Mets Have Not Discussed Years or Dollars with Wright or Dickey
The Mets have not moved past any of the preliminary dialog with both David Wright and R.A. Dickey about potential contract extensions for both, according to Andy Martino of the Daily News.
They have yet to even broach the subject of years and dollars with either player, and any discussions have been casual and preliminary and they have not advanced into anything substantive.
As has been widely reported, both players have team options for 2013. Sandy Alderson said emphatically last month, that those options are locked in and will be exercised and are already considered part of the overall 2013 budget.
“Anything we do with them, will not effect 2013, only 2014 and beyond.”
You can expect both options to be picked up soon after the World Series ends, and we’ll see where this ultimately ends up for both players.
As for the team source that told Mike Puma of the New York Post said it was possible the Mets could have new deals for both Dickey and Wright before the start of the World Series, there’s one thing we now know is not happening.
Last night on Metsmerized Radio, the topic of Sandy Alderson was discussed for most of the show. His tactics and the current culture surrounding the team were strongly debated as was the feeling by fans and players that things have not progressed as well as anyone expected.
I think you’ll enjoy what was said, and you can listen to the show by clocking here or pressing play on our Metsmerized Radio Player located at the bottom of this site. I believe you’ll find this to be one of our most provocative shows yet.

An article by

No worries, they are “…still talking about when to really get talking.”
Oh Sandy. Be still my heart.
Funny I read an article a couple of weeks ago that stated, from an unnamed source, that the Mets opened with an offer of $100M for Wright. So which is it? Was there an offer or have they not talked years and dollars.
I have a feeling NY Sport writers are trying to fill pages during a slow season until the WS is done.
In short, none of them know what is going on.
No your missing some of the keywords in these unnamed sources posts. It’s words like “conceivable” or “could”. In the case of the $100M it was the word “expected” to open negotiations.
It conceivable that the Mets could have a deal with Wright by the WS or it is possible that they never get a deal. It is possible they open with $50M offer for 3 years.
Again, a nothing story. Anything is possible or could happen.
This.
No different than any other off season.
I’m sure there is some truth to some of the tidbits that have been ‘leaked’. I just take it all with a grain of salt until the definite details emerge.
“I just take it all with a grain of salt until the definite details emerge.”
This
Dont blame the NY sports papers. The Mets are intentionally leaking what has been reported. I know that as fact.
Should clarify that I know the $100 million offer and the World Series reports came directly from a KEY person in Mets front office. KEY.
then you should name names.
Usually in cases like that you only receive info like because of promised confidentiality. Happens all the time even in the locker room.
Your posts are benign and polite but your FEROCIOUS defense of your front office always surfaces in the end.
Bayonne, most people dont get that. That’s exactly why I never do actual posts in which I break a story unless the the parties permit me too. Like the Stankiewicz family did. So I would tell people who think like Stick do, to simply ignore anything that comes from sources. Or basically stop reading most newspapers and independent blogs who do who have sources that lead to many of the posts generated in any team’s blogosphere. But I’ll also say this, if you think teams dont use the media and leak news just for that purpose, you really don’t know anything about how this industry works.
I understand how the business works. It was a subtle )I guess too subtle) comment on the way put referenced your source.
but, there is a fine line between a confidential source for a journalist and not wanting to rock the boat and jeopardize insider status.
anyway, a planted “leak” is an “offer” the way negotiations work.
and didn’t wright and dickey go on record that they needed to talk big picture plans (or some such) before even deciding if they wanted to talk #s? So that would have to have happened, and I believe there were reports about that having happened?
You are a walking contradiction, lol. So you only believe sources when they match what you want to believe or what you hope is happening? Stick, you have to be more consistent than that especially when you call people out, lol.
no contradiction. Like others have said, I take all unnamed sources with a grain of salt, since even if they are real, they all have an agenda behind them. And I doubt some of them are as real as the reporter would like to make them seem (not referring to your source or this instance) since you can spin things any way you want.
so my point is that if it was from a legit key source in the FO, then it was put out for a reason, so it was in fact an initial offer (trial balloon?). Not really any different than a player agent using one of their guys to put out what that side considers to be “fair market value”
It came from a Vice President. Satisfied?
