Mets On Verge Of Trading Dickey, Blue Jays Travis D’Arnaud A “Must Have”
Update 9:00 PM
Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com is now saying that Blue Jays top Prospect Travis D’Arnaud, who is also ranked #11 overall by MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo, is being heavily rumored to be in the deal for Dickey.
Update 7:15pm:
Andy Martino of the Daily News is reporting that Travis D’Arnaud was a “must have” at the winter meetings in a potential deal for Dickey.
According to sources of MLB.com’s Anthony Dicomo’s, Dickey will remain a Met for at least one more night, citing that a deal is unlikely to be completed this evening.
Keep it locked, as the news on this could change by the minute!!!
Update: 6:00 pm:
The Rangers are out on Dickey, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports and they never offered Mike Olt and pitching prospect Cody Buckel.
The Blue Jays will not trade both center fielder Anthony Gose AND catching prospect Travis D’Arnaud for Dickey,
Matt Cerrone speculates that the Mets must have a good offer from the Blue Jays, however they’re still talking with at least the Angels and Orioles, so the deal isn’t done. Cerrone also is reporting that the Blue Jays are willing to deal J.P. Arencibia and Gose in a deal for Dickey and would prefer Niese for D’Arnaud.
According to MLB Network, one high-ranking executive of a team that pursued Dickey says that he believes Dickey will be traded to Toronto.
Original Post 12/14 4:17 pm:
The Toronto Blue Jays have pulled into the lead to land Mets starter R.A. Dickey. Andy Martino of the New York Daily News reported on Twitter that trade talks intensified yesterday, and Ken Rosenthal and Jon Heyman are now reporting that the Mets have said they have an acceptable trade offer in hand, but are looking to try and increase the offer if possible.
Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that the Angels, Orioles and Rangers appear to be the other three teams involved.
The Mets have a strong interest in dealing with the Blue Jays due to their over abundance of catching depth. The Mets prefer Travis D’Arnaud who is the Jays top hitting prospect, batting .333 with 16 home runs, and 52 RBI in 279 AB’s last season. The Blue Jays would like to trade J.P. Arencibia instead, who hit 23 home runs in 2011 and 18 in 2012. The Mets may also have interest in their young center fielder Anthony Gose as well.
ESPNNewyork.com’s Adam Rubin reports that a deal could be done today.
Hold onto your seats we may have breaking news anytime now. Keep it locked into MMO for the latest, we will keep updating this story as news breaks.

He doesn’t want to sign an extension with Toronto, I heard… I don’t blame him. I’m a little sad here.
This could be very bittersweet.
Here we go… https://mobile.twitter.com/Joelsherman1/status/279688885884305408 Sherman believes Dickey might be holding it up.
And that’s why the Mets should sign him to an extension without a no-trade clause. Then, he becomes a much more tradeable commodity.
Dumb Acesssss.
Guess no D’Arnaud, still good trade, Gose is new long term answer in center, extremely fast, good defense, hits lead off, Arencibia gives some pop from catcher, both young and controllable. Now add a right fielder and stack the bullpen buddy. Oh who us gonna take Dickeys spot?
They need to get more than just JP and Gose. Like a high upside lower level guy. Fulmer-esque.
As for Pitcher, sign Lannann. He can place hold until Wheeler gets here or Santana falls apart.
agreed if this happens they need to go out ASAP and get at least 1 legit corner RH hitting OF, though with the current roster, getting 2 primarily platoon guys could actually work out well, assuming baxter and Duda are still kicking around in the mix.
I’d focus on Ross. If you can get him to go 2 years at a higher dollar amount, that would be stellar, but I’d go 3 years on him if needed. He can play all 3 spots, if memory recalls.
Hairston, not Ross. Better numbers and less money.
Arenciabia looks like a back-up catcher to me and Gose doesn’t look to be ready. If RA’s refusal to extend with Toronto stops this deal then I am an even bigger fan of his as he is protecting the team from the inept dudes in the FO
If its Arencebia and Gose for Dickey…………No Thanks!
