I agree from a baseball perspective, not re-signing Jose Reyes and giving the opportunity to Tejada had and still does have it’s validity. However, there were just as many reasons to attempt to re-sign him as well.

The bottom line is that the Mets were not going to re-sign him because they did not have the money to do so – proven because none of the money that could have been offered to Reyes was used to fill other roster spots.

Taking into account the across the board cost cutting, includng draft picks, signing of inexpensive players – the entire Wilpon financial quagmire – Jose would have been gone even if there was no Ruben Tejada. Just like KRod was gone even though we had no other closer. Just like Pagan who was traded in a two for one deal while we had no one to replace him in center other than Torres. Just like we got rid of Beltran with nobody to replace his bat.

IF the Mets made other moves to improve the club but felt Jose was not in the future – then I would agree it was a decision reached in terms of baseball and economic commmitment. But, just like with all the other moves, it was simply another in a long series of decisions – baseball and non-baseball – done to offset the Wilpon’s debt payments and retainage of club ownership.

It fits into the pattern.

A GM must have a plan and Sandy A’s plan was and still is to be pitching rich in the starting rotation. If Zack Wheeler is ready to step up and join Harvey, Niese and a resigned Dickey as the first 4 in the rotation we could be awesome in that department. A healthy Dillon Gee and a stronger Johann Santana will give the starting staff even more depth. Santana will never be the ace for 200 innings but he can still offer the team a lot. He’s getting a lot of money still and he will be here for a while longer.

The Wright and Dickey situations will be settled one way or the other before the winter meetings are over. The brass knows what the fans want and knows that they need to be diligent to give them that

It is $25.5M at 1st no matter what and you then subtract the $5M deferred leaving $20.5M. The $5.5M buyout would only be added to the $20.5M if the option is not exercised and he is bought out.

Ok so $25.5M is now $20.5M.

Again where are you getting $15M from? He will get no less than $20.5M in 2013 based on the deferred money and if the option is exercised.

actually the brewers restructured his contract so they can use him in any capacity…

The Brewers were going to pay 3.5…but they negotiated with K-Rod to restructure the deal and paid an additional 500K…

either way…the Mets in June of 2011 were on the hook for the buyout…by July 2011, they were no longer on the hook…

You cant guarentee Santana will make 25 mil, much less that the Mets will be responsible for it…

Trading Wright can be made to be an extremely intelligent baseball related decision…unfortunately…the decision to sign/re-sign Wright is not based on intelligence but on $$$…and this is why the mets can not explain to the public why they cant sign Wright to a long term contract…
