he only hit .223 at Citi Field. That is not worth a bidding war.

Salaries for most people are stagnant and unemployment is still high, yet baseball is a thriving industry? Citi Field certainly wasn’t, but I suppose the ridiculous TV income is a big part of it.

Pick up a AAA FA and hope for the best.

  • Ross not worth money/years he got. He hit 39 of his 57 XBH last year at Fenway. .298 at home vs. .232 on the road…

    • You could say that about any free agent at any position since Alderson took over. They all are not worth it but Sandy is worth every penny of his own 4 year $20 million deal.

Multiyear free agent deals under Alderson DJ CarASSco and Frank FrancSUCKo.

      • Do I detect a bit of frustration?

  • Don’t panic fellow Met fans.We have Cowgirl, oops I mean Cowgill !

    • I’d rather take a risk on him for 1 year than Ross for 3. Red Sox “power hiters” haven’t exactly had a smooth transition to the Mets as the Green Monster inflates the 2Bs and homers.

      Ross (home) – 13 HRs, 25 2Bs
      Ross (away) – 9 HRs, 9 2Bs

  • Puppy dogs! Wilpon’s and Alderson’s bitches! Everybody that signs elsewhere, “Oh he was too much, we don’t need him, I’d rather have and d-bag instead”. What a bunch of used up bitches! Wilpon loves you all. Good puppies!

    • “Woof woof woof woof woof woof woof.”

Spot okay with no lousy Free Agents.

“Woof Woof woof woof woof woof woof, woof woof woof woof woof.”

The General Manager has little effect on me, no matter who it is.

      “Woof woof Woof!”

      Let’s go Mets

      • So gorgeguy is Sandys DOG, Buddy? Good to know makes sense

Good DOG Lap up everything Sandy gives you…

        • Gorgeguy has a life and doesn’t let a GM ruin his day/life. I’m going to vote for the Mets if they stink or if they win.

  • I would trade for Gerardo Parra now in a heartbeat. Can be an everyday centerfielder and rakes in Citi Field.

    • I love the idea of trading for Parra. Although I think they love him in Arizona. I bet they move Kubel and/or Upton and then just go with Parra and the kids in the OF. Texas has got to be desperate right now. I think they might finally give in and move Profar or Andrus for Justin Upton.

      • Rangers wont trade Profar theyd move Andrus. Unfortunately I dont think Arizona needs either now since they just traded for Didi.

      • Something tells me they don’t really wanna trade Upton, especially since they got their short stop. Or at least they hope they did. They would probably be less inclined to trade Parra than Kubel. Unfortunate. But I would definitely inquire.

  • Can we please end this fascination with Scott Hairston? The guy had what for him was a career year in–surprise–his free agent walk year and even during a solid season never really proved he is more than a bench player who can be effective in short spurts against righthanded pitching. You want to admit that we’re giving away the 2013 season? Then go ahead and sign Hairston as one of your starting outfielders. If he’s simply being added for the bench then he’s not worth a two-year deal. We should be forgetting about these borderline bench players and try to come up with creative deals for Ethier or Upton. We now have the prospects to make that kind of trade and the money coming off the books next year to afford it.

    • Tom Terrific, I couldn’t agree with you more!!! I liked Hairston as the 4th outfielder and righty bat off the bench but if he’s a ful timer or even am major platooner (say 400+ ab’s ) his wharts will be exposed big time!!!

On Sandy, I can’t say I endorse everything the man has done or that I fully trust him yet but I do like the fact that he is very secrative with the media as far as giving away exactly what he’s doing. He’s very “Old School” in what he shares and I appreciate that.. Many of these modern GM’s feel that TV face time is a job requirement (see Steve Phillips) but Sandy almost views the media as a necessary evil. The sarcasm is just his style. I’m a long time NY Football Giants’ fan and there was no bigger gruff sarcastic A**hole than Parcells. He is now totally loved. The only person that was perhaps a bigger A**hole with the fans and media was George Young (If he was alive today he may have been diagnosed with Aspargers). SA appears to be (for me at least) from that same old school.

  • If Sandy wanted Justin Upton then he can have him. Arizona is starting Chris johnson who was acquired mid season and performed well at 3rd. A deal involving Flores and Syndergaard would get the deal done but not sure Sandy would want to make that deal. I would pull the trigger, but Im probably dreaming.

