In my opinion what makes Ike potential trade chip rather than keeper is the excess movement in his mechanics and related attempts to project how that plays out over the longer term and how motivated he is or isn’t to be the best he can, via making adjustments.

Consider that along with Ike’s too many mistakes on D (throwing and decision-making) plus a lack of diversification in the current lineup – lack of speed plus incomplete, inconsistent players prone to slumps – Ike would bring back the most value amongst Duda and Murphy – which would theoretically bring back a starting position player with more tools which would provide better lineup balance and tool-set diversification this team needs.

Despite the fact that TC very curiously told a reporter AFTER K-Rod was traded that K-Rod wanted out of that option.

See a lot of posts around the blogosphere suggesting some pretty radical trades. Sometimes, a minor adjustment goes a long way.

Here’s what works:

Rotation: Dickey, Harvey, Niese, Gee (Santana, Familia, Mejia, Wheeler, Hefner). Johan is not a 5th starter, but is placed with the others because his health status is uncertain. The rotation is strong.

Bullpen: Francisco, Rauch, Parnell, Familia, Mejia, Carson, Edgin, E. Ramirez, Hefner, McHugh. There’s a lot to work with. BTW, Hisnori Takahashi is available and I think we should bring him back b/c of his versatility and experience. We should never have allowed him to depart. While the bullpen is not as strong as the rotation, there are fewer question marks heading into 2013.

Third Base: Wright
Shortstop: Tejada
2nd base: Murphy, Turner, Cedeno
1st base: Davis, Duda, Murphy

Here’s what does not work:

Catcher & entire outfield.

What to do…what to do…:

Moveable assets: Wilmer Flores, Familia, Mejia, Duda, Murphy, E. Ramirez, Edgin or Carson, but not both. Ike Davis isn’t going anywhere unless we can acquire someone such as Justin Upton in a larger trade, as I don’t see Arizona trading him straight-up for Ike.

Examples of players sought: RH hitting OF prospects Gary Brown (Giants) or Jake Marisnick (Toronto) or blue chip catching prospect, Travis d’Arnaud (Toronto), who I don’t see going for less than Wheeler or Harvey – he’s a tall order, but a phenomenal talent. Unlikely I’d deal either pitcher for him, however, as talents such as Harvey and Wheeler are equally rare.

The one thing the front office shouldn’t do is anything stupid. Failing to re-sign Wright & Dickey would fall into that category. Trading Murphy for 2nd rate bullpen help would be a setback, as well.

Given the salary relief forthcoming in 2014, patience is absolutely in order. So, it makes sense to use 2013 to define, develop and refine what we have and then make the larger moves when the front office has greater financial resources to supplement our existing core.

there is a difference between dropping an option and being willing to work out an extension to replace it. He had all the leverage with the mets, since he was getting that money the next year with them, so he was going to want something to give it up.

as soon as he got traded to be a set up man, the option became close to worthless. Totally different situation.

He was never asked to decline it. That’s a fact confirmed by Krod, old agents, new agents and front office. He told Collins he didn’t want the option and old agents to get rid of it cause he wanted to close and didnt want option hindering it. Another known fact. This front office are terrible communicators to players, agents, other teams, and fans. He was not traded because of any prearranged agreement to drop option as you suggest. The Brewers simply asked him and he said no problem.

It was a player option that he definitely would have opted in to after the season as no one would have given him that kind of money. The deal to the Brewers was contingent on him reworking the deal to get rid of it. Had he just done so with the Mets he might not even have been traded.

Don’t trade Ike. Trade Johan–get creative!! Trade R.A. even though i luv the guy becuse his value’s at a peak and if his arm doesn’t soon break down, his body may. i hate saying tht because he’s been such a great Met, but IF we could materially iprove the team for the future, i’d do it. I’d also trade DW and i luv him too. But aging ain’t graceful in baseball or life. And i think we should re-sign Ricciardi…
