Very good article regarding the “BEST” defensive 1st Baseman ever, great leader and clutch hitter. You see, you do not have to give up the farm for talent all the time. Sometimes it just clicks and you get lucky.

We totally smoked the Cardinals when we traded for Hernandez. Best trade the Mets ever made including Piazza trade. Great piece of writing.

In many ways the Hernandez trade was as pivitol as the naming og Gil Hodges as the Manager…

Both moves took a team who was not regarded at all and made them respectable.

Gregg.. You said the key word “SEE”. like you maniac, bayonne and others we got to SEE some of the greats play, and keith was amongst those players. The guy was a vacuum at first base and good with the bat.

Nice job Rob. Probably the best position player we ever had in terms of real leadership, consistency, offense and defense, and clutchness. High marks in ALL those areas unlike some other so called Mets leaders. Keith Hernandez was the best..

He and Straw are my favorite Met position players. Keith was the SMARTEST player in the league when he played. He was always the most plugged in player on the field regardless of who they were playing. It’s kind of strange how someone who now comes off as so hoity and laz a faire or booshie was such an intense player. I loved the guy then and I love him now in the booth.

One of the greatest met of all time…. And one of the best pure line drive hitters i’ve seen. It was a pleasure to actually WATCH him play, not look at his numbers, but actually play. Whether it was defense and/or offense, the man was a gamer. i remember his breakout season in 1979 when he won the MVP beating out winfield then..I knew this man was a star even though he was in st louis. Had not being for george brett, I would’ve consider him as my favorite player from another team..

Enjoyed the trip down memory lane.

Keith is very well deserving. He’s still my favorite Met player of all time.
And still get to enjoy him in the booth with Gary and Ron. Keith will occasionally say something that you just have to laugh at but he still knows his baseball.
