"the fact that he then went on the record to say that, “We already have a shortstop.” when asked why, really makes one question his judgement. The shortstop he was referring to was non other than the immortal, first ballot hall of famer: (wait for it.) Rey Ordonez."

He really chose Rey Ordonez over A-Roid? ROFL!

I thought the Melvin Mora thing was bad but ALEX RODRIGUEZ???

EZ with the personal insults you fake tough guy! I was wrong in saying you are childish what I meant was your rants and hateful attacks on anyone who disagrees with you are childish. In case you couldn't tell my entire response was dripping with sarcasm. I don't hate the man and I think it is very unfortunate what happened to him and his family. I do think he was a bad GM. Apparently the rest of baseball thought the same since he was never even offered a scout position.

Now as far as your concerned, my address is 29 hickory road Sloatsburg NY. You are free tall call me an "idiot" or "hateful creep" all you want but i ask you to not be such a coward and do it to my face. I disagree with many on this site (Alex68 almost all the time and if I've ever attacked you personally Alex I appologize) Until you personally meet me, be a man and critique what I write or disagree all you want. Keep the personal crap out of it.

And anyway, you said he only made one move which was Leiter. That's what this thread is about. It's about a very, very, VERY inaccurate statement by you. Unless you've kept your head planted firmly in the sand and totally ignored his record until you just did your research than it was also an intentionally deceptive comment by you. And wrong.

That's what's this is about and you were proven wrong. He made a multitude of excellent executive decisions that built those. 1998-2001 Mets teams. And he was GM when Reyes, Wright, & Pagan were signed. Yes he made some bad moves but that's not going to take away his accomplishments as a Mets GM no matter how much you wish it did, it's not.

You just flat out hate his success he had with this team. And he had some of the greatest success any Mets GM has ever had. That's a fact no matter how much you don't like it.

Brought the Mets to back to back post season appearances. Period. Sandwiched between 2 pennant runs. Period.

Why do you hate the man? He's one of the best GMs in club history. The team was successful under his reign. And i DID mention that he made bad moves as well like all GMs. Are you that much of a hateful creep to hate the GM of the team you love that brought it some of it's most shining moments in it's history? Are you that much of a hateful idiot? Yet you praise Alderson?

Don't know what's in the water at Sloatsburg but I'm sure it's nothing the Red Cross can't fix.

Bayonne,

You are so incredibly childish and biased. I love how you ALWAYS only include items that may prove your point. Let's not let the facts get in the way of a good story, right.

First he was dead set against Piazza!!! He went on record saying so. He was forced by ownership to trade for him. The way I remember, it was Nelson Doubleday Jr. Not Wilpon but thats really not worth debating. Either way, this was not his baby. Verdict: (I love how you get to play judge and jury in your own little fantasy. I will do the same.) No credit to Phillips.

Now since you want to go over all the great things Steve Phillips did in his career (because apparently your on a mission to prove that Sandy Alderson is the worst GM in baseball history. I know Al Harazin was better.) I would like to point a few transactions, non transaction, and even comments he made that I guess just slipped by you when you were writing your "Steve Phillips is Great" manifesto. I know they were small and insignificant so I can see why you over looked them.

Alex Rodriguez: He was, perhaps the best player in the game at the time. He went on the record saying he would love to play for the Mets and was even seen at many of the Mets post season games. Now lets put aside the PED issue since that would disqualify nearly everyone. I understand that ARod got an insane, stupid contract, TWICE but the fact that the man was campaigning to become a Met and SP didn't even reach out to him is terrible, but the fact that he then went on the record to say that, "We already have a shortstop." when asked why, really makes one question his judgement. The shortstop he was referring to was non other than the immortal, first ballot hall of famer: (wait for it.) Rey Ordonez. Verdict: Are you kidding me? a Brutal Loss!!!

