I wonder how much of Dickey’s deal was held up while he was waiting to see what happened with Wright?

He did say what happened with Wright would impact his willingness to sign earlier in the year.

And it really shouldn’t matter which side of the trade coin your on with Dickey…

Extending him is an imperative as once done his trade value skyrockets compared to what it is now.
I suspect we won’t hear anything until the meetings start and if past practices are any indication they will wait till the last press confeence of the meetings to annouce one way or other the status in Dickey.

Doing that will give them the entire meeting timeframe to look for trade partners and if not at least end the meetings on a high note for Met fans in announcing the retention of thier Cy Young Pitcher.

That’s why I said a 3 way deal. Maybe the Dbacks get Flores and then the prospects from say the Angels and the Angels get Dickey.

Seal the deal with R.A. too. Lets try and win a wild card in 2013, then anything can happen after that. The only times we win a World Series is by miracles and acts of God anyway.

Alderson is one who doesnt care about defense so I dont think he has a problem with Flores at 2nd as long as he isnt a complete disaster.

I was just pointing out that team’s and their situations can change radically in that amount of time. Practically a generation! at least for the Mets. The swing from 2002-2006 then 2006-2010 was huge.

When you are 62, one year seems like a lifetime. LOL But seriously, 2006 seems so far away. I agree that they have to maintain the long term outlook, but at the same time they will have make some smart moves to get this team in the post season sooner rather than later.

Thats a lot to give up for Upton but I dont think the D’Bags would take that deal…They want a SS for Upton they have reportedly passed on a deal involving Mike Olt of the Rangers and he is a better 3rd base prospect than Flores is at this point. And I think there farm is flooded with pitching talent…Bauer,Skaggs,Bradley,Meo….so Familia/Mejia wont be so attractive to them

But, I still hope the Mets hold onto Flores he reminds me of a young Edgardo Alfonzo that doesnt strike out a lot and makes consistent contact.

3-4 years is practially a generation though in MLB. IMO of course. Maybe not a super long rebuilding horizon, but far from what I consider win now, as in this year, 2 at the most.

so I would say 3-4 is a middle ground, where with a good move or 2 (ST pickup say) they can compete this year or next, but still have time to build more foundation for years 3-4.

ideally, they can do both (add the filler pieces to complete now, and have more key foundatin pieces (like a Wheeler) in place for a sustained run 3-4 years out.

beyond that, who the hell knows. Think of the difference from the end of 2006 and the end of 2010. 4 years, and it seems like a lifetime.

Flores is actually a good infielder (soft hands, good arms, good instincts) from all the reports of his SS play. The issue was always about his speed/quickness (feet), not if he could play the position.

so, that should be a huge leg up trying to move to 2B. Unlike Murphy who had to also learn to play MI, Flores already knows how, it is just a matter of will he have the range to do it.

I would like to see if they could convert him into a couple of viable young hitters too at a position of need. But, if they do get him back, a 2 year deal is very reasonable. They will still have plenty of options.

Every analysis I’m reading on Flores indicates he won’t be playing the OF.
Analysis is split 50/50 on whether he can handle defense at 2nd base. Some predict if his bat translates well to the MLs, his predicted mediocre defense at 2nd can be tolerated.

IDK…if they’re looking to improve, they’ve got to be involved in trades as doesn’t appear they have the money for decent OF FA acquisitions. Flores packaged in a deal might be a starting point.

don’t forget, Wright’s deal was also expiring after 2013 (along with Bay and Santana). So really, his deal is replacing his own deal, with that slight raise (or bay’s deal, same $ amount, so whichever way you want to look at it). Santana this year makes way more than either of those guys.

He played 24 games for the B-Mets so they are at least trying. As awkward as Murphy was out there, he wasn’t the nightmare that I thought he would be. If he is only going to be a singles hitter for now on 2nd is the right place for him but I’ve never looked at him as any kind of long term solution.

Agreed, what do they do with Flores now as well? Are they confident he can play 2B? Do they move him to LF or is he the first casualty?

I was thinking maybe about a 3 way trade that would send Flores, Dickey and Mejia/Familia out and bring in Justin Upton? Surely those 3 would be enough.
