well, they are not writing a check for $140mill. So a more appropriate way to look at is, “is this what a 17.25mill player looks like?”

compare him to the other top 3Bs that have gotten to a point of getting a FA deal, along with other top players are premium positions, and see how 17.25/year looks.

Look at it this way: would a 5/88.5 deal bother you (that is, is it OK for him to be an 88mill player?) since that is the same AAV?

Cabrera could not carry the team even with Prince there and dissapeared in playoffs so expecting Wright to carry team with current roster is totally dumb!
SA needs to bring in another RH bat for OF and at least improve BP and hope for improvement from Ike, Tejada, Cap Kirk because having a big contract don’t mean squat if you don’t have the pieces around you.
David carried team in 1st half along with Murph and RA but eventually the lack of talent around you exposes team which is what happened in 2nd half.

When bidding is involved the years pile up quick. 8 years is nothing compared to a 10 year deal. His annual salary increase is only $1.5 mil on average, and the contract ends before he’s 40. As far as signing him goes this was best case scenario.

Well if that were true, shouldn’t their target be the fans who have this distorted view of Wright and place him on this pedestal? But no, Wright is the target. So yes, they do hate him. And when the hate that’s spewed here escalates from baseball to character assassination…..that hate is deep my friend.

And it’s a little premature to suggest he actually WILL retire as a Met….
in 7 Years a lot of things can happen here….

At least if he does leave it won’t be because he went FA because we were too cheap.

Did any of you genius listen to Ed Coleman on WFAN this morning? Did you hear how Wright said that he did NOT want the contract backloaded so that when he is at the end of the contract the money would NOT be a burden on the team?

He’s a top 5 player at a premium position. He, Longoria, Zimmerman, if they get on the open market you’re probably starting the conversation at $20 mil per. Almost every team in the league would have at least checked in to see what he wanted if not gotten in on the bidding. Supply and demand.

The Mets will not take on a contract of higher value nor equal to Wrights new deal so he is the barer of burden. And it is a superstar deal 7year deals and higher are set aside for superstars. especially when you are titled the Face of the franchise and ambassador by the Owner. Matt Holliday is a superstar who was overshadowed by “The Best Player in baseball” in Pujols. Similar to how Beltran and Delgado shielded David Wright they are gone now and those 2 are the Go to GUYs so to speak for there respective clubs

This deal makes him the highest paid 3rd baseman he has to outperform his counterparts.

If the Mets want to alleviate some of that pressure they need to put solid pieces around Wright like the Cards did by having a Beltran,Berkman,Freese,Craig and solid pitching staff. If not then good luck to Wright.

SO RIGHT JDD……And to make matters worse, I don’t see Wright having the mental strength or intestinal fortitude to shrug it off when the boos start. It could very well send his fragile mind into a performance nosedive on the field……could get very ugly.

Nine years and never one disrespectful move from Wright. he came up amid all this hype and by and large he delivered unlike all the other top Mets draft prospects before and after him. He didn’t ever make the team look bad or put them in a bad light, in fact it has been the exact opposite. They say baseball players are not role models, lucky us, Wright has been a great role model. He has done everything that has ever been asked of him with no complaints. He’s a good soldier. Today he got his payday for all his work on and off the field which when combined has been immeasurable.

Honestly, it would take a ton for me to trade Niese. Only LHSP in the system and signed cheap? No thanks. Also that means we would have to rely on Johan and Dickey in 2013 and then have 3 holes in 2014.

I like Trumbo. Heck, I’d take any RH power in this lineup. I don’t know the market, and maybe this is just hoping, but I’d shoot for the stars. The Royals would be stupid to trade Myers, but if they offered him for Dickey or Niese, you’d have to jump at that right?

Here’s my opinion (not that anyone cares) on this contract. The money is not the problem, the number years is to me. If your saying that Wright held out so he could be the highest paid Met of all time I don’t agree. They could have signed him for $80 Mil over 4 years and he would have been the highest paid Met of all time. I look at the money paid to any one player as cumulative, not over one specific contract term. I would prefer to see MLB teams structure contracts that guarantee money on a certain numbers of years and options for additional years based on some sort of performance measures, IE…. 4 yr, $100 mil then yr 5 player option to re-sign only if certain performance level is met…yr 6 team option, yr 7 same as yr 5, etc.. I know this may not pass muster with the unions, but if these contracts keep escalating more and more people will be shut out at the gate. Maybe the players don’t mind playing in front of empty parks so long as they get their money. We could ask Reyes.
