…when that All-Star is 27 years old…and wants a 6-7 year deal…I agree…

We had a situation like that….his name was Jose Reyes….

David unfortunately has had 4 straight very uneven seasons…and is going to be 31 at the beginning of that contract…giving him a competitive deal = 6-7 years…

o and we have no DH…

and he already said he didn’t want to move to the OF ( in 2011 )

and we already have a good def/off 1B ….who is coincidentally….turning 26….

the time to give a 7 year contract…is when the player is in his mid-20′s…25-28…

not when he’s 31

and please tell me…why on god’s green earth would Dave sign here?

Playing 28 games total in the majors at 3rd base in the last 4 years does not make him a 3rd baseman. Playing 100+ games at the St. Lucie level in 2007 does not help him for the majors in 2013. Those are the facts.

The idea to shift Murph to third in order to play a Rookie at a middle IF position that he CANNOT PLAY…….. made possible by trading away a great ballplayer? So, I get 3-5 HR’s from 3b with and a 2b who can’t field his position—– this is progress?

The entire idea is bad!

David Wright and R.A. Dickey are not going anywhere.

Sometimes, it’s wise to retain a perennial All Star/Face of the Franchise and his side-kick, a Cy Young candidate with light tread-ware.

Before you go on your usual non factual attacks on somebody’s opinion why don’t you try something new like find out a little info.. Murphy is a 3rd baseman. i know its hard to believe Nan what a novel idea, keeping a guy and actually playing him at his position. No wonder he is criticized with no basis.

Sounds perfect – Move a guy to yet another position that he has little to experience it for him to readajust to all over again. Then sign a 37 year old player because that formula has always worked so well in the past.

Then spend the Wright money on a outfielder that has no speed and doesn’t hit for average in a large ball park.

Trade Wright for a power right fielder, move Murphy to third, sign Scutaro for one year, bring up Flores for second when he’s ready.

Keep Dickey for no more than three years. In addition to pitching great he’ll be a good influence on Harvey, Wheeler, Niese.

Cut Bay, bring back Hairston and platoon him with Duda in LF. Sign BJ Upton with the Wright money for CF.

So we officially have two players in their walk years, now what? Sell high. We’ve never won anything with Wright and even when .500 teams can make the playoffs he fizzled after the break and dropped like a rock taking the team with him.

I don’t see any big changes. A big change would have been to trade Wright not give him a 7 year deal. All I hear is Bay, Duda, Kirk in OF, Murph and Tejada in middle and Ike and Wright at corners. Revamping bullpen 3 years in a row is not big changes.

The option will not be exercised if they strike and agreement that goes into effect the next year. Perhaps the Mets are trying to get a deal for 6 years, one year being in lieu of the option year, as opposed to 6 on the end of the option. Just speculation but it does give a bit more flexibility. I think it is safe to say the decision was long made as to whether pick it up or not. There is no due diligence going on.

Seriously, if this is all but certain, why would the Mets not just exercise the options right away. I mean if these guys are so much a part of your future, you exercise the option right away, and then start working on the extensions. I don’t think Wright and Dickey are petty enough to be offended at the front office waiting to do this, but who really knows when it comes to pro athletes.

And I know they have three days to exercise the options, but please, you’ve had all season and the last few years to do your due diligence.

It is possible that it is not a matter of being “scared”, or even incapable of paying the contract. They may honestly feel that the best way to get where they want to be is to trade them for multiple guys. Sometimes teams that can afford a player do that too!
