No, he didn't say that. People are interpreting and presenting it that way, because it fits the story line.

If he did say that, don't you think the quote would have been presented in the original post? Usually, when someone makes a statement like that, we at least get see the tweet it appeared in. When it is a line that needs a little nudge in the right direction to fit the narrative, it doesn't appear. Wouldn't want people to see what was actually said and draw their own conclusions.

You want A.J. to be nice?! I thought maybe we'd want him b/c he banged 27HRs last year at 35, and b/c he's a very good defensive catcher. Other than those, no reasons...

Very disappointing how management is treating there Ace pitcher.
You might as well as trade him, by doing so all you-are doing is creating one area of need and creating a big hole in your rotation. They have a winning pitcher on there staff and there going to let walk away. I guess you don't deserve him, the fan base will be very upset and frustrated because we do deserve him a CY WINNER.
I think I'll root for the Yankees.

David Wright reduced the amount he was owed in 2013 as part of his new deal, Jason Bay deferred money as part of his buyout and Mets officials swear the payroll can inch slightly higher in 2013. Still, Alderson acknowledged, the Mets may not use the available capital -- in part because the prices on the market may not be worth it.

"Again, it's hard for me to predict what exactly will happen," Alderson said. "But we're not going to spend the money in mid-December just because we have it. We may spend it in January. We may spend it at some other time. We may not spend it. But the important thing is we have the flexibility to make a baseball decision about that rather than be constrained by sort of an artificial financial limitation."

2013 Payroll = $85 million!!!

Ah..I see. Thought that was your thoughts.

Makes no never mind to me what type of pitch RA throws to produce what he did last season. The fact that it's the knuckleball, and quite possibly on his way to being one of the most successful ever to throw that in the MLs, makes him even more unique and fun to watch.

I'm not knocking Dickey, simply using the terminology all scouts and GM's use to describe a knuckleball.

Here's an example.

It's draft day and all things being equal statistically, you have the choice of selecting the kid with the 95-98 mph fastball or the 65 mph knuckleballer. Who gets selected 100 times out of 100 times?

That's how GM's view Dickey. They'd rather take a lesser traditional pitcher like Greinke or Shields over Dickey.

Dickey's greatest value is only to the Mets.

The process is fine.

Obviously, 4 years at 40 million or 2 years at 25 million + the 5 million $ option is a bargain for signing Dickey. That´s basically between Jeremy Guthrie and Hiroki Kuroda money for a pitcher who - for the past 3 years - has outpitched them by quite a bit.

Sure, he´s unique.
But if Dickey were a 31-year-old SP with the same results throwing his fastball in the 91 to 93 mph range, he´d be looking at a 5-years, 90 milllion $ type contract easily - if not more.

Kyle Lohse is a good example. He´s 34 and reportedly looking for a 4-year, 60 million $ type contract which he probably gets from someone. Would anyone seriously bet on Lohse for the next 3-4 years vs. Dickey ???

The Mets know this. All it takes for them is to make Dickey that sort of offer and he´s likely to accept. However, right now, with teams losing out on Greinke & Shields, i.e. the other legit frontline SP on the market this winter - with all due respect to Lohse, Sanchez and Dempster who are more like # 3 starters coming off a pretty good season and will get more annually than Dickey is even asking for anyway - Dickey is a great bargain for 2013 purposes. So, either someone offers a legit package for RA. Or the Mets eventually sign him to a moderate extension, absolutely worth the risk.