In 2001 Gary Sheffield wanted out of LA (and he was making life miserable for them). He had only 3 team that he could be traded to, one of them was the Mets. The Dodgers asked for another immortal sure to make the Hall soon Jay Payton. Phillips rejected it. Sheff was then traded to the Braves. Verdict: While it we would have missed those many Jay Payton highlights I think Sheff may have been worth it. Thats a loss too.

He traded the very hated and under performing Mel Rojas for the MORE hated and even MORE UNDERPERFORMING Bobby Bonilla. A terrible move by itself but the fact that Mel had 1 year and $5mill left on his contract and Bobby Bo had two years and $13mil make it INSANE. Verdict: Well the fact that Bonilla is still being paid (no fault of SP's) make this not just a loss but a blowout.

After Mike Hampton walked away (I actually didn't mind that SP didn't chase him on this.) He then signed the good but middle of the rotation at best Kevin Appier for 4 years and $44mil. An astronomical number even by today's numbers. To make matters worse he also signed the human rain delay, Steve Trax. Verdict: a close loss

We had a sweet swinging lefty firstbaseman who was also an excellent fielder named John Olerud. He was a free agant and he even said that he was torn between returning to the Mets or playing in his hometown of Seatle. SP made the choice easy. He offered $6mil. for 3years. The going rate was around $6 to $8mil per year. He signed with Seatle for $7mil per year.

Appier performed relatively well for the Mets the following season and was fairly dependable but we now had a need for a good hitting first basemen (funny how that wasn't the issue the year before when we had Olerud). So SP traded Appier to the Angels for a broken down and very fat Mo Vaugn. Mo was great with Boston but sucked the rest of the time. The fact that he was making $17mil per year (second only to ARod) makes it even worse. Verdict: Fat loss.

I love the fact that you mentioned the Kenny Rogers trade because Rogers was certainly a good pitcher. He actually went 5-0 for the Mets and some feel we wouldn't have made the post season without him so Kudos to you Mr. Bayonne (and SP)!!! But what you failed to mention is that Terrence Long was also a productive player, not as good as Kenny Rogers was as pitcher but productive still. The fact that Kenny WALKED IN THE WINNING RUN that sent the Braves to the WS that year make this trade a lot closer than you are letting on. What really bothers me is that you researched this trade but completely overlooked the Izzy for Billy Taylor trade. Same year, same month same two teams involved yet you overlooked that? Strange! Verdict: LOSS

He traded for Robbie Alomar! Verdict: Loss

He resigned Roger Cedeno! Verdict:Loss

He traded Rick Reed for Matt Lawton! Verdict: Loss!

Bayonne, you really should go out and get a new monitor. Apparently yours only shows the items that prove your point(s) and not the ones that disprove them. Either that or you forgot that you not the only one who access to a computer and the internet. I don't have to wait until the new edition of encyclopdia come out.

Bayonne, My crow was excellent and I thank you for it (I had forgotten some of SP's better moves. I think I tried to balck them out). I hope you enjoy your $h!t sandwich!!!

Actually you are 100% wrong.

You obviously did not do your homework before you wrote your response. Here is just a few of the trades the GM of the Mets team that were the first to make back to back playoff appearances in their history made right off the bat:

First I'll start off with Todd Pratt. Funny how you forgot that right? Imagine signing a guy that was delivery pizza one day and virtually the next - well you know the story. If your boy Alderson did that you would be walking around with a permanent woody.

Here's the first trade he made about 3 weeks after being hired.

- August 8, 1997
Traded Lance Johnson and PTBNL’s Mark Clark and Manny Alexander to the Chicago Cubs for Brian McRae, Mel Rojas, and Turk Wendell
- December 18, 1997
Traded Fletcher Bates and Scott Comer to the Florida Marlins for Dennis Cook
- May 22, 1998
Traded Preston Wilson, Ed Yarnall, and Geoff Goetz to the Florida Marlins for Mike Piazza
.....i know...you're going to grunt "duh, but that was the Wilponz"...duh....

