He has a story that works better nationally than the others. Many sportswriters are frustrated New Writers who lament being limited to only reporting sports. Here they get a chance to talk about something a bit more meaty. The guy who had everything go against him and triumphed!

Where he came from, What he has been through, it really allows them to get a good page of story for the baseball Writers to write about (and they are the ones who vote on it) so I think that gives him an edge.

He led league in saves with 42, strikeouts for relievers with 116, had 1.01 ERA, 0.65 WHIP, 16.9 K/9, 388 ERA+, 8.29 K/BB. Those numbers are off the charts and in my opinion greater and more difficult to achieve than anything Dickey or Kershaw did. Kimbrel had one of the best and most historic seasons for a reliever in the history of the game.