Id rather talk to Rangers for Olt and another piece or Angels Trumbo….Gose Arencebia arent difference makers nor potential difference makers Alderson promised!
Any catcher they can get is better than Thole.
Arencibia and Gose would suck. I’m sorry, but look at the strikeout rates….awful.
They are both garbage at the plate.
Kill it, R.A.!!!
Ken_Rosenthal
Source: #Rangers no longer involved in Dickey talks. And did not offer Olt and Buckel to #Mets.
https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/279703719619203072
Kill the deal R.A. we are being offered garbage
Gose at least plays phenomenal D and can burn. Arencibia blows.
Sandy and the Wilpons really disgust me with the way they spoken to Dickey about the contract extension. Angry Met fan x20? Oh Yeah if he’s traded.
Ditto. The way they’ve handle this is disgraceful. Disgraceful.
Trading Dickey is breaking my heart. This is worse than trading Seaver who asked to be traded. Dickey wants to be here for remainder of his career.
Well said. I realize its a business, but I’m going to be so angry if they trade R.A. If we can get a d’Arnaud I’ll understand… hell, even Dickey can understand that. But, for some crap like arencibia and gose, the front office will be damaging this franchise.
Hi Chi,
It’s times like this that I wish R.A. was more of a dick-head so trading him wouldn’t be tugging at my heart.
Here’s the thing…
If the Mets signed RA to a 2-year extension at his asking price and, say, paid 6m more than they would normally to retain him, they would increase their chances of acquiring someone like d’Arnaud as opposed to Arencibia because Toronto would control RA for 3 years instead of one.
But that would make too much sense, now wouldn’t it?
The Mets best get back D’Arnaud plus if the partner is Toronto.
I doubt it, though it would be awesome. Anthopoulos is way too smart to do that.
Like on the the previous posters said, hopefully there’s a high-upside prospect in there too. Aaron Sanchez maybe, RHP prospect.
gotta love the hot stove rumor mill. 3 straight posts, all speculating on a different team being the one. Though if they are all involved, it certainly ups the odds of one of them breaking the bank.
at least something is happening.
If I went to the sports book in Vegas six weeks ago and said I want to put a fin on RA and Reyes playing for Toronto in 2013 they would take my money and give me directions to the nearest mental health facility. Seriously though, if we pick up an Ott or a Trumbo like guy what happens to bad boy Valdespin and who is higher on the depth charts Nuwenheis, Baxter or Duda?
One would hope they could somehow flip the rest of the flotsam to bring in BP help. Maybe even that RP from CLE. Not Perez.
that goes back to the domino theory. Once Dickey topples, there have to be a lot of follow-up moves happening to balance out the roster.
Assuming they get a starting C and everyday CF out of this, they will be left with 1 or 2 RH hitting OFs (reasonably one that could play everyday if needed, and the other a platoon guy), and a couple of live arms for the pen.
and 1 more SP. Shoot for Lannan maybe?
If it is Arencibia and Gose at least they can put a lion’s share of the 20M budget to Cody Ross and field a major league lineup for a change.
have you seen Cody Ross’s numbers outside of Fenway? Ross at his asking price would be Bay 2.0 all over again are we really going to go that route again.
Well, OK….ANY competent outfielder.
Cody Ross numbers are not as good as Scott Hairston’s and he won’t cost 20 million. He made 1.1 million in 2012.
I’ll be a sad, sad panda if any of the following are Mets next season at the expense of Dickey: Trumbo, Bourjos, Arencibia or Gose. Gose is the exception if he’s the extra piece. But if he’s the centerpiece of the return, I’ll be very unhappy.
Sure, Gose and Arencidia have there flaws, but how many young controllable catchers can hit 25 homers? Gose stole over 70 bases twice in the minors. Kid can burn, and he can go get it defensively in center. I am confused how they are garbage. Mets need to make this trade. I prefer D’Arnaud but if they can get a pitcher with Gose and Arencidia it is a no brainer.