  • Would Parnell, Murphy, Flores, and Mejia be sufficient enough to get Upton? I think at least an attempt should be made at this point. Parra is the only other fit I see from Arizona. Kubel strikes out a ton and plays bad defense. Parra has gold glove defense, can swipe a bag and possibly hit 290 with 10 homers. Maybe 15 to 20 stolen bases.

  • Why on earth would Cody Ross want to consider the bottom feeding Mets?

  • HAVING HEARD THIS NEWS LATE LAST NIGHT A SORT OF EPIPHAMATIC MOMENT STRUCK MY CONCOUSNESS JUST PRIOR TO FALLING ASLEEP. I ATEMPTED TO PUT IT ON PAPER TO A SELECT SMALL GROUP OF FAMILY & FRIOENDS THIS MORING AND I EXPLAINED IT AS THIS…
    ___________________________________________________________________________

YESTERDAY, I BELIEVE THE DIAMONDBACKS ANNOUNCED THE SIGNING OF F/A CODY ROSS; METS ARE REPORTEDLY INVESTIGATING NEARLY EVERY PITCHING OPTION THE PRESS CAN UINCIOVER, FROM LIRIANO(OFF MKT TO BUCS) TO PAVANO DESPITE NOT REALLY NEEDING ONE IF THEY CHOOSE TO GAMBLE ON WHEELER AS A ROOKIE STARTING 4/1 INSTEAD OF 8/1 OR WHENEVER. ALDERSON IS STILL ON ECORD PROCLAIMING HIS CONCESSION LAST SEPT THAT “THIS CLUB NEEDS MORE VETERAN MLB PERFORMERS” AS WELL AS HIS “WHAT OUTFIELD?” QUIP FOR LAUGHS COMMENCING THE WINTER MEETINGS. ALSO WE’VE HEARD LITTLE ABOUT DIAMONDBACKS MATKETING OF UPTON TO WHOMEVER WILL LISTEN AFTER TYHEY SUPPOSEDLY OFFERED TO DEAL HIM STRAIGHT UP FOR TEXAS’ SS PROSPECT.

TAKING ALL IOF THAT INTO CONSIDERATION, I CAN’T HELP BUT SUPPOSE THERE IS A PLAN AFOOT, BET KEVIN TOWERS, AZ GM, & ALDERSON AS TO AN AGREEMENT SENDING WHEELER TO AZ FOR UPTON. CERTAINLY FROM AN ALDERSON POINT OF VIEW IT WOUILD CONSTITUTE A BUYINGWHEELER LOW PAYING OSTENSIBLY A HOBBLED BELTRAN & SELLING HIGH RECEIVING AN ENTERING PRIME AGE 27, JUSTIN UPTON.
THERE IS CERTAINLY, IN MYSELF AN INCLINATION TO THINK IT WOYULD HAVE TO TAKE MUCH MORTE THAN AN UNPROVEN ACE PROSPECT; BUT THEN I CONSIDER HOW MUCH MORE VALUABLE A STUD PITCHER IS THAN AN EXCELLENT SS PROSPECT. WHO KNOWS? I SURELY DON’T, IT’S JUST PERHAPS WISHFUL THIBNKIBNG; BUT IT’S DEFINITELY AN INKLING I HAVE OF WHAT MAY BE AFOOT AS STARS SEEM TO BE ALIGNING, OTHERWISE THERE SEEMS TO BE ZERO SENSE OF ANY URGENCY ON BEHALF OF ALDERSON TO SHORE UP WHAT HE’S ALREADY IDENTIFIED AS A LAUGHINGSTOCK PIOTENTIAL SITUATION. SURELY, A HARVARD GRADUATE HAS MORE OF A SENSE OF NY PRESS VENOM THAN TO TOTALLY IGNORE SUCH A PROBLEMATIC ISSUE WHILE WHISTLING IN THE DARK.

BTW, FOR THE RECORD, I’VE MADE THIS UP IN MY OWN HEAD, HAVE READ NONE OF IT RUMORED ANYWHERE BE IT A VALID PRESS SOURCE OR BLOG SITE.