- July 24, 1998
Signed Melvin Mora as a free agent

Here's a "good day" since we've already read that Alderson had a "good day"
- December 1, 1998
Traded Todd Hundley and Arnold Gooch to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Roger Cedeno and Charles Johnson*
*traded Charles Johnson for Armando Benitez.
- December 1, 1998
Signed Robin Ventura as a free agent

Here's another "good day" 15 days later:
- December 16, 1998
Signed Rickey Henderson as a free agent

- March 25, 1999
Signed Orel Hershiser as a free agent
- June 2, 1999
Drafted Angel Pagan in the 4th round and Mike Jacobs in the 38th round of the amateur draft
Verdict: Push
- July 23, 1999
Traded Leo Vasquez and Terrence Long to the Oakland A’s for Kenny Rogers
Verdict: Win

And yet here's another "good day".

- July 31, 1999
Traded Brian McRae, Rigo Beltran, and Thomas Johnson to the Colorado Rockies for Darryl Hamilton and Chuck McElroy
- July 31, 1999
Traded Craig Paquette to the St. Louis Cardinals for Shawon Dunston

- September 14, 1999
Traded Dan Murray to the KC Royals for Glendon Rusch
- December 11, 1999
Signed Todd Zeile as a free agent
- December 23, 1999
Traded Octavio Dotel, Roger Cedeno, and Mundelein High School’s Kyle Kessel to the Houston Astros for Derek Bell and Mike Hampton

Anyway that's just some of the moves. Of course he made some bad ones as well and I'm not even listing some of the minor league moves made under his watch (Nelson Cruz, Reyes, Wright, Heath Bell, etc.)

OH! Did I forget the Al Leiter trade? Silly me

Anyway, have a nice evening in Sloatsburg and I hope you like fowl because you can spend the night pigging out on "crow"

To finish this post I will leave you with your words on one condition - everyone must read it and imagine Homer Simpson's voice..or Barney Rubbles and throw in some "derr's" and "duhs"

What great trades are you talking about? Lieter? That’s a grand total of one. Right from the get go he was a disaster."

Actually you are 100% wrong.

You obviously did not do your homework before you wrote your response. Here is just a few of the trades the GM of the Mets team that were the first to make back to back playoff appearances in their history made right off the bat:

First I’ll start off with Todd Pratt. Funny how you forgot that right? Imagine signing a guy that was delivery pizza one day and virtually the next – well you know the story. If your boy Alderson did that you would be walking around with a permanent woody.

Here’s the first trade he made about 3 weeks after being hired.

…..i know…you’re going to grunt “duh, but that was the Wilponz”…duh….

This is pointless...a pipe dream. Five years ago we all knew that if a player like this was available, the Mets might be able to get him. Now? It's like we root for the Royals. If a player doesn't come from the farm system or the trash, the mets aren't players anymore.

It's sad, but to get this guy, they'd have to give up their best prospects; which, because there's no money, is frightening. We've been brainwashed. This is NY, this should not be happening.

Don't lose sight of what Stanton said. It's the same remarks were heard from R.A., from David and the mood in the clubhouse about "being kicked in the teeth".

“Then to say it’s not about money, what is the motivation? Where is that winning philosophy? How many times do you have to be told something and have it change before you realize what’s going on? It’s like the boy who cried wolf. Maybe that’s the business everywhere. But I would like to think it’s not that way. Baseball is about winning. It is about people. When it’s not about winning and not about human beings, I don’t want to be a part of that.”

“I can deal with losing as long as one is trying to win. If you’re losing and you’re not trying to win, that is not fair."

This is something I am convinced Sandy does not comprehend based on his actions, his statements. his analytical way of thinking and his public persona which shows such indifference to anything he can't see on paper.

That is what Stanton meant about baseball being about winning and about people and when it’s not then it is no longer about human beings.

Any GM who hasn't called and at least checked in on Stanton should be fired... It's an easy call, he's the best power hitter in the sport, worthy of many top prospects.

The Marlins simply don't deserve him. If I was him, I'd keep talking and stirring the pot.

There just is no way it could happen with the Mets. Now, if Omar was still GM...
