Melky Cabrera Signs With Blue Jays
Free agent outfielder Melky Cabrera has inked a two year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to Enrique Rojas of ESPNdeportes.com. The deal is reportedly worth $16 million and is currently pending a physical.
Melky was having a career year leading the National League batting .346 for the San Francisco Giants, before coming up positive for elevated levels of testosterone. He was given a 50-game suspension which he served during the second half and into the Giants playoff run. Due to the Giants deep playoff run that resulted in a championship, Melky served all 50 games of his suspension and will be eligible to play on Opening day for Toronto.
The Blue Jays continue their quest to unseat the New York Yankees as American League East Champions.

At least they waited until after my post was up.
lol
Wow, what is pagan going to get? I think it’s obvious, that the mets can’t afford any decent outfielder.
They got to trade someone.
We have signed Brian Bixler today
. On positive side, they have to many OF, maybe they will deal one for a pitcher?
Actually, that idea about trading an OF is intriguing.
LMAO…..It so funny how we (The Mets)have become SCAVENGERS.
I remember when we were one of the teams mentioned in on all Free agents available….now maybe we can acquire a 4th OF that this team doesnt need…lol
This is not a dig at you Metstheory22 just our current situation lol
Yes scavengers is a good way of putting it. We only go for the scraps and tendons still clinging to the bones of the carcass, the parts covered in maggots.
Well Sandy does seem to have that Vulture Hairline thing going on doesn’t he?
Easier to keep the head clean after sticking it into the rotting carcass for Morsels!
Leroy,
And the sad thing is that this clown Alderson has TWO OTHER GMS that are helping him make these god-awful decisions. The shame is these guys spend more time finding useless players that other teams have thrown in the garbage when they should be spending more time putting their heads together and coming up with creative trades.
The fan base on MetsMerized is smarter than this embarrassing group running the Mets now. They don’t even have to think, just read this site because plenty of people have come up with interesting trade ideas, even 3-way trade ideas yet this pitiful front office can’t do that.
I still do not understand why you equate a 3 way trade proposed on here to mean the Mets front office isn’t searching for ways to improve the team.
How do you even know they haven’t called other teams asking about certain players? You don’t. You really need to get over this “we can do a better job thing.”
“TWO OTHER GMS that are helping him make these god-awful decisions”
- I hope you understand that Paul DePodesta’s job is VP Player Development & Amateur Scouting not “of finding trades to make.”
John Ricco is the Asst GM by the way. He’s likely more involved in these decisions than DePodesta is.
Actually DePodesta plays a very pivotal role in this as well as THE man in charge of minors. Sandy does go to him in regards to other teams minor league system. Arent we rebuilding? Doesnt rebuilding entail prospects from other teams. Dont we have scouts under DePo.
We have 4 heads and not one inkling of creativity has come out of this organization.
1.Sandy Alderson
2.John Ricco
3.JP Ricciardi
4.Paul DePodesta
No creativity at all nothing to excite this fanbase for the future. Wheeler as the one acquisition isnt gonna cut it. You dont rebuild a team like this
Isn’t Jim D’Aloia the Director of Professional Scouting for the Mets?
What exactly do you think his role is if you think DePo is the one Sandy goes to with regards to other teams minor league players?
The Director of Amateur scouting works with all amateur scouts and plans for the draft
The Director of Player Development generally oversees their own farm system. Philosophy, gets word from big league club of what they need from somebody in their system IE “we need a bullpen arm can mejia be that guy.”
He doesn’t scout other teams’ farm systems. If you claim he does then what exactly do you think the Dir of Pro Scouting does?
What is the difference who Alderson calls? He’s obviously incapable of making a deal or signing a guy, unless of course, the guy is wanted by no team anywhere.
Believe me I know. We have to see what “finds” we can can get. But at the same time it’s easy to go for the name someone else found and we just throw money at player. Show me something by doing work and “finding” that player no one else will give a try to. Did someone say R.A. Dickey?
“I remember when we were one of the teams mentioned in on all Free agents available”
And that worked out swimmingly.
“….now maybe we can acquire a 4th OF that this team doesnt need”
Or we can work a deal with a team who has an abundance of good OFs.
Yes it did! 3 consecutive years of 88 wins!
I guess you missed them!
I wouldnt touch Melky for that type of money. The Blue Jays are quickly becoming one of those teams that goes for it all at once. It might work for them. The Mets would be crazy to give a guy like Melky a 2 year $16M deal. Nobody knows what he is after he dance with the PEDs.
Taskmaster you seem to not want to touch anyone covered under Obamacare. I know taskmasters are all about free or cheap labor. LOL
No I just wouldnt pay a guy $8M a year who is nothing more than a .250 hitter giving you about 10HRs and 10SB because those are what his numbers are pre-testosterone. Anything he did the last two years is suspect because of the drugs. This is a flyer for the Blue Jays…one that might work out for them. But then again, it might not. Melkys stats tell the entire story. Journeyman player who suddenly found stardom only to get busted for PEDs. You can see it in his stat line.
