The Mets picked Young up twice coming off injury. It seems to me that a player attempting to salvage his career is not negotiating from strength. I am suggesting that the Mets have a low cost option for the second year. will a cheap buy out, say 100K. I like Young. Yes our starting pitching looks good, but people get hurt. Sandy may shop Dickey and Niese this winter. I'd like to see Young brought back.

That's a good question. Perhaps Young opted not to have one, or the Mets wanted opportunity to negotiate for 2013, rather than be forced into a certain set price prematurely to retain him knowing his injury history.

But really, barring injury or trade of current projected rotation, the Mets already have their starting five which leaves Young on the outside looking in.

They also want to bring back Pelfrey which they may not be able to do given his agent is Boras. 7 legit, experienced starting pitchers provides good depth from team standpoint, but from player standpoint, the math just doesn't work.

Scott Hairston's has major hole in his game - one of the worst outfield arms in the majors. With Duda projected for left field, the Mets can ill afford Scott's zero arm anywhere in the outfield, especially right field. If not for that arm, and unimpressive range overall, his value and contract status would be far more than he's bound to get right now on the open market.

I believe he will get a multi-year deal based on his power and clutch hitting, with the possibility of being everyday player, It's good bet the Mets would prefer to offer 1-year, and given his defensive liabilities, I don't blame them.

That said, Hairston is an asset beyond what he does or doesn't do on the field, which is also why they value him. He's class act. But do the pros outweigh the cons - that's the broader issue overall the Mets must ponder and likely are.

Are you people blogging from the gas line or what....

I wish these players well, but they were not top of the line players. I like that Sandy gave Young a chance, but why wouldn't he have a team option on a second year? Most of these "value signings" don't work out. If they do the player walks. What is the purpose?

this is weird...who cares about Scott anyway? He had a good year and managed to stay healthy for a change. Lets see him try to pull that one off again. If he goes to another team, sure, he'll do it. If the mets sign him...doubt he'll be the same player.

As far as trading him goes? Scott would never bring back a top prospect or even a pretty good arm. You're looking at a jefry Marte type prospect if you're lucky and id rather have scott in the lineup instead.

Now, if you're beef is about not trading Reyes...then count me in, that was and is still the biggest mistake this team has made since sandy became the general manager. But, at the all star breal back then, if he'd traded him, the fans would have went balistic! I bet the Wilpons told him to hold onto him.

I don't disagree with you Joey. Foolishly I thought after the storm I wouldn't see some of the same behavior, but this post by Maniac toward Kay set me off.

Spend less time calling people on the internet names and trying to flex your internet muscles about scott friggin hairston, and go help somebody instead.

By the way, the greatest thing George Steinbrenner ever did was he never bragged about how much $ he donated to charity. He said that if you brag about how much you donate to charity, then you're donating for the wrong reasons.

"My charitable deductions on my 1040 is probably more than your paycheck."

That says it all.

Just walk away Maniac, you want to start a flame war about a 4th OF being signed a few weeks from now - go ahead.

But maybe lets give it a week or so before we start trashing other users again who may or may not be dealing with more issues than you.

Stop pontificating and cut the Mother Theresa act.

Dont presume to know who was has or hasnt helped people in need. Just to support this site in it's time of need I gave $500 to help, and I've give much more on a regular basis to my church the DAV and AHA. My charitable deductions on my 1040 is probably more than your paycheck.

Now lets talk Mets whenever you're ready. Alderson was a fool for not trading Hairston when teams were hard up for him right?

I never remember every having a conversation with you or anyone about Scott Hairston. Since YOU have so much time on your hands, prove anything I said about him.

If I did say anything, it's called an opposing opinion, not "getting digs"

"Next time keep your nose out of business so you wont get called out when things go as I predicted they would."

My business, are you kidding me with that childish comment? This is a blog, people posts opinions. You need to get over yourself. Again, PROVE that I every even had a conversation with you about this, frankly I don't remember (but remember a conversation I had with you about anything Mets related is not one worth retaining)

"And please have some respect under these terrible circumstances and dont take things to the gutter." ARE YOU FRIGGEN SERIOUS? You are the first to post and call me out of a differing opinion I may or may have not made weeks ago and you think you are owned an apology during a time when talking about the Mets or a discussion I had weeks ago is the last thing on my mind or a priority in life?

My God you can't make this BS up. Here's an idea, instead of fishing for a pretend apology, pound your chest about something the may have been said, go volunteer somewhere, go buy supplies for those that don't have, go to the hospital give blood, just do something.

THIS IS NOT IMPORTANT in the grand scheme of things.

Hi Jessep,

First off, hope you and your loved ones are OK and did not suffer with much property damage.

I do wish to add to your thoughts about attacking others - especially in light of what we just all went through. Those who do attack also leave an intimidating affect on others who in the future wish to voice certain sentiments but become hesitant to because they do not want to be again subjected to the humiliation by others. In this light, they are actually curtailing the freedom of speech and exchange of opinions even on a subject so unimportant in the scheme of things - a baseball team.

I know this has caused me to think twice before saying things about the Citi Field experience because of the put downs.

Let us hope everyone now puts things into proper perspective and just agree to disagree in a friendly manner.

Maniac: Some people have taken the past week or so to gain some humility in life and realize we're here talking baseball and there are more important things to deal with.

Your post provoking Kay only proves that you are not one of those people, further proven by your desperate need for Kay to reply "you were right." Wow, Met Maniac was right about Scott Hairston a 4th OF. Wah-friggin-hoo.

"Next time keep your nose out of business so you wont get called out when things go as I predicted they would"

You want Kay to drop everything and say she was wrong about Hairston's contract? Really? The times when you've been wrong have you run to MMO to say "hey I was wrong." Have a little class next time...

oh and don't bother replying to me with anything else except maybe "haha you're right Jessep."

Youre the one that's classless and can only resort to name calling. You are also the one that singled me out when I made an issue out of not trading Hairston when I said there was no way they could afford to keep him. Next time keep your nose out of business so you wont get called out when things go as I predicted they would. And please have some respect under these terrible circumstances and dont take things to the gutter. A simple "haha you were right Maniac" would have sufficed.

His 2011 stats werent anything to drool over.

Yet the Mets didn't trade Hairston because there wasn't a prospect good enough being offered? It was only because with perhaps a half million dollars left on his contract, Sandy did the math and calculated keeping Hairston would be an inexpensive public relations stunt to make fans believe he was sincere in wanting the team to remain competitive in the second half. It didn't work due to the evidence of tickets literally being given away.
