Mets And Royals Discussing A Trade For R.A. Dickey?

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com has reported that the Royals have contacted the Mets regarding R.A. Dickey. At this point it is unknown how far the talks have gone, and whether or not any names were discussed.

The Royals are on the prowl for starting pitching, and would love to have Dickey headline a rotation that also includes the newly acquired Ervin Santana, and the recently signed Jeremy Guthrie. The Royals have also recently been linked to big names Jon Lester and James Shields. They have a ton a young hitting with players such as Alex Gordon, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, and Billy Butler. They have been a bit hesitant to deal those young hitters thus far, but for the right deal I’m sure they would consider it. The Royals also have young phenom prospects such as Bubba Starling and Wil Myers down in the minors.

The Royals have a surplus of hitting and are in desperate need of pitching. The Mets have a surplus of pitching, but need some bats to strengthen the lineup around Wright and Davis. This could be a match.

It’s obvious that despite the Mets interest in re-signing Dickey, they still want to gauge the trade market as well.

We will continue to update this story as it develops…

  • Please dont play with my emotions

    Wil Myers PLEASE!!!

    • The only prospects I’d trade Dickey for in there system is Wil Myers,Bubba Starling, Kyle Zimmer or a package of players like Jake Odrizzi, Adalberto Mondesi(Raul’s son) Christian Colon and throw in a Lorenzo Cain.

Dont wanna give up Dickey but would do it for the right price

  • I know that Myers has been thrown around as a name straightup for Lester or for Shields.

Honestly, a stud prospect like Wil Myers for Dickey…wow. I mean, that would be a really impressive return.

  • Hopefully Sandy has another Wheeler trade in him

  • Trade Dickey for Myers.

Trade Wright for a real SS..

    move Tejada to 2B

move Murph to 3B as a stop gap for Flores

sign Michael Bourn to a 5 year 70 mil contract….because if u had 120 mil for wright…u have 70 mil for Bourn

    Done and Done

    1 – Bourn – CF
    2 – Tejada – 2B
    3 – Murphy – 3B
    4 – Myers – RF
    5 – Ike – 1B
    6 – Duda – LF
    7 – Catcher
    8 – SS

    • You do know, if this trade happens, it’s just to appetize Wright to return to the Mets, right? If they shell out this much for Wright, there’s no excuse to bringing Bourn into the fold. Only thing left, besides getting BP help, is trade for Asdrubal Cabrera to play 2nd.

CF Bourn-SS Tejada-3B Wright-1B Davis-RF Myers-2B Cabrera-C Perez-LF Nieuwenhuis (putting him here because I value his upside and defense more than Duda).

    • If the Royals are going to trade Myers, they will do it for Lester or Shields, not for Dickey. But lest hope they do it, then, forget about the DW trade you are proposing and we will get this:
      Bourn
      Tejada
      Wright
      Davis
      Myers
      Duda
      Murph
      Catcher

    • I honestly wouldnt pay Bourne $70M not worth it IMO he strikes out WAY too much for a leadoff hitter with that price tag. He’s striking out at about 140-150 times a year…

IF the Mets were going to spend real money on a player this off-season which I doubt Id rather give it to Napoli or Swisher although i hate that guy…

      • BBLB, if Upton got 5/75, Bourne probably doesn’t sign for less than 6/100. I wouldn’t give Bourne 70 mil, either, so I’m guessing he’s not a possibility.

        • Exactly what would your price range be for Bourn?

          • I’m concerned about players who “finally” figure it out on the wrong side of 30, in a contract year, after as many seasons as he’s had. I’d give him 4/50 and when he gets double the money from another team, let him be their problem.

            • It’s the same kind of concern I previously expressed about Bourn, especially after Bay was thrown to the curb. I’d go no further than 3 years, $42-45 million.

              • You’re a smart man, sir.

  • Would the Royals really give the Mets that “monster package” they demand for Dickey? KC fits the description of what the Mets have asked for: Catching (Perez), high end prospects (Starling, Zimmer) and outfield help (Myers).

  • If only they’d be interested in both dickey and wright, and send us back a well enough package with moustakas and wil myers… I’d help build that bronze statue of sandy sitting on his hand at citi field

  • Royals get: Dickey, Thole, Swinden & Fulmer
Mets get: Gordon & Salvador Perez

  • Dan,

Nice informative article but would you please explain to me what constitutes a “surplus of pitching”? Last I saw the Mets pitching staff seemed to resemble – “The Walking Dead”.

    - Santana, Gee, Pelfry and that excuse of a bullpen.

    • Niese Dickey Harvey Wheeler familia gee Johan….

I’d give kc Niese to get myers

  • I would do that too, Niese is young and may get better then what we see now, but Myers is an A+ talent and we have no bats in our system as good as him.

check that, all of the young KC bats would be an upgrade over what we have in our system.

  • I enjoy watching prospects as much as the next guy but I fail to understand the apparent value of Myers over Gordon. Myers is a good prospect but so was Dallas Mcpherson.

    • Contracts.

  • You see, the problem with this post is that it’s informative, it’s creative, it’s allowed people to come up with all kinds of interesting and very real ideas to improve the team. Just about all are good, sound, trade ideas.

And that’s the problem, lol Since this is a very logical post that asks very real questions with posters offering very real solutions – IT’S NOT GONNA HAPPEN. Why? 2 letters = S.A.

  • I’d be shocked if KC gave up Wil Myers for R.A. Dickey – but stranger things have happened. If they would – I’d do it in a heartbeat.

  • A big mistake if the Mets don’t sign Dickey. A 15 – 20 game winner doesn’t come around to often.

    • I get your point, I think if you trade Dickey though for a potential star OF who is mlb ready in 2013, you gotta do it. I’m not saying give Dickey away by any means.