I’m not one to claim a player doing X means he’ll hit X. But – my issue with Melky is what he did AFTER he got caught. The website stuff he tried to get past the MLB.
I would have taken a flyer on Melky but that much $ is a huge huge gamble, and one I wouldn’t make to be honest.
A lot of GMs are risk takers, Alderson isn’t one of them. Everything must pass his sabermetric litmus test. It has to be very, very, very safe as well as cheap and under valued. It’s all about under valued assets.
You defended ryan braun to no end after he got caught and did even worst, accused a well know doctor of trying to mess up and mix the urine sample taken of his using PED’s. so he tried to actually damage the integrity of a person to make himself look good but according to you that was ok.. It seems to me you only have issues with players who doesn’t fit your agenda right????
Again Alex. What I said about Melky Cabrera please note: I’m not one to claim a player doing X means he’ll hit X.
I’m not sitting here calling him a cheater. I wanted Melky on this team 2-3 years ago.
You and I both have no idea what the results of him or Braun taking whatever really is.
What I said with Braun was I wanted to wait to see how it played out. Braun didn’t falsify a website to beat his case. And frankly, yeah there are tons of questions about Braun but do you think any MLB player is tested more than Ryan Braun right now? You think Bud Selig wouldn’t LOVE to catch Braun?
In case you didn’t realize, Braun hit MORE HR and drove in MORE runs this year than last year.
I’m not saying he’s innocent, I am saying his 2012 campaign leaves MORE doubt about the testing system and the results of taking substances to improve performance.
I’m not mad at Melky for taking PED’s. I think players take what players want to take. I think what he did AFTER was an embarrassment tho
Until this decade, I never seen this fanbase so preoccupied with money, costs, debts and ledger books. They say they hate the Wilpons, but then the sames ones are so devoted to protecting his profits and bottom line. We’ve become an enigma.
You said it,
They know more about contracts, money, and percentages than the game. And it doesn’t bode well for the game of baseball in the future because you have a new breed of obnoxious fan who thinks they get to know everything about baseball with their fun, new statistics but they wouldn’t know a double cut off from a double. They wouldn’t know a hang move from a hang nail.
I dont think this is a real baseball problem, or even a New York problem. I think this obsession with salaries, budgets, advanced statistics are a total Mets fan base thing. I live in Phillies country. None of that exists here. That’s why I mentioned it in the first place, because i think it’s so bizarre how much time is spent belaboring these off the field issues.
The why did the Phillies get rid of Victorino and Pence? It certainly didnt have anything to do with the fact that Pence was going to put them over the luxury tax level for both 2012 and 2013 with his arbitration earnings.
To think those were baseball decisions and not money decisions is fooling yourself. Oh and by the way, the Yankees are now in austerity mode too. Only the ignorant Yankee fans believe Josh Hamilton is going to show up in the Bronx. When was the last time a guy was passed on by the Yankees because he wanted a second year like Tori Hunter?
Task, you are helping Selig to prove his point.
This arqueing about Salaries are pretty stupid and it only helps Wilpons and Alderson to dupe the Fans. We as the fans shouldn’t think about money. we should only think about the ability of the player. This fans acting like owners should stop. It looks so ridiculous like the spongy mens acting like milionairs.
No, Selig’s point was that only Mets fans are concerned with payroll.
I can supply a long list of blogs and fan posts that prove otherwise.
Hell, Cots Baseball Contracts was a labor of love by a fan.
and please don ‘t try and tell us in the Good Old Days That Never Really Happened that player salaries were never discussed by fans.
Raj Davis should come cheap via a trade. His OPS isn’t great, but he does steal and can lead off.
Nobody is coming cheap. I’m sick to death of this “cheap” talk. Other GMs pull off those moves not this one, not Alderson.
How about just go out there and make trades, sign a couple players and start building a God Damned team already!!!! Good young pitching is starting to come up how about starting to compete as best you can NOW for God’s sake.
Sandy does not covet steals and steals is Rajai Davis’s only real asset. If he walks alot they’ll be all over him….OBP

As the rap group “Naughty by Sandy” would say, “YOU DOWN WITH OBP”
Call me crazy for suggesting another LH bat but how about Rasmus?
Nothing lost fellow Mets fans. The New Age Mets cannot afford 16M. They can’t even afford 6M to bring Hairston back. The 3 GM Stooges will play Duda, Capt. Kirk, Baxter on the OF.
there is going to be a lot of money spent this winter. The new tv contract will have some owners going on binges. 16mm for this guy is just stupid. How much did torii hunter get? way too much for a 38 year old outfielder, The other FAs and thier agents are licking thier chops today,
