Rumors….innuendos….just more fodder for the savage media and fans to “twist” on. Would it not be better to look at the man himself and the way he has behaved since coming to New York!

R.A. Dickey came to NY a journeyman pitcher whose claim to fame was a revoked signing bonus due to a physical deformity in his right arm. From day one he has shown nothing but respect for the game, for the fans and a sense of professionalism that made him a strand up guy to all. He was articulate without an attitude and above all a good teammate. His performance has been terrific and one of the few bright spots especially in 2012. His “story” has been nothing short of a “feel good” one.

I would be willing to bet that Dickey’s supposed comment that he and David Wright were going to be a package deal for the Mets to negotiate was nothing but bulls#it.to stir up the fans. Yes, if the Mets don’t make a good offer to Dickey he will accept the idea of being a free agent. At the same time if Sandy A feels that Dickey’s demands are too high he will see what he can bring back in a trade. Sounds like the only thing preventing Dickey from signing an extension will be foolish behavior by both parties.

You can bet that R.A. Dickey wants to stay in New York and realizes the opportunities that are available to him are better in the “Apple”

Lil Nicky, you’re forgetting that wright, dickey, Santana, and bay are all getting paid now. The payroll is already under 100 million and next yr they get to minus 50 mill from two of those players. Wright will get about 18 mill and Dickey maybe 10. There’s no way they pay Dickey 15 million…NOWAY. That’s only adding 7 million back onto the payroll. So they’ll have about 42 million before arbitration eligable players. The wild card is how much of the fifty million from mlb’s new television deal gets put into the payroll.

Signing both DW and RA is very doable, and will not cause the same problem the Mets had with Bay and Santana. Combined they should eat plus or minus $30 mil per year while Dickey is with the team. That will not hamstring them going forward so long as they can manage to produce from the farm and meep 5-8 players on the 25 man roster that are pre-arb. Dealing RA comes down to 2 issues – what will the market pay for his services in 2013 for $5 mil of pay, and what will RA settle on. If he will take 2 years under #25 mil with a 3rd year team option, he should stay unless they get 2 MLB ready players that are low cost, and one that will bring either RH OF power or CF/leadoff capabilitities. That is probably more than anyone would be will to spend for 1 year of RA. If affordable, they will be a better team with RA over the next 3 years. Pitching, pitching, pitching. Again. look no further than the Giants.

We don’t know Bay’s deferment yet. They won’t be paying him $16mil, but they’ll probably pay him something.

Conservatively Wright $18M plus Dickey $15M would equal $33M not counting whatever their bonuses will be.

Bay $16M and Johan $25M comes to $41M

But Niese, Ike, Murphy and Parnell will be making $20M in 2014 not $10M.

So there is still a little flexibility but not much to fill 19 roster spots.

Dickey could agree to a 2 year $12 million deal and they will still trade him. He’s gone. This was one Minaya find that will net the Mets a boatload if he wins Cy Young. Assuming Alderson doesn’t get smoked like he did with Pagan.

Once the mets are rid of Santana and Bays contracts, even after you factor in raises from Wright and Dickey the Mets will still only have about 40 million in contracts next year. Then after you factor in all the arbitration players its about 60 million. I think they’re going to have plenty to spend and I hope the use the 50 from the MLB television deal as well.

Wright and Dickey both will get raises…but not equaling what comes off the books from those contracts. Santana and Bays contracts equal near fifty mill. Wright and Dickey might add ten million in raises. The Mets are still 40 million ahead after they’re gone. There is no flexibility issues.

Of course h’d take a hometown discount. He love splaying for the Mets. he loves the fans. And he’s grateful that they gave him a chance to have a career.

That said, I too am convinced they will trade him and lock-up Wright. I believe that’s the wrong move. Even if the Mets prove that they can afford to field a payroll that can add improvements around Wright, locking him up long-term is not the best use of those dollars.