“but how many young controllable catchers can hit 25 homers?” His high was 23 homers, and that came in Toronto’s very hitter-friendly park. You think that’ll translate to Citi Field? And power is all he provides. He can’t hit, he can’t catch and he can’t run.
They aren’t garbage, but there’s no way that they are worth the same as Dickey.
Dickey was the best pitcher in baseball last season, and was flat out dominant pretty much all season long. There were games last year when he was just unhittable. You don’t trade a guy who performs like that for two potential complimentary pieces.
Also, let not forget that Dickey is a class act, a tremendous competitor, and a mentor to the younger pitchers on this team.
There are no adjectives strong enough that could describe how bad of a trade that will be for us.
Hi Vinny,
You are 100 percent right in all that you say. As much as I would love to get d’Arnaud from Toronto and no matter how logical the arguments are about how it could possibly make the team stronger and add to the youth movement – I don’t want it at the expense of not seeing R.A. continue pitching in a Met uniform.
Oh yes, in time if d’Arnaud turns out to be anything close to his expectations fans will slowly forget the pain of having to give up R.A. in return. But, just like with the Beltran trade, that is going to put an awful lot of additional pressure on top of the rookie’s shoulders.
But, as many point out, if one wants to look in pure terms of what is best for the team, having a Cy Young Award winner who one can count on every fifth game – not just to win but to also stop losing streaks or (hopefully) deal with the pressures of a late season and even post-season game (though unlikely – wah) is in the best interests of the team as well. And his guidance with those young pitchers would continue to be of tremendous value.
All those to consider from the cold and objective world. From the point of the Mets just making us feel good – and let’s be honest, a player like R.A. that could make fans feel that way even during these dismal times when the very foundation of our loyalty is being tested – it’s a no-brainer.
I also wonder how those who are talking about how good it could be if we trade R.A. at this time will feel once a deal is actually done and the reality sinks in that R.A. is no longer a Met.
We should try for trumbo
Mike Trumbo is Italian for Lucas Duda
Lol good one.
According to Andy Martino
Per sources, D’arnaud was a “must have” during winter meetings for deal w TOR to happen. Unclear whether its Mets or jays who will blink on that
https://twitter.com/MartinoNYDN/status/279735727896530944
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It has to be the Jays Arencebi/Gose should be a no go…not one of them are difference makers and Gose while extremely good defensively leaves a lot to be desired with the bat. Arencebia is a power hitting catcher with an OBP below .300 ………PASS
There is NO WAY they accept a JP and Gose package…it just isn’t likely; especially when RA is willing to sign for so far under market. If its Toronto, I expect that Toronto is going all in and Giving up D’Aunard.
Think, Texas offered a potential 30 homer guy in Olt, bats righty and they say no for a crappy OBP catcher with pop and a so-so CF’er? No way. This deal, if done, is for the good catcher.
I bet Toronto wants to sign him to an extension first though in order to give up the better catcher and RA might just be holding this up. This could turn ugly!
Gose on defense alone will be worth being a possible centerpiece. His projection basically is a LHH version of Michael Bourn with more pop. Sure there’s risk – like with almost every prospect. But on defense alone – even if he does’t hit – he’s easily a 2.5 WAR player. If he eventually hits, he’d double that. He was a top 50 prospect in Baseball prior to 2012 and improved ( while losing Rookie status in his late season trial). He’d benefit from a couple of months in Vegas though.
Arencibia isn’t sexy but a very average C in every phase of the game – which’d be a huge upgrade vs. the below average catchers of the past 5 years. If the Mets had just had average outfielders and catchers in 2012, they’d have finished over .500.
Of course, RA would / will certainly be missed.
And if this deal happens as the Mets build towards 2014 / 2015, I’m taking the Blue Jays as my 2nd favorite team with Reyes & RA leading the way…
This is very disheartening. Only the Mets manage to get rid of batting champion and Cy Young winner in back to back seasons. Pitiful..
I have no doubt Sandy will somehow eff this up.