Here’s a fun fact about 20 game winners

Did you know that since 1983 only 8 pitchers have won 20 games twice?

Morris, Rocket, Viola, Cone, Maddux, Unit, Schilling & Halladay.

To do it twice would be remarkable in today’s game. I don’t think a 15 game winner is that special, 18-20 is where I get impressed…. not to say anything is wrong with a 15 game winner, but Dillon Gee won 13 games with a 4.43 ERA in 2011…

    • i agree Tony,

Dickey has pitched very good since the day he put on a Mets uniform. Who’s to say next year he’s not fantastic again? Someone here pointed out very wisely that he’s no normal 38 year old. He hikes, he’s an outdoorsman, uses his legs a lot so i’m sure he’ll be in just fine physical shape.

I think Dickey will do next year like he’s done the last 3 and that’s pitch very good. I think he post similar numbers like he did the last 3 years in the next 3 as well. And besides if they trade Dickey who becomes the ace? I like Jon Niese a lot but that heart condition worries me, and Santana? And are the Mets going to put that much pressure on Harvey right away?

There’s many reasons to hold onto their Dickey. The guy they should get rid of is Wright and use the money they would’ve wasted on him to fill many other holes with quality, hard-nosed ballplayers.

      • Bayonne – If I told you today that if you trade Dickey

You’d get an OF that for 4-6 years would average .282 average, 24HR, 91RBI, .804 OPS

        Would you do it?

      • Hey there’s no reason to be worried about the heart condition.

        1. It’s an arrhythmia that’s easily corrected by surgery
        2. He’s pitched fine with it for years
        3. There’s no symptoms after the surgery other than resting for a while (unless you have an idiot doctor)

A.P. bio taught me this stuff

  • The Mets / Royals seem an ideal matchup for a trade that would help both clubs. I didn’t want to earlier but to get Myers and pry some of KC’s other stud prospects, i’d trade Niese (whom C would prefer over RA (age, Contract $$’s & Years) + Mejia, Thole, Fulmer for Myers, Perez, Zimmer, Delino DeShields, Jr.

  • Niese aint’ going anywhere. i am telling you..if they get rid of Dickey they will be sh*tting on their karma…such as it is.

  • I want Salvador Perez and Lorenzo Cain, and would be happy with those two. Myers theyy won’t give up that easily.

    • True Teddy, which is why there is more to come from this. There must be. Cain is an interesting choice, and I find it odd that he has yet to get a fair shake full-time. He’d probably break out from playing at Citi. The Mets main objectives should be Myers, Perez, Cain, and Zimmer. The Mets would be making a huge mistake walking away from the table now. The Royals are only stalling and these two teams are perfectly compatible for a deal to be done.

      You’re looking at something like….

Dickey (open up a 72 hour negotiating window for KC to sign him to an extension), Niese, Wheeler, Familia, Montero, and Flores.

      • Hi. Are you saying Niese & Dickey + Wheeler, Familia, Montero, Flores for Myers, Perez, Cain, Zimmer? We’d jettison our MLB SP plus much of our top pitching prospects pipleline and get only 1 pitcher (2 years away) back. That’s too much. If it takes that much to get Myers and Perez fuhgeddaboudit.
i actually agree that it might be a shock and a deal-maker to trade both Niese & Dickey to the Royals. But i’d think that those 2 + a position player or 2 (Thole & Flores) would get a cluster of KC’s top and very good prospects–a combo of near-ready & 1 – 2 year away-types, like: Perez, Myers, Cain, Zimmer, Ventura, Odorizzi, Delino DeShields, Jr., and Jorge Bonifacio.

  • If it were up to me, I’d offer Dickey a 3-year / 45-mil extension. Front-loaded if he’d accept, say 17/15/13, otherwise 15/15/15. All years guaranteed. No-trade clause through the 2014 season.

I think he’s worth it, and we’d lose out in any trade we could conceivably get – at least in terms of our chance to contend over the next couple seasons. I just don’t see how you go forward without a stud pitcher like RA. It would be a serious down-grade to our starting pitching. We aren’t rebuilding this offense overnight.

On the other hand, if you’re prepared to throw in the towel for 2013, and possibly 2014 too, then go all out and trade him for prospects.

Wright, on the other hand… He’s been trending down for a while. I’d rather trade him for a middle-tier right-handed starting outfielder making half his salary, and a prospect or two (not likely to get a top prospect for him, but could probably get someone with potential).. Then with the roughly 8 mil freed up, we could either go for some catching help, more outfield help, bulpen help, infield help, long-man / 6th starter… Man we’ve got needs…

BTW, first time posting here. Really enjoy the site.

  • If the Mets were smart they would trade Neise and Keep Dickey. Reasoning is that the Mets major problem is the bullpen so trading the biggest inning eater is stupid especially with Johan and young guys behind him. The Pen will be killed by july and the Mets will lose all close games. Keep Dickey and bring in another innings eater so the two young guys can learn!

  • RA makes sense for the Royals. There’s also a report that they just got turned down by Ryan Dempster for 2 years $26 million. I would think that may get it done for RA, yes?

  • I do not consider myself well versed in the minor league systems of the other MLB teams as to who we might want in return for a pitcher like R.A. Dickey. What I do know is that we have 2 glaring weaknesses as of now and that is at catcher and in the outfield. Kirk N will get a legitimate shot at being our regular center fielder. If there is no one available as a FA in our price range this off season then I would think that Sandy would want a solid RH outfielder who is already established as a major league hitter and a prospect. Now that David is signed I think it will be easier to resign Dickey and I would hope we keep him.

Maybe we could package Duda who is a major liability in the field and “Spin” for a young catcher from a team that has some depth at that position?

Any thoughts by those of you with more knowledge of other teams minor league prospects?
