Mets Offseason Will Resemble The Last Two, Wright Negotiations Stalled

Mack Carig of Newsday reports that the Mets have little left in budget to pursue free agents.

With little wiggle room, a person with knowledge of the team’s thinking said the Mets likely will follow last winter’s free-agent blueprint, when they passed on a major signing in favor of spreading their limited dollars with several low-cost signings.

What the Mets lack in dollars for free agency they hold in chips for trades — if they choose to put them in play. But if not, Alderson and the Mets must rummage for bargains.

The Mets enter the offseason with holes to fill at catcher, the outfield, the bullpen and perhaps the back end of the starting rotation. But with upward of 80 percent of their roughly $100-million payroll already earmarked for returning players, a splashy free agent likely won’t fall into the Mets’ price range.

Meanwhile on the David Wright front, a team source told Mike Puma of the New York Post says that while discussions are on-going between Wright and the Mets, negotiations are “stuck in neutral.” Andy McCullough of the Star Ledger hears the same thing from his team sources and adds that ” It kind of makes you wonder about And Martino’s report yesterday that negotiations were intensifying.

  • Andy said this yesterday on Twitter:
“Heard today that there’s “nothing imminent” between Wright and Mets. Negotiations ongoing. Both sides keeping quiet on details.”

Doesn’t seem like it conflicts too much.

  • The Post reports one thing, the Star-Ledger another; who’s right?

It seems to me that nobody really knows and, to be honest, is nothing to worry about. If no deal is announced as we head towards Christmas, then there will be cause for concern. I still think the Mets will give Wright what it takes to keep him a Met even though I am in the trade him camp.

    • If your in the trade him camp as I am then the longer without signing the less likely. That is why a time table before the winter meetings is the only way to go.

  • Martino gets it wrong just as much as he gets it right…. The only guys I ever really believe is Jon Heyman or Adam Rubin.

    • I wouldn’t believe a thing Heyman says.

      • Neither would I. He makes things up.

  • This is the front office sending their minions out to leak conflicting stories. Its all just Alderson speak for we’re doing nothing. Smoke and mirrors.

  • It’s November. Do you know who your third baseman and number one starter are? :-)

  • Damn that David Wright for wanting more than $200 per week and meal money.

That’s okay. Maybe I can buy a Sandy Alderson jersey.

  • “a person with knowledge of the team’s thinking” which could be the janitor who heard someone chatting when they were in the restroom…

Then, after that pseudo-source, the next sentences contained a LIKELY and 2 IFs…

    Have to love the offseason.

  • Nothing surprises me with this organization. The Wilpons must have some long-term assurance that they can hold onto the team financially and find better times ahead while they let it rot at this time. Or perhaps even they didn’t conceive the disasterous consequences of their actions and are taking more financial hits than they anticipated. It’s like a catch-22 for as long as the Wilpons want to retain ownership of the Mets the more difficult it would be for the franchise to act in a professional manner.

The Wilpons, the team and major league baseball itself would have been better off had Bud Selig not intervened.

    • Nice to see the blame finally goes where it should. If I were the former Texas owner Tom Hicks over leveraged and he was left to fail: I would sue MLB and Bud Selig as the Wilpons and Katz were inthe same boat and rescued while he was left to sink and drown.

  • The only logical conclusion is Wright’s agent is throwing out a number so high it is scaring the crap out of Alderson and the Wilpons. Could be Negotiation 101 or it could be the parameters are giving the front office pause.
