All teams have until November 20th to make their 40-man roster additions ahead of the Rule 5 draft. This is a list of the players in the Mets minor league system who are vulnerable to the draft at the moment (not a projection of who the Mets will leave unprotected). The post gives you an idea of who the Mets might look to protect (Wheeler and some combination of Tovar, Rodriguez, Gorski, and Marte, IMO) and who they might lose if they choose not to protect (Satin and Schwinden look like the likeliest candidates at the moment, though the AFL or early winter ball can put someone on the radar quickly, like Rhiner Cruz last year or Elvin Ramirez the year before). If a Mets minor leaguer isn’t on this list (and is also not on the list of impending minor league free agents), then he’s safe, in that he still has protection from the rule 5 draft from back when he signed (Matt Den Dekker is someone who falls into this category).

Dont worry everybody. The rule v draft isnt til december. The mets will protect wheeler and prob a few others. Plenty of time. Then again with the wilons who knows…….

This is a pretty ridiculous post. The Mets (and every other team) have not yet set their rosters. Several free agents will be coming off, and a few others are likely to be dropped. Some of the players on this list will certainly be added. Once the roster is set, then it would make sense to list the Mets’ Rule 5 eligibles.

The calculation is technically based on a player’s age on the June 5th prior to their signing date. Wheeler turned 19 on May 30, 2009. He signed on August 17, 2009, so you have to look at his age on June 5, 2009, which was just over 19 years. If he’d been born a week later on June 6, 2009, he’d have technically been under 19 on the June 5th preceding his signing date, in which case he’d be Rule 5 eligible following the 2013 season, instead of this one.

FWIW, everyone on this list would be eligible for the Major League phase of the Rule 5 draft. To determine Rule 5 eligibility for the AAA and AA phases of the draft, we’d have to have access to the various minor league reserve lists (which I don’t think are public anywhere). Wheeler’s a lock to be protected. I think it’s likely that Tovar, Rodriguez, Marte, and Gorski will also be protected. But you never know. And there could always be a surprise addition (like Armando Rodriguez was 2 years ago).

Aderlin rod is the only one with a chance to be above average. Wilfredo tovar plays plus plus defense at shortstop, so he could surprise us… Outside of that, there’s not much. I guess Jefry marte has some upside too.

Gotcha, I misunderstood then as the post doesn’t specify which draft they’d be eligible in.

I understand that basically a AAA team can draft players from the AA roster for a fee, correct? Is there a way to protect the players besides putting them on your 40 man?

What do you mean? Mincone, Rodriguez and Harris would be in the Minor League Rule 5 not the Major League Rule 5. I think I might have to do a guest post on the process for the readers here if they would let me. People here are very confused.

Well if anyone is worried about losing these guys then all I can say is so much for all those who say we have players in the Minors no one wants!

If protecting all these good players is a problem then the solution is simple….

TRADE SOME OF THEM for something we need!

I’m sure if someone wants to take them as a Rule5 they would jump at the chance to trade for them and not have to keep them on the 40 Man for an entire season.

Maybe if we stopped the tunnelvision we seem to have in only trading and acquiring top 50 BA talent we might find a dozen or so possible trades that could be made with the Kids we have that we have a hard time finding a place to play and get a player who CAN easily solve a problem the way a Tejada and Davis have! There are many more good solid and potential all star types you can get that aren’t on BA’s top 50 list and could be great MLB players provided they get on the right team that has the ability to play them where they are best played.

I guess the only problem would be if the Mets have more eligible prospects and players held in reserve to replace injured players that they want to retain and only have those 15 extra slots on the 40 man roster. But if they have the 40 slots filled, I believe this also prevents them from participating in the rule five draft.

Don’t forget JetsMets – you only lose them for good if they stay with the big league club that takes them. Harris, Mincone and Rodriguez – would they stay in the bigs for 162?

Wheeler has only played professional baseball for 3 years. 2010, 2011, 2012. The only way this can be true is if they count 2009 when he was actually drafted but did not play.

Selection eligibility

Players are eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft who are not on their major league organization’s 40-man roster and:

– were signed at age 19 or older and have been in the organization for four years; or

– were signed at age 18 or younger and have been in the organization for five years.

You have to countthe year he signed whether he played or not, like Harvey. 2009, 10, 11, 12. Four years.

If Wheeler was 19 when he signed back in 2009 my understanding was the team has 5 years before they have to put him on the 40-man roster. If that is the case I don’t see how Wheeler is Rule 5 eligible.