I never doubted your claim it was from an important source. Which is consistent with my point that you were just being used for their agenda, to put out the opening offer to the other side.
Stick, Of course you take it with a grain of salt. however, you want sources to be from the Front office, but after 2 years of straight up LIES coming from the front office you’re still one of its bigger supporter.. So what gives? as Joe D said, you’re all over the place.
goodnees, I made the mistake of responding and got put in moderation. Hopefully it was because I had the poor taste to use one of your words, and not the core taking care of their own!
anyway, you are so far off base as to my opinion of Sandy or the FO, even for you, it is just comical at this point.. Understanding reality and the big picture does not make someone a ****** (insert any of your derogatory your lingo).
Unreal,
This type of stuff stirs up old images of Bill Clinton’s famous “depends on the definition of ‘is’” comment. The lengths these people go to protect a front office is beyond belief.
Incredible. My God, you’re supposed to be a fan of the team not it’s front office
Since we won’t be playing winning baseball in 2013, we should all wear t-shirts to remind ourselves that we should be fans of the team, not the front office.
Such b.s. just trade them already
Umm, over my dead body. Is it necessary to trade every single star this team has???? We are already down to table scraps. We absolutely have to sign both of them no matter how difficult it is.
This going to be the offseason from Hell. It already is making me sick and we haven’t even passed October yet. Why people continue to support anything this team does by buying ticket plans and other stuff is baffling. Wilpons have to go. Look at these clowns they hire like Sandy and Omar, it sounds more like Sonny and Cher, only they had talent. We replace one ignoramus with a worse one from the stone age and somehow they want to call this progress? Stop supporting them, they are all frauds and phonies.
I always get a kick out of the FO arguments. I have no idea about the direction or the thinking of Sandy and Co. I seriously doubt that anyone outside the organization does either. However, I do no that the team I love is not playing up to the level of expectations I have. I am all for artificial arguements and speculation but any report of lack of movement is in itself non-news. Meaning that the news is that there is no news. lol
If the Mets sincerely wanted to sign either or both Wright and DIckey wouldn’t they have signed at least one of them by now? They have allocated “X” amount of money to sign each. They know what that amount is. The fact that Wright was not signed before the world Series really makes you wonder just how truthful the Mets are being regarding their desire to resign each.
Hi Joe,
Great edition of MMO Radio last night and the discussion of Sandy Alderson being just looking at things terms of dollars and cents and profit first and then competition second. It was refreshing to hear that I am not alone in my feelings about Sandy even knowing anything about baseball at all and no reference to him being the architect at Oakland.
But hearing talk about the obvious indifference to the fans and the hurt feelings associated with that type of attitude is what struck me most. Remember I got blasted for suggesting they cared less about those in the upper deck than those who have the money to eat in that expensive and exclusive left-field restaurant by noting that they didn’t even build an escalator in the area for those to take all the way to the top (let alone a huge hunk of left field being cut off)? The reason I made that point is because I took that indifference as a slap in the face just as much as the hosts from last night’s program did regarding double talking to the fans as if they were idiots, etc., expecting them to still buy season tickets while not caring if the team wins or loses, etc.
Again, great job by Satish and Mr. Shapiro last night.
This is like a prize fight. The Mets vs R.A and DW are in the pre game hype and both sides are feeling their way around the ring. The gamble. If no deal is done before spring training and R.A tails off to say 15 wins and DW’s numbers are down the big money contracts are probably gone. If I was their agents I would get the very BEST deal I could before spring training.
Let me know when either side actually start talking.
Exactly! After two years of lies and distortion you have to be either deaf and dumb or ignorant to believe anything this front office leaks to the press. Wright and Dickey are probably scratching their heads like Reyes did when one month after the season their phone had yet to ring.
