If he did say that, don’t you think the quote would have been presented in the original post? Usually, when someone makes a statement like that, we at least get see the tweet it appeared in. When it is a line that needs a little nudge in the right direction to fit the narrative, it doesn’t appear. Wouldn’t want people to see what was actually said and draw their own conclusions.

Makes no never mind to me what type of pitch RA throws to produce what he did last season. The fact that it’s the knuckleball, and quite possibly on his way to being one of the most successful ever to throw that in the MLs, makes him even more unique and fun to watch.

Here’s an example.

It’s draft day and all things being equal statistically, you have the choice of selecting the kid with the 95-98 mph fastball or the 65 mph knuckleballer. Who gets selected 100 times out of 100 times?

That’s how GM’s view Dickey. They’d rather take a lesser traditional pitcher like Greinke or Shields over Dickey.

Dickey’s greatest value is only to the Mets.

Obviously, 4 years at 40 million or 2 years at 25 million + the 5 million $ option is a bargain for signing Dickey. That´s basically between Jeremy Guthrie and Hiroki Kuroda money for a pitcher who – for the past 3 years – has outpitched them by quite a bit.

Sure, he´s unique.
But if Dickey were a 31-year-old SP with the same results throwing his fastball in the 91 to 93 mph range, he´d be looking at a 5-years, 90 milllion $ type contract easily – if not more.

Kyle Lohse is a good example. He´s 34 and reportedly looking for a 4-year, 60 million $ type contract which he probably gets from someone. Would anyone seriously bet on Lohse for the next 3-4 years vs. Dickey ???

The Mets know this. All it takes for them is to make Dickey that sort of offer and he´s likely to accept. However, right now, with teams losing out on Greinke & Shields, i.e. the other legit frontline SP on the market this winter – with all due respect to Lohse, Sanchez and Dempster who are more like # 3 starters coming off a pretty good season and will get more annually than Dickey is even asking for anyway – Dickey is a great bargain for 2013 purposes. So, either someone offers a legit package for RA. Or the Mets eventually sign him to a moderate extension, absolutely worth the risk.

Either way, I think the fanbase was hoping to see some creativity in trades to improve the team this winter.