Why should Dickey sign an extension to play in Canada? I hope he screws the Mets at this point. He owes them nothing.
If we get d’Arnaud then its time to party. d’Arnaud and Gose, even better.
Amen.
Disgraceful? To take a situation that’s completely legal and swayed in their favor, and play it out as such? That’s weird.
Listen, D’Aunard is the top catching prospect in baseball and basically major league ready. He’s a top 10 prospect in the ML!!
If they can get him for Dickey, who yes is a wonderful story and a great pitcher, they must. This kid could be a cornerstone player with Harvey, Wheeler, Niese, Wright, Davis, and Tejada for the next 7-10 years!!! If this gets done, the Mets are going to be a very good team in years to come with cash to spend in 2014.
Sorry, to get that caliber of player at a premium position is a no brainer. Well worth the wait.
Now, if its JP, I’m completely let down and that would suck big time.
Yeah, great story and great guy, but I take d’Arnaud ALL DAY.
This trade is going to back fire on them, all it solves is a big hole in our pitching staff.
Just lik the Tom Seaver trade did. Is our pitching staff that strong i don’t think so ???
I can’t take it anymore, I am praying they get D’Arnaud. Then I want to hear all the whining fans say, why hasn’t Alderson done anything yet? This is why!
No but how strong will it be in two years both with and without Dickey?
The pro Dickey camp is presuming he will maintain this level of production when the truth is most knuckleball pitchers drop off considerably around 40. Does that mean Dickey will? Not necessarily but it is something to consider and with the state of the Mets catching, it is a need. How many fans want another 3 or 4 years of Thole because there is nothing in the system that is even close to the majors?
So the potential for breakdown on RA’s part coupled with the chance to fill an organizational need has to seriously be considered.
Anyone who thinks Arencidia is worth being the major piece for RA better look at his major league stats because they are very similar to Lucas Duda at this point. Would anyone on here make Duda the major trade piece for Dickey? I dont think so. If Arencidia is in the deal, there needs to be two other pieces.
There’s no way in hell I’d do this deal without d’Arnaud. Arencibia and Gose better not be the return.
If it’s J.P. and Gose, the Mets got hosed.
You know, I think a lot of us would be able to accept the notion of being without R.A. had there been different owners and a general manager – ones that recognize they got wealthy because of the fans and didn’t thus spit on them. Maybe then us who truly wish for R.A. to remain a Met would put our emotions aside and recognize that for the betterment of the club, tough moves like this are sometimes necessary.
If only the front office showed us some heart and the owners made us feel included instead of excluded. Those who don’t see it this way, don’t really care or don’t find it important in relation to the team itself need not reply, I understand where you are coming from and respect it. I’m just speaking for those of us who do find both the ownership and general manager offensive and believe these things are important element when it comes to being a Met fan. That’s what made us feel different – and yes, better – than Yankee fans. So for us, the issue is actually way much bigger than R.A. – it’s actually a matter of what has been turning us off and away for many a year now – not just when Sandy came on board.
Wins and losses are hard to take but this – just like it was with Tom Seaver – is much harder to digest – for at least some of us.
Latest rumor is Travis D is in the deal if Dickey signs an extension. The rumor is TD, Davis and Noah Syndergaard for Dickey and Den Dekker.
Since I read earlier that Dickey would not sign an extension to play in Toronto…
Do you think this deal gets done without TD? Or Mets wind up not trading him to Toronto at all unless TD is included?
Well you know how rumors are and how things change. Heyman just said TD and Gose for Dickey, forget Davis, Syndergaard and MDD. And he didn’t mention an extension one way or another.
If I were the Jays, I wouldn’t give up TD for a rental. I’m not entirely sure that I’d give up TD for three years of a 38-year-old, either. But the Jays seem to think that their new roster can win a World Series in hte next year or two, I guess.
Why not just sell R.A. for cash? That’s the true motive behind all this anyway. And if Sandy wants, he can then go buy himself an outfielder with the money he gets back combined with the $5 million he saves in Dickey’s salary.
