HI Alan,

I agree from a baseball perspective, not re-signing Jose Reyes and giving the opportunity to Tejada had and still does have it's validity. However, there were just as many reasons to attempt to re-sign him as well.

The bottom line is that the Mets were not going to re-sign him because they did not have the money to do so - proven because none of the money that could have been offered to Reyes was used to fill other roster spots.

Taking into account the across the board cost cutting, includng draft picks, signing of inexpensive players - the entire Wilpon financial quagmire - Jose would have been gone even if there was no Ruben Tejada. Just like KRod was gone even though we had no other closer. Just like Pagan who was traded in a two for one deal while we had no one to replace him in center other than Torres. Just like we got rid of Beltran with nobody to replace his bat.

IF the Mets made other moves to improve the club but felt Jose was not in the future - then I would agree it was a decision reached in terms of baseball and economic commmitment. But, just like with all the other moves, it was simply another in a long series of decisions - baseball and non-baseball - done to offset the Wilpon's debt payments and retainage of club ownership.

It fits into the pattern.

Once and for all fellas.....stop comparing this year's situation with signing David Wright to that of the Reyes situation last year. For what it is worth, Sandy A decided that Jose was far too much of a risk injury wise to offer a 5 or more year deal at the numbers forecast. With Ruben Tejada waiting in the winds and the belief that he could handle the shortstop position, the team could slash payroll which it had to do. Obviously, no other team offered equal trade value at the trading deadline in 2011. Did Sandy want too much in return that he was willing to gamble that Jose would give the team a discount in order to stay in NY? Does anyone know for sure?

A GM must have a plan and Sandy A's plan was and still is to be pitching rich in the starting rotation. If Zack Wheeler is ready to step up and join Harvey, Niese and a resigned Dickey as the first 4 in the rotation we could be awesome in that department. A healthy Dillon Gee and a stronger Johann Santana will give the starting staff even more depth. Santana will never be the ace for 200 innings but he can still offer the team a lot. He's getting a lot of money still and he will be here for a while longer.

The Wright and Dickey situations will be settled one way or the other before the winter meetings are over. The brass knows what the fans want and knows that they need to be diligent to give them that

As best as I can tell I think the mistake you might be making is your trying to subtract the $5.5M buyout from the $20.5M. That $5.5M is not part of the $25.5M to begin with so you can not subtract it.

It is $25.5M at 1st no matter what and you then subtract the $5M deferred leaving $20.5M. The $5.5M buyout would only be added to the $20.5M if the option is not exercised and he is bought out.

"first…as I said, 5 mil is DEFERRED, so 25 mil is already inaccurate"

Ok so $25.5M is now $20.5M.

"if Santana is traded to team X in July…and is able to pitch x amount of innings….he has 2 choices…

1 – he can terminate the buyout and execute the player option for 26 mil
2 – he can terminate the buyout and become a free-agent"

If he is traded or not the only way he can turn the team option to a player is as listed above. If you know of another one I look forward to you showing where you read it.

"This means Santana in 2013 potentially only gets 15 mil…not guaranteed 25…and certainly not guaranteed 25 from the mets…"

Again where are you getting $15M from? He will get no less than $20.5M in 2013 based on the deferred money and if the option is exercised.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/6773904/milwaukee-brewers-negotiate-francisco-rodriguez-deal-remove-games-finished-clause

actually the brewers restructured his contract so they can use him in any capacity...

"The Brewers, already committed to pay at least $3.5 million in a possible buyout of that option, negotiated with Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras, a larger buyout of $4 million -- in return for a restructuring of the games-finished clause."

The Brewers were going to pay 3.5...but they negotiated with K-Rod to restructure the deal and paid an additional 500K...

either way...the Mets in June of 2011 were on the hook for the buyout...by July 2011, they were no longer on the hook...

You cant guarentee Santana will make 25 mil, much less that the Mets will be responsible for it...

UNLESS of course you were just fudging the numbers so u can justify crying broke in December

Santana is due to make $25.5M in 2013. He also has $5M deferred every year which would reduce what he gets in 2013 to $20.5M. He also has a $5.5M buyout on his 2014 team option that if the team decides to not exercise it the total becomes $26M.
He has a full no trade clause and he can turn the team option to a player by either pitching 215 innings in 2013, winning the Cy Young award or ranking 2nd or 3rd in the Cy Young. If Santana exercises the option he would then be paid $20.5M in 2013 instead but be paid $25M in 2014. This is based on how Cot's contracts breaks it down.

I'm open to the idea that I am reading this wrong or that this information is just not accurate so if you have something that says otherwise I am more than willing to read it.

LMAO Matt Cerrone STILL spreading lies to the children

"He’ll make $25 million next year, after which he’ll be a free agent. He’s now good, not great. But, he doesn’t have to be what he was six years ago. 25 starts and 140 innings, to the tune of 3.50 ERA, would be just fine…"

Johan at the MOST will make 20 mil next year..and if he is traded, and meets certain standards...can turn his club option to a player option...and/or rip it up for a new deal ( which would mean he only made 15 mil next year )

then when mentioning potential met starters....throws in jeremy hefner...chris young...

no mention of Jennry Mejia...aka the best met SP prospect not named Wheeler...

these clowns are so bad at masking it...

The Mets have several options to replace David Wright...Murphy and Flores....not to mention Hairston also can play either 2B or 3B if my memory serves me correct...

The yankees backup plan for Reyes is either Tulo or Reyes...I believe the Marlins structured their contract with the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers or White Sox in mind...

If Bay were hispanic he would have been sent packing with his excess baggage. But then again Fred sai DW was no super star. That is his main guy to get the fannies in his ball park and sell Mets merchandise. Oh I forget Freddie was drunk at that time and had loose lips.

In a year when many were saying Jeter was liy done and not going to get the same offer from anyone else...

No one based on his performance that year was going to offer jeter that much!

The only reason the Yankees did was for the same reason the Mets have made an offer.
Because the PR hit would be worse than paying him the money!

The thing is...the mets dont have to lowball Wright....

Trading Wright can be made to be an extremely intelligent baseball related decision...unfortunately...the decision to sign/re-sign Wright is not based on intelligence but on $$$...and this is why the mets can not explain to the public why they cant sign Wright to a long term contract...

the constant lying to the public has caught up to the wilpons...its about time

not really...it was a 3 year 51 mil contract with a 1 year option...the avg salary is 16 mil...for someone who is that big of a draw...I can EASILY see the RedSox, Tigers ( hometown team ), and a few others bidding for his services...

of course Derek Jeter's value is highest when he is in pinstripes...but if he wanted to leave...the yanks would be screwed...

Derek Jeter was drafted in 1992...the yanks have yet to find another all-star infielder through the draft system...thats almost 20 years they have had to prepare for this time and Derek Jeter still has em by the balls