Whether or not there are those out there who would want to play for the Mets is not a real issue for there are plenty of those out there who would play for anybody if the price was right.
It would be something if R.A. and Reyes lead the Blue Jays back into the playoffs.
Just getting my anger out, nothing more. Thanks for indulging me.
Now Puma is reporting Ike is involved with Dickey for TD, Gose and Adam Lind. But he doesn’t say which side proposed it and how the other side reacted. So who knows?
Sorry, I fell for a fake twiter handle. Puma did NOT report anything like that and there’s no legit source reporting anything on Ike.
Thank God!!!! Dont scare me like that!
That would have led to chaos and anarchy if it were true. I hate those fake twitter accounts with a passion. Been faked out a few times myself by them.
Whew.
And you think some people would have better things to do with their time then reporting false rumors just to get a rise out of fans.
Ike??? I hope it’s not true. This is turning into a nightmare scenario. Dickey and Ike? No way!
Nope. Totally my fault. I’m checking almost fifteen different feeds almost at once. I fell for it.
Hi Exteem,
Might not be your fault at all. Jay Horwitz is probably feeding these rumors to anyone with a twitter account.
Kind of glad they might be. This nonsense briefly takes our minds off the real tragedy that happened this morning in Connecticut. Getting more frightening every day. God bless the defenders of our antiquidated second amendment who will give comfort to all parents and children that guns aren’t the problem, people are.
‘… guns aren’t the problem, people are.’
Amen to that.
Mental illness is becoming an epidemic in this country.
Hi srt,
And you know the gun lobbyists will blame the parents for not sending their children to school carrying firearms to protect themselves. I’m sure you know I’m saying that not to be funny but because I’m so disgusted that the U.S. has to be one of the few countries in the western world in which having firearms (not hunting rifles, etc) is illegal. Even with Connecticut’s strict gun laws, those guns were registered not to the killer but his mother and thus were legally owned. So it wasn’t a failure with any law, it’s again a failure of the way we live.
Twenty children between the ages of five and ten lost their lives and for all those other kids, they’ve lost their innocence at too young an age and will no doubt this is going to haunt both them and their parents, as it would most anyone outside that gun lobby.
I’m just completely sick watching the news on this, this evening.
I don’t know what the answer is but I’m pretty sure gun control and even metal detectors probably wouldn’t prevent a tragedy such as this. If an unbalanced person wants to get it, nothing is going to stop them.
Much like these RAD rumors we’re following tonight, so much of the earlier reported facts the news was putting out on this tragedy was incorrect. So many news outlets are just too eager to be the first reporting on this that they just start spitting out any and all rumors that are coming in. Qualifying it with ‘this is unconfirmed’ is ridiculous.
You think Jay knows what twitter is? Heck, at his age, he may not even have a cell phone!
Just a joke people. No need for the old folks to get their depends in a bunch.
That was also a joke. Please appreciate it regardless of your age.
Hi If,
No offense taken by us older guys. Am sure he had a man-child like Jeff help him out.
But what I’m really expecting is an email going out to us on the Mets mailing list immediately after any trade telling us how we’re going to surprise a lot of people in 2013.
FYI, the Jays AAA team last year was in Las Vegas, which is a hitter’s paradise. So, all of their prospects numbers are inflated because they played in that stadium. This was a stadium that was even able to make Brad Emaus look good. So just keep this in mind when your trying to evaluate their prospects.
Great point Vinny!
Hi Vinny,
Thanks so much for pointing that out. Did not realize that team played in Vegas.
Sorry Vinny, you didn’t actually check, did you?
In 36 home games in Vegas, TD hit .324/.378/.613. In 31 away games, he hit .343/.381/.577.
In 50 home games in Vegas, Gose hit .264/.354/.398. In 52 Away games, he hit .306/.378/.438
Vegas had nothing to do with it. Both hit better on the road.
Still, the PCL does increase hitter’s numbers:
PCL average: .278/.345/.430
IL average: .257/ .328/.389
Las Vegas is a notorious hitters park, and so are other stadiums in that league. Some of the other stadiums in that league are just as much as a hitter’s paradise as Las Vegas, so his away numbers could possibly be inflated as well.
So what you’re saying is, Gose was an average hitter for his league and D’Arnaud still blew the league away?
Fail to see an issue here.
I’m saying to just be careful not to overrate the Jays prospects because they are playing in a very hitter friendly league.
The PCL can make hitters seem better than what they really are. That is a fact. And all I’m saying is to keep that fact in mind.
Another thing to keep in mind is the other attributes both players bring. Both are top defenders at their position and Gose can make it back from the bathroom before the toilet stops flushing. No one ever brings that up. It’s just that this guy hit .260. And that’s all.
Same with bourjos.
Sure, I agree. They are both very talented prospects and bring a lot to the table. However, the league they play in is a VERY hitter friendly league, so that is something that shouldn’t be overlooked.
It should be kept in mind, but it’s not as if anyone’s expecting TD to hit .330/.380/.600 in the majors. Those people would be overlooking it. The fact that he dominated a league is enough for me. Everyone else in the league played in the same parks as he did.
I think the one thing that’s most certain is that Dickey and Johnson will be in the same rotation………
I’m glad to see Dickey wont sign an extension with Jays. He’s allowed to do what’s best for him too right? Good for you R.A., don’t let this ass get what he wants off the sweat off your hard work. Look out for #1 because they just want to give you the shaft..
For the record, Martino denies it(any reports that Dickey is refusing extension is false)… https://twitter.com/MartinoNYDN/status/279703581173624835
I don’t know what the hell to believe at this point
That’s the great/terrible thing about negotiations like this, especially with social media involved.
only guarantee is that he will be traded. Unless he isn’t. And it will be to the Blue Jays. Unless it is the rangers. Or another team that no one rumored about.
No need to check out MB now, so you are welcome.
My WAG, based on nothing but a gas bubble, is that a deal will go down to some completely unexpected team like Atlanta or the Yankees. Unless it doesn’t.
To Vinny’s point:
Gose batted .286 last season in Vegas. Before that he never batted higher than .262 in his five years in minors. His OPS was 50 points higher than his career mark.
d’Arnaud’s slugging of .595 was over 120 points than his career mark. His OPS was 160 points higher in Vegas!
RED FLAGS for sure.
Gose it is only 21, so it is not unexpected or unreasonable to see him improving. He has been going up before last year in AAA too. D’A is also not that old.
Now, if they were 25 with 3,000 MiL ABs of the same output, and suddenly spiked in a hitters park, that would be a real red flag!
I hope we make the right decision here… I don’t want any busts.
Sally, one will certainly be a bust. That’s a fact. Prospects do not have a 100% success rate, it’s 50%. But knowing the Mets and their effed up karma, both could be busts.
Yeah I was kind of getting desperate for some young impact players. You’re totally right though, they more likely to be busts than live up to their potential.
The best thing to do before assessing this trade is to await the final package.
Dickey for Gose & Arencibia would be a fine & fair trade imho. Mets get a stud CF prospect with Gold Glove defense and Michael Bourn caliber upside offensively, plus a solid young league average C with 10 years of combined service time for 1 year of RA.
Dickey for D´Arnaud & Gose would be a great trade, though I can´t imagine that happens unless the Mets include something else that´s significant.
I also wouldn´t be surprised to see Thole included in this as Dickey´s personal C, especially if D´Arnaud is involved. In that case, maybe Buck heads to the Mets, also to keep D´Arnaud at AAA to open 2013, possibly. All sorts of options here. Wouldn´t be surprised at all if this ends up being a major trade with 7 or 8 players involved and going back & forth.
LHP Brett Cecil is also someone who could also be a nice fit here as a lefty for the bullpen or back-end SP btw.
In any case, while I´ll keep rooting for Dickey and adopt the Blue Jays as my favorite AL team for 2013, this has the potential to be a very helpful trade for the Mets longterm.
